The effects of soil nonlinearity on the dynamic behavior of fixed-head floating inclined pile groups are investigated experimentally in the form of horizontal impedance functions (IFs) and internal forces in piles. A 2x2 model of inclined pile groups embedded in dry cohesionless soil and subjected to a broad range of lateral harmonic loadings at the pile-cap level are examined. Piles with a spacing-to-the-diameter ratio (s/d) of 5 with practical pile inclinations of 0, 5, and 10 degrees along the direction of loading are reported. Results show a profound impact of local nonlinearity and resonance of soil on the horizontal impedance functions. The inclined pile groups show higher values of horizontal IFs than the vertical pile group, in accordance with the general understanding. Influence of pile inclinations on the horizontal IFs is further examined through the variation of soil reactions along the depth of the piles. Semiempirical expressions for estimating the soil reactions, as a function of pile inclinations, are proposed. As for the internal forces in piles, bending strains for the inclined piles are smaller than the vertical pile; the axial strains show an opposite behavior. This study focuses on how to determine an optimal radius minimizing the bending strains of vertical, cylindrical fixed-head piles embedded in a homogeneous elastic stratum in soil-pile-structure systems where the kinematic interaction dominates. In order to determine the appropriate radius, closed form formulae for the bending strains at the head of the piles are derived based on three-dimensional wave propagation theory. A general expression of the closed form formulae can be obtained by normalizing the bending strains with respect to a mean shear strain of the soil medium. The normalized bending strains can be expressed by the radius to height ratio of the piles, the ratio of soil to pile stiffness, and a factor representing the relative amplitude and the phase lag between the loading at the head of the piles and the deformation of the ground. The results of parametric analyses reveal the presence of an optimal radius that locally minimizes the bending strains of the piles. Criteria for determining the optimal radius of soil-pile-structure systems are presented. Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering © ASCE.

It is known that the bending strain of pile foundations is generated not only by the inertial interaction due to superstructure, but also by the kinematic interaction due to large deformation of soft soil layers. Therefore, it is highly necessary to investigate the characteristic of pile bending due to kinematic and inertial interactions. The present study focuses on the appropriate diameter that minimizes the bending strain at the top of the piles when subjected to these interactions simultaneously. In this research, the relation between the diameter of pile and its bending strain is evaluated based on theoretical approaches. As a result, the appearance of the adequate diameter that minimizes the pile bending strain and its conditions are found and their characteristics are investigated.

This paper presents a detailed investigation of the influence on the rocking impedance of flexible sidewalls in embedded foundations. The study focuses on vertical and cylindrical foundations embedded in a homogeneous elastic stratum. In order to anticipate the effects of the flexibility, closed-form formulae for rocking impedance are derived based on three-dimensional wave propagation theory and superposition of both the rocking and flexural movements on a single model by assuming complete bonding conditions between the soil and foundations. A function representing the effect of the flexibility is identified from the closed-form formulae, in terms of the height to radius ratio of the foundations and the ratio of the stiffnesses of the ground and foundations. The rocking impedance for a flexible sidewall differs from those evaluated under the assumption of a rigid sidewall. The applicable range of rocking impedance evaluated under the assumption of a rigid sidewall is assessed, and contours to assist in the estimation of the dynamic response of deeply embedded foundations are presented.

The present study focuses on input loss of deeply embedded foundations that support bridges and viaducts. It is predicted that slippage and separation occur at the interface between soil and the sidewall of the foundations when subjected to strong motions. Therefore, it is desirable to know the effect of slippage and separation on the input loss. This study investigates the above effect by means of analytical approach based on a three-dimensional wave propagation theory, including the influence of inertial interaction due to the mass of foundation and superstructure upon the interface. The present study gives physical understanding of the effect of slippage and separation on the input loss.

It is difficult and is not efficient to detect damage to the underground structures by conventional damage detection method used for the usual maintenance of railway structures on the ground such as girder and pier. In this study, a new method using intelligent material was established to make it possible to detect damage to foundation with simplicity and cost effectivity Further, vertical loading tests against concrete specimen in which three different types of intelligent material were installed were carried out The experiments revealed that all intelligent materials employed in this study can certainly detect damage to the specimen.

The present study focuses on the input loss of deeply embedded foundations that support bridges and viaducts. It is widely known that the strain dependency of soil dominates in surface layers supporting the foundations when subjected to strong motions. Therefore, it is desirable to know how the input loss is affected by the strain dependency accompanied by changes in stiffness and damping of soil. This study investigates the influence of strain dependency on the input loss by means of vibration tests and a theoretical approach of a closed form solution of input loss with a constitutive model for the nonlinearity of soil. The present study gives physical understanding for the relation of the strain dependency and the input loss.

