    The impact of water content on the strength of sedimentary rocks is a critical area of research, particularly in the contexts of disaster prevention and the construction of underground structures. Despite numerous factors being identified as contributors to the strength variations in sedimentary rocks caused by water content, a comprehensive understanding remains elusive. Moreover, only a limited number of cases have been discussed on strength changes in these rocks during water transport processes. In this study, one-dimensional water transport experiments were conducted during the drying process on Neogene tuff samples from Japan. The experiments focused on the unsaturated permeation of the porous media and analyzed the variations in advection and diffusion terms relative to saturation changes at multiple points. During the drying process, water transfer occurred primarily through diffusion, although advection was significant in the early stages to equilibrate the hydraulic head at the center of the specimen. Furthermore, the same tuff samples, with adjusted water content during the drying process, were tested using Brazilian and uniaxial compression methods to examine the variations in strength properties owing to the variations in water content. By comparing these results with the water transport data, we observed that significant alterations in strength occurred after the convergence of the advection term. It was shown for the first time that the decrease in strength of tuff occurs only during the water diffusion phase. These results are expected to be applied to more accurate evaluation of rock mass stability and advanced numerical analysis.

    Evaluation of the deformation behavior due to drying is crucial in underground construction works. Especially, geological repository for High-Level Radioactive Waste (HLW) shall be carefully selected to act as a natural barrier to prevent radioactive nuclide leaks. Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) is one such governing factors when designing or selecting a suitable location for such underground storage compartments or access tunnels. Since nuclide leakage through geological repositories, intact rocks UCS will vary with the drying conditions. Hence, it is vital to evaluate the behavior of UCS subject to the conditions prescribed. A variety of statistical models has been built to govern the interdependency between UCS and water content. However, there are no significant amount of research have been conducted to emphasize the UCS variation with the degree of saturation under the influence of drying condition. Numerically, Richard's equation exact solution in Neuman boundary condition has been derived to exploit the degree of saturation with respect to time and position. Experimentally, obtain the UCS variation with the degree of saturation pertaining to the Neogene Tuff in Utsunomiya city, Japan. A best fit statistical model was generated for experimental data between UCS variation and the degree of saturation. Then, the experimental saturation degree was replaced by Richard's equation exact solution saturation degree values. Surprisingly, produced graphs for experimental data and numerical analysis data for exact solution were perfectly overlapped. Results point out that change of UCS shows similar characteristics, which exponentially decrease, with both experimental saturation values and exact solution saturation values influenced the drying condition. Moreover, it suggests that UCS value can be predicted subject to the time and position in the sedimentary rocks under drying conditions.

  • Experimental study on fluid flow containing microbubbles through porous sandstone and sand grains

    Two laboratory-scale experimental studies were conducted to investigate the sandstone-microbubble interaction. The first study focuses on the migrating process of fluid with microbubbles through the rock pores and fractures. An apparatus has been set up to conduct the hydraulic conductivity test through Berea sandstone sample. The hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted by flowing water and water containing microbubbles through the plate shape sample. The result of the hydraulic conductivity tests showed a difference between water flow and water with microbubbles. The second study focuses on the microscopic observation to investigate the physical behavior of microbubble movement in water flow and the interaction mechanism between Toyoura sand’s grains and the microbubbles. Main component of this experiment is the transparent observation channel made of double acrylic plates. Sand grains were placed between the plates and the fluid was flowed through it. The interaction mechanisms were analyzed based on video recordings and images which need to be confirmed by further experiments.

    Drying-induced deformations of porous materials are ubiquitous phenomena, but coupled behaviors of moisture content inside the material and deformation, which are difficult to express the behavior as a physical model. This is partly because multiple mechanisms governing drying-induced deformation are involved so that each mechanism may become dominant by respective situations. This article introduces various activities or efforts in some research fields, and retrieves common results in laboratory experiments and in field observations, mainly for sedimentary rocks. Through these processes, future works to be considered are elucidated.