In recent years, there have been reported that several cases in which foundations were severely damaged during earthquake events. An increase in the amplitude of loading transmitting to soil-foundation systems is attributed to inelastic behavior of the system, thus leading to intricate combination of failure mechanisms and wave propagations. This research conducted experimental and numerical studies of single piles and pile groups for prevailing the relation between yielding procedures and frequency-dependent characteristics in the systems. This study proposed a new phenomenological model that can consider both the intensity and frequency dependencies of the systems. The model was verified by comparing the impedance functions and their convergence trends with the amplitude of loadings obtained from the experiments. This study finally proposed the applicability of the proposed model based on the yielding level.

This study deals with the mechanism of soil-pile-superstructure interaction subjected to strong ground motions by conducting shaking table tests and analytical approaches. In this study, shaking table tests were conducted first for evaluating the total response of structural systems. Then, an analytical model consisting of one-degree-of-freedom system supported by a sway model was developed. To clarify the mechanism of discrepancies between the test results and analytical results, specific table tests were performed. In the tests, base input and pile-head loading were simultaneously applied to the experimental models. The test results indicate that a new mechanism of soil-pile interaction is generated when nonlinearity in soils and interface nonlinearity occurs: kinematic interaction and inertial interaction are interrelated with each other due to inseparable nonlinear behavior in the system.

The deformation of an overburden subjected to an oblique slip movement was examined . The result showed the possibility of a right step pattern if normal fault displacement with a slight right lateral strike slip fault component was applied to the overburden. When overburden was subjected to a strike slip movement with a slight reverse fault component, large shear deformation and en echelon zones were observed mainly on the footwall side of the overburden in a narrower zone. The analytically obtained width of the high strain zone was comparable to the observed width at the Nojima fault.
Response of buried pipeline owing to fault movement was examined by numerical simulation. The results showed relation between force acting on the pipe and pipe-soil relative displacement. Effectiveness of flexible joints on pipe has been examined. The reduction in strains of the pipes is seen more efficient when the flexible joint is placed near the fault activation plane.

This study dealt with impedance functions (IFs) of pile groups subjected to strong vibrations due to earthquakes. IFs are defined as dynamic stiffness and damping representing dynamic characteristics at the interface between superstructure and soil-foundation systems. In general, impedance functions have been evaluated under linear-elastic conditions of soils. However, in accordance with the recent earthquake events, strong ground motions and resultant high amplitude of structural response may generate strong nonlinearity in soils near the piles. Therefore, this study conducted model tests on fixed-head floating piles embedded in cohesionless soil carried out under 1-g conditions, to investigate the effects of local soil nonlinearity on the impedance characteristics of pile groups. Results obtained from such tests indicate that soil nonlinearity markedly change impedance characteristics.

To integrate seismic resistance of adobe structure, the combination of external reinforcement by the fiber net and fiber reinforced mud plaster was studied. The aim of tow method is both to increase the strength of structure and to decrease the initial cracking of mud plaster. Static bending test of adobe column and drawing test of strings from mud plaster were done to build the relational expression for earthquake performance of reinforced adobe structure. As a result, the required amount of strings can be determined for many materials. The fixing ability of fiber reinforced mud plaster is not enough to resist at the yielding failure state of adobe structure. To integrate the fixing, wire binding through wall or column is good enough.

In this study, evaluation of degree of damage in GRSW is discussed. Shear strain of backfill material in the reinforced area is evaluated from the horizontal displacement of the wall. Then, occurrence of the slip line is decided based on the simple plastic theory. Since the past studies show that seismic stability of the GRSW depends upon the pullout resistance between geogrid and backfill material after the generation of slip line in the backfill, seismic stability of the GRSW having slip line in the reinforced area is evaluated from the results of the pullout test. Finally, the validity of the proposed method was verified with results of some centrifuge shaking table tests.