    In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the deformation behaviour of Shirahama sandstone in drying process using small cylindrical samples. A series of comprehensive laboratory experiments was performed in different drying conditions under a no applied load. Saturated cylindrical samples were dried in a climatic chamber while deformation and evaporative water loss were being monitored. The results obtained are reported and further used in linear poroelastic relation in order to derive the matric suction evolution. In addition, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used for evaluating their pore structure and explained its role on measured strain and estimated matric suction. The results show that virtually no volume change occurs in the samples until half of the saturated water content is evaporated. It also reveals that the maximum dimensional change capacity is independent of drying condition but evaporation rate and strain occurrences are shown to be affected significantly. In addition, the study of pore structure indicates that substantial strain magnitude and high matric suction occurrence are attributed to water loss from small pores in the clay matrix. Throughout the process, the samples displayed neither a likelihood nor tendency of damage or destruction. However, strain magnitude is observed to be higher for the sample saturated with concentrated sodium sulphate solution. The present study sheds light on essential elements in the studies of dimensional changes of clay bearing sandstone to assist in evaluating ground movement, deterioration, fluid flow and isolation properties of underground facilities.      In order to estimate long-term hydraulic properties of rocks, we carried out the comparison between a permeable fracture and a low-permeable fracture filled by calcite, and evaluated three-dimensional structure of both fractures by means of X-ray computed tomography. As a result, the low-permeable fracture function as permeable fracture because the joint is connected to each other as channel. Furthermore, the permeability of fracture filled by calcite is the potentially same permeability of permeable fracture since the calcite dissolve in the longer term.

    Unsaturated hydraulic property (relation between the water retention curve and hydraulic conductivity function) of soft rock must be properly estimated for analyzing the saturated-unsaturated groundwater flow such as the flow around a tunnel, rock surface and so forth. In this study a practical technique for estimating the unsaturated hydraulic property of soft rock was developed on the basis of the Campbell model and Genetic Algorithm (GA). The major objectives of the present study are the following two; 1) investigation whether or not the Campbell model can be applied to soft rock for approximating the unsaturated hydraulic properties and 2) application of GA technique for estimating two parameters included in the Campbell model. These parameters were estimated through the inverse analysis of the transient change of evaporation rates from a surface of disk shaped specimen of Tertiary sedimentary rock which are sampled from the Rokkasho area, Aomori prefecture. Two transient evaporation experiments under different atmospheric conditions were proposed for the estimation. The Campbell's parameters of 13 soft rock specimens (5 sandstone and 8 tuff breccia specimens) were estimated through those types of experiments. As the results it was clearly found that the transient change of evaporation rates can be well fitted by the Campbell model except for the region of low saturation and this fact implies that the Campbell model can be applied to the soft rock. And also it was found that, the GA is a promising technique for parameters estimation in the inverse solution method. It can be concluded that the techniques are practically for estimating the unsaturated hydraulic properties of soft rock.

  • Practical determination of mechanical design parameters of intact rock considering scale effect

    As a rule, the change in mechanical properties of rock by specimen size is regarded as scale effect. A rock mass basically consists of two components: intact rock and discontinuities, each of which has different scale effects. In order to numerically analyze the behavior of discontinuous rock masses, sufficient mechanical properties must be determined not only for discontinuities but also for intact rock taking into consideration the different scale effects. This paper reviews the scale effect on strength and deformation characteristics of intact rock, and also discusses the possibility of using standard specimens to estimate strength and deformation characteristics of actual-scale rock. Finally, we propose an adequate method for the practical determination of mechanical design parameters based on the above discussions. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    We call the construction method which stabilizes unstable rocks by binding the joints together with special mortar, Rock Mass Integration Method (RMIM). In order to examine the reinforcement effect, large scale shear tests were conducted on Tage Tuff and Inada Granite block samples containing a single through-going joint at varying normal stresses, which is filled with and without SBR polymer cement mortar. The overall dimensions of the blocks were 80 x 40 x 20cm. Moreover, joint surface roughness measurements, uniaxial compression tests, Brazilian tests, direct tensile tests and P and S wave measurements were conducted. Test results shows that shear strength of rock joints filled with the mortar increases significantly, and the effect increases with increase in rock strength. 2D-DDA analysis also shows that RMIM is an effective and useful method for minimizing or preventing slope failure in Rock Slope Stability.