The following research results were obtained. 1. Stress change history of the 2000 Tottori-ken Seibu earthquake was estimated directly from the observed strong motion records. It was hind that the large stress drop occurred in the upper central part and lower part of the fault and that the stress dropped monotonically within 1-1.5 s. 2. Development of shear bands in the subsurface layer due to strike slip fault was examined using DEM analysis. In the sediment model of distinct elements, concave-upward shear zones which developed from the basement fault on bath sides of the fault were observed first and were followed by a helicoidally shaped shear. The helicoidally shaped shear (Riedel shear) propagated through the sediment model and broke the surface. With increasing basement displacement, shear zone striking at lower angle to the basement fault developed at surface. The geometry and sequence of these shears agreed with those observed in sandbox tests. It was hind that the development of ship shape structures (shear zones which developed from the basement fault on both sides of the fault) and Riedel shears was attributable to the stress due to dilatancy and the shear in the vertical plane along with the lateral shear. 3. Model tests of strike slip fault showed that the location and amount of slip farmed in model sediments due to basement fault changed by replacing part of the model sediment with ground material which had different properties. 4. 3-D finite element analyses were carried out to investigate the seismic response of piles. Nonlinear material properties and interaction were incorporated. It was shown that the numerical analysis simulated fairly well the actual behavior of pile-soil system with proper consideration of nonlinear material property and that the dynamic and static analyses gave different ground strain.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of the conditions of the ground surface on the earthquake ground motions. Irregular shaped ground, lots of trees and buildings, Which are existing ordinally at the ground surface, were considered in this study. Even if it has been pointed out previously that the ground with an irregular surface may cause complicated seismic responses, the process of generating this complex response has not yet been clarified. In this study, such a process was also examined.
Regarding the effects of the irregular ground surface, for example, it has been pointed out that the ground with an irregular surface causes complicated seismic responses. However, the process of generating this complex response is not yet clarified. In this study, boundary element-perturbation method has been developed to investigate scattering of seismic waves due to an irregular surface. This method is based on the boundary element method in frequency domain and perturbation technique employing the Neumann series. By using this method, the ground response can be separated into those induced by incident waves and scattered waves. Numerical results showed that the amplitudes of the scattered waves are affected by both distance and direction of the irregular surface to the observation points.

Recent earthquakes have stressed the importance of conducting response analysis of a whole structural system including structure, foundation and ground for the performance based design of a structure. For the development of a realistic analytical method, however, it is first imperative to clarify the behavior of pile and soil during earthquakes. The main objectives of this research are to study the seismic behavior of concrete pile and soil using full-scaled lateral loading test and to establish an analysis procedure based on the experiment. Full-scale lateral loading tests were carried out on concrete piles embedded into cohesive soil. Two of the piles were embedded into the ground using inside drilling technique, whereas other two piles were embedded using outside drilling technique with bentonite-cement paste around the pile and soil. The results of the experiments revealed that the lateral load carrying capacity of piles significantly degrades when subjected to cyclic loading compared to the monotonic loading. Three-dimensional non-linear finite element analysis was then carried out to study the behavior of experimental specimens analytically. The analysis implied that interface element should be used between pile and soil surface to simulate the gap formation between the soil and pile. Moreover, the analysis also showed that if the degradation in soil stiffness due to cyclic loading is ignored, the analysis highly overestimates the lateral loading capacity of the pile. It was also found that for the outside-boring pile, bentonite-cement layer has to be considered in the analysis to obtain the actual lateral behavior of pile.

It is well known that the most fundamental and important problem in the seismic engineering is estimation of the surface ground motion caused by earthquake. Usually, to evaluate the surface ground motion and wave propagation in the surface layer, the ground is modeled as the very simple flay layer system, while the real surface ground is quite irregularly shaped. And the programs, like as SHAKE, based on the wave propagation in simple layer system are applied. In those cases, the ground is assumed as flat and there is nothing on the surface. There are many local and micro geographical features on the ground surface. On the ground, there may be many trees, forests, houses and buildings. There is a possibility that wave propagation is affected these features, In this study, the effects of these omitted phenomena on the wave propagations are evaluated.
Seismic responses of a ground with various types of sinusoidal shaped irregularity were evaluated by using the boundary element method and analyzed based on "scattered-wave contribution". The examination of the numerical results revealed the following : 1)the response at the trough varies sharply with frequency whereas the response at the peak shows large amplification over a wide frequency range ; 2)the predominant frequencies at the trough depend on the amplitude of the surface irregularity and do not depend on the number of fluctuations of the ground ; and 3)these characteristics can be understood as the results of the interference of scattered waves coming from the irregular surface.
Peak ground acceleration(PGA) as a measure of earthquake motion intensity is an important factor in the earthquake-resistant design and reliability analysis of structures. The purpose of this article is to examine the spatial variability of PGAS (recorded at the same epicentral distance) as a function of separation distance. To do this, we define PGA ratios as spatial intraevent variations of PGAS and examine their statistical characteristics. We analyze the probability distribution of the ratios and formulate equations for their probability density functions, mean values, standard deviations, and percentiles. These statistics are then estimated using accelerometer arrays of the Chiba, SMART-1, and SIGNAL databases. Then, the relationship between these statistics and the station separation distances is analyzed. We found that the means and standard deviations have an almost linear relationship with the logarithm of the station separation distances ranging from several meters to 100 km. Finally, based on the fiftieth and ninety-fifth percentiles, the differences between PGAS at two different sites due to future earthquakes are discussed.