    Four saturated Miocene soft rocks of Japan i.e. Ohya tuff, Yokohama siltstone, Kobe mudstone and sandstone were tested under consolidated-undrained, cyclic loading conditions. The deformation behavior, pore pressure changes and strength mobilization, and contraction/dilation characteristics of these rocks were studied with emphasis on the non-linearity, stress-and strain-dependence of their mechanical properties. A procedure was introduced to locate the yield point, to estimate Young's modulus and to study the deformation behavior of these soft rocks. Deformation modulus was found to depend on plastic straining according to an exponential equation, whose coefficients in turn, depend on confining pressure. In addition, it also depends on the deviatoric stress levels causing hysteresis to occur. Patterns of pore pressure changes and associated failure modes were interpreted in terms of the initiation/propagation of micro- and macro-cracks inside the specimens. Characteristic stress levels were found based on which the "true" rock strength components - cohesion and internal friction angle were determined and their mobilization with respect to stress and strain levels was analyzed using a new interpretation method. Volume change tendencies were inferred from pore pressure changes whose rate was related to the contraction/dilation behavior of soft rocks. On that basis the dilation angle was estimated and its variation and stress- and strain-dependence was analyzed. A simple equation was introduced to characterize the variation of both internal friction and dilation angles with plastic straining, whereas their stress-dependence was studied through the variation of fit coefficients with confining pressure.     Changes in the pore pressure during CU (Consolidated-Undrained) cyclic loading triaxial tests on fully saturated specimens of four Miocene soft rocks, i.e. Ohya tuff, Yokohama siltstone, Kobe mudstone and sandstone ave analysed. As a result, three modes of failure, i.e. brittle, brittle-ductile and ductile can be recognized, and other characteristic stress levels e.g. crack initiation stress, plastic flow/gliding stress, dilation stress, etc. identified. The mobilization of the strength of these rocks in terms of cohesion and internal friction angle is then discussed. A procedure for the estimation of the rock cohesion strength is first introduced on the basis of the modified Griffith's failure criterion. The determination of the mobilized friction angle at any state of stress during the tests follows. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

    The deformation behaviour of four Miocene soft rocks, namely Ohya tuff, Yokohama siltstone, Kobe mudstone and sandstone is analyzed on the basis of the results of cyclic CU triaxial tests. A procedure for strain correction, Young's modulus estimation and yield location is introduced. Relative to the ultimate failure stress, soft rocks tend to yield sooner, while their maximum deformation moduli increase, though non-linearly, at higher confining pressures. Both axial strain and axial plastic strain, attained at failure and at the onset of residual state also tend to increase with confining pressure. Once the rocks yield, deformation moduli decrease exponentially with respect to the axial plastic strain, depending on their maximum, elastic magnitude and confining pressures and a fitted equation is proposed.     A new type of shear-flow-visualization coupling test apparatus was developed to investigate the hydraulic conductivity alteration and fracturing process of intact soft sedimentary rock (pumice tuff) during shear deformation. The design of new apparatus allows both direct shear test and hydraulic conductivity test to be carried out at the same time. In addition, it is possible to observe the specimen surface during experiment. Shear/normal stress, volumetric flow rate and deformation (shear/normal displacements) can be obtained directly. Area of visible fractures and local normal displacement of fractured specimen were obtained by the image processing technique. With these obtained values, especially, the area of visible fractures and the local normal displacement of fracture revealed the advantage of new apparatus for the shear-flow coupling. This study shows one of new directions on the shear-flow coupling experiment of rock.

  • A new method for strain measurement of rock with conductive rubber

    In this study, a new strain measurement using conductive rubber is proposed. Initially, the influence of temperature change, heat generation, deformation rate, and deformation history against the resistance variation of the conductive rubber were examined. The results showed that the resistance variation of conductive rubber is strongly influenced by the deformation history. Furthermore, the applicability and validity of the strain measurement with the conductive rubber was checked with soft sedimentary rock samples. The experimental work indicated that the relation between the resistance and strain of the conductive rubber is linear. And, this linear relationship covers well from loading point to beyond the failure point of the soft rocks. Therefore, this strain measurement method by conductive rubber is suitable for strain measurement of soft rock samples in the laboratory. In addition, this method has strong possibility to measure the strain of soft materials, such as soil, clay, etc., because of the low elasticity of the conductive rubber.

    Rock fractures as a pathway of groundwater have been altered either physically or chemically, and filled with minerals or other fillings depending on circumstances. In this paper, we describe mineralogical and chemical properties of fractures observed in Yakushima granite, along which the wall rocks are solidified. Microscopic observations and EPMA analyses of the solidified part show that cracks are filled with fragments of different kinds in matrix of amorphous calcium carbonate. It is presumed that the calcium carbonate was provided from corals uplifted. This is supported by the results of the radioactive dating that the ages of fillings are always younger than those of the coral.

    1) A theoretical as well as a numerical study has been carried out with special emphasis on developing a basic under-standing of how crack geometry influences hydraulic phenomena such as permeability and hydrodynamic dispersion in cracked bodies. The permeability tenser kappa_ is formulated in terms of length. aperture and orientation of cracks plus one more non-dimensional scalar lambda depending on conneetivity among cracks. By extending the Robinson's formula, a general expression for lambda is given as a function of density and anisotropy of existing cracks. Dispersion tenser D_ consists of two different sources. The first comes from the fact that each tracer is forced to move along cracks the directions of which deviate from the mean path. The second comes from non-uniform distribution of hydraulic head throughout a cracked body. The second source has increasing importance not only when crack density is low, but also when crack arrangement is highly anisotropic. The distribution of head becomes extremely non-uniform, especially when overall hydraulic head gradient is parallel to the preferred orientation of cracks.
    2) Rock structure can be qualitatively, as well as generally. described by using tensors. In order to show how such a tensor is useful for the description purpose of rock structure, a crack tensor is introduced as an index measure for the rock structure by joints and faults, and is discussed in detail to clarify the geometrical meaning. Four cylindrical specimens of granite, which are immersed in hot water of 90 for 0,180,1030 and 2000 days respectively, are examined to see if the crack tensors can be actually determined by purely microscopic observation. Using thus determined crack tensors for the granite specimens. permeability tensors are estimated in good agreement with experimentally determined permeability values.

    It is commonly accepted that fluid flow in granitic rocks mainly occurs through discontinuities such as joints, fractures and cracks. However all of discontinuities are not always the conduits. How do the fluid flow path form? The investigations of fracture system in Stripa mine, Aspo Hard Rock Laboratory and Kamaishi Mine suggest that fluid flow path mainly relates to the displacement along the fractures and in situ stress regime.
    The effect of shear deformation on hydraulic properties of Miocene sandstone, Shirahama Ss, was investigated in drained triaxial compression experiments. Flow pump method developed by Olsen et al. (1985) is adopted in order to measure the hydraulic conductivity. The water to permeate was run out to two directions, that is the loading direction and the vertical to loading. These tests show that hydraulic conductivities at the peak stress for both tests increase about three times as large as the initial ones. The difference of hydraulic properties due to flow direction is now in consideration.
    In order to examine the deformational and hydraulic properties of rock with fracture system, we developed the triaxial testing machine, in which the surface microstructure of specimen can be observed in a motion using a stereoscopic microscope. In this present study we first showed some experimental results in uniaxial compression test. The shearing process on fractures experimentally generated is simultaneously observed by stereoscopic microscope. The rotation and cutting of bridge, sliding on fracture plane and opening of fracture occur. Furthermore it is clear that these structures are continued inside the specimen by thin section observation. Next, permeability tests under triaxial compression were conducted for fractured Shirahama sandstone. The tests show that the slide along fractures mainly occur after the peak stress and hydraulic conductivity abruptly increase.

    A freezing and thawing test has been conducted in a laboratory using a rectangular specimen with a freezing pipe perpendicular to the rock surface. The aim of the test is an investigation into the conduction of heat in a rock with the goal of understanding the deformation through temperature change. The temperature distributions around the freezing pipe were simulated numerically using homogenous anisotropic continuum assumptions. The numerical procedures by finite element method is composed of coupled heat-stress-fluid flow constitutive equations. This model was compared with the observation results, yielding the following conclusions.
    1)The deformation of the rock around the freezing pipe is mainly due to two processes, the thermal expansion of water and contraction of rock materials ;
    2)the thawing conditions have a clear effect on the patterns of strain distributions ; and
    3)the rock behaves as a homogeneous continuum with respect to heat flow.

    The foundations of many important structures such as nuclear power plants are often composed of soft sedimentary rocks and subjected to cyclic loading caused by earthquakes and so on. Consequently the capacity of these foundations is required for the stabibility of those rocks under not only static but also cyclic loading.
    The purpose of this research is to investigate the relation between static and dynamic strength, mechanism of failure under cyclic loading and viscoelastic properties of soft sedimentary rocks. First, the triaxial compression experiments and stepwise cyclic loading experiments were performed under consolidated and undrained conditions. Comparing the results of two kinds of experiments, we obtained that the ratio of dynamic strength to static strength in total stress expression is from 1.0 to 1.5 but 1.0 in effective stress expression. This means that it is only different in the behavior of pore water pressure.
    Cyclic fatigue experiments were performed to investigate the behavior of pore pressure by every stress cycle. As a result, it is found that the behavior of pore pressure is systematically changed and that this change is described by two quantities, that is, the difference between maximum and minimum values in pore pressure caused by a stress cycle and a lag of phase difference on pore pressure cycles for stress cycles. It is thought that failure of rocks results from the brittle process involving the cumulative growth of internal cracks. We interpret that this behavior results from crack initiation and propagation. In fact, internal cracks, with orientations parallel to a maximum compression and ultimate fracture plane, were microscopically observed from rock specimens after failure.
    In addition, stress relaxation experiments showed that the peaks of relaxation spectra dispersedly distributed, dependent on temperature. These results are very meaningful to establish the constitutive equations involving the effect of crack growth.
