We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 honeycomb-lattice
antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg model with three exchange interactions,
    $J_{\rm A}$, $J_{\rm B}$, and $J_{\rm C}$ that is realized in a distorted
    honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet ${\rm Cu_2 (pymca)_3 (ClO_4)}$. We remeasured
the magnetic susceptibility of its polycrystalline sample with special care,
and determined the exchange parameters of this material through the comparison
with numerical results based on a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The QMC
method also provides a ground-state phase diagram in the $J_{\rm A}/J_{\rm
    C}$-$J_{\rm B}/J_{\rm C}$ plane. The phase diagram consists of a small N${\rm
\acute{e } }$el phase and a gapped quantum paramagnetic phase surrounding the
N${\rm \acute{e } }$el phase. The latter includes six regimes of
hexagonal-singlet-type states and dimer-singlet-type states alternatingly
without boundaries closing the spin gap. We further calculate the equal-time
spin structure factor in each phase using the QMC method. The computed spin
dynamics by the exact diagonalization method exhibits continuums near and in
the AF phase. Characteristic four energy band structures in the state with
strong hexagonal-singlet-type correlations are informative to clarify the
    ground-state of ${\rm Cu_2 (pymca)_3 (ClO_4)}$ by future neutron scattering
    measurements.

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. Nonradiative recombination (NRR) centers in GaAs:N δ-doped superlattice (SL) structure grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) are studied by two-wavelength-excited photoluminescence (PL) method. The PL intensity quenching due to the superposition of below-gap excitation (BGE) light at energies of 0.75, 0.80, 0.92, and 0.95 eV and an above-gap excitation (AGE) light either for the GaAs conduction band (1.69 eV) or E− band excitation (1.45 eV), respectively indicates the existence of NRR centers inside the GaAs:N δ-doped SL and GaAs layers. The AGE density and BGE density dependence of the PL intensity have been studied for both excitation schemes. Recombination model based on two levels has been proposed to interpret the experimental results and energy distribution of NRR centers inside the GaAs:N δ-doped SLs and GaAs layers. The defect-related parameters are estimated systematically by solving the rate equations and fitting the results with the experimental data that give a phenomenological insight into the sample.

© 2018 Author(s). We use two-wavelength-excited photoluminescence (PL) to investigate nonradiative recombination (NRR) centers in GaAs:N δ-doped superlattice (SL) structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The change in photoluminescence (PL) intensity due to the superposition of below-gap excitation at energies of 0.75, 0.80, 0.92, and 0.95 eV and above-gap excitation at energies of 1.69 or 1.45 eV into the GaAs conduction band and the E- band implies the presence of NRR centers inside the GaAs:N δ-doped SL and/or GaAs layers. The change in PL intensity as a function of the photon number density of below-gap excitation is examined for both bands, which enables us to determine the distribution of NRR centers inside the GaAs:N δ-doped SL and GaAs layers. We propose recombination models to explain the experimental results. Defect-related parameters that give a qualitative insight into the samples are investigated systematically by fitting the rate equations to the experimental data.

alpha-Co hydroxide nanosheets have been synthesized and their magnetic properties were investigated. By using a soft chemical exfoliation technique, exfoliated alpha-Co hydroxide nanosheets, typically with lateral dimensions of few 100 nm, were obtained in a colloidal suspension. The magnetic responses of a sample consisting of a colloidal suspension of the nanosheets indicates a ferromagnetic phase transition occurs at Tc=37.8 K. The magnetization possesses a linear temperature dependence at low temperatures below Tc. In addition to this observation, the magnetization is proportional to (1-T/Tc)(beta) with beta=0.8 +/- 0.1 near Tc, which imply that the surface magnetism dominates in the exfoliated alpha-Co hydroxide nanosheets.

We report on a simple method to fabricate a nitrogen N-containing nano-graphite with magnetic moments. By using chlorinated phthalonitrile as the building block and potassium K as the coupling reagent, a paramagnetic N-containing nano-graphite has been successfully prepared. From transmission electron microscopy images, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction experiments, it is evident that the reaction product consists of randomly connected flakes of nano-graphite that contains large amount of N-decorated vacancy and edges. Interestingly, this N-containing nano-graphite shows a Curie like paramagnetism that originates isolated magnetic moments on N-decorated vacancies and edges. These results make the N-containing nano-graphite a promising candidate for versatile applications in the fields of magnetics and spintronics. (C) 2017 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Highly-ordered fused-ring poly copper phthalocyanine (PCuPc) was prepared using copper octacyanophthalocyanine as a building block, and two-dimensional (2D) square superlattices were directly observed by the transmission electron microscopy. Remarkably, we have found a formation of polymer network that consists of a 2D porous PCuPc sheet in which the centers of phthalocyanine units are alternately occupied by Cu atom and vacancy. Using this "half-filling" PCuPc, it must be possible to create alternating arrangements for transition metal centers, and therefore control the magnetic properties of the 2D carbon sheets. © 2017 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland. Though the crystal growth technology of SiC is improving steadily, it is still crucial to reduce crystalline defects which act as carrier recombination (CR) centers and deteriorate device performance. We detected CR centers in a p-type 4H-SiC substrate by observing the intensity change of photoluminescence due to the addition of a below-gap excitation (BGE) light of 0.93 eV. We noticed the temperature and the BGE density dependence of band edge (BE) emission in addition to donor acceptor pair (DAP) emission and discriminated the temperature effect from that of BGE. The BGE density dependence of the PL intensity quenching is different among the BE emission, B0- and C0-lines of the DAP, respectively. It gives us an important clue for understanding CR mechanisms inside the bandgap of SiC.

We investigated a molecular order of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl):[6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester thin film by judging from the Raman spectrum, and a crystallinity parameter was estimated as the molecular order of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl). The crystallinity parameter of spin-coated sample increased with increasing annealing temperature, and this result relates to the photoconversion efficiency of photovoltaic cell. This means that the high photoconversion efficiency can be obtained due to the high crystallinity parameter of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl), and this result is reasonable compared to the previous researches. In addition, the crystallinity parameter of electrosprayed thin film increased with increasing applied voltage, corresponding to the supply speed of solution. Since the droplet size increased with increasing supply speed, the evaporation speed of solvent (o-dichlorobenzene) became slow at the high applied voltage. Therefore, the slow evaporation speed of solvent caused the molecular order in the active layer. As a result, the maximum of approximately of 95 % was achieved even though the sample was not thermally annealed, and this value corresponds to the thermal annealing at 100 A degrees C.

An electrospray deposition (ESD) is a solution process, which has several advantages, such as the utilization of low concentration solution, the large device area using a continuous roll-to-roll process, and the simple setup without vacuum condition. By applying a high voltage to a solution, mists are generated from a tip of glass capillary, leading to the formation of organic thin film. Halogenated solvents are often used, but the amount of solvent should be reduced from the environmental aspect. Thus, by using the ESD and the non-halogenated solvent, the manufacturing process is friendly to environment. In this research, by measuring current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics and atomic force microscope (AFM) images, we evaluated OPV characteristics and root mean square (RMS) roughness of devices fabricated using the non-halogenated solvent. By adding 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO), the photo conversion efficiency (PCE) was drastically improved, and the PCE of 5.45% was achieved.

We investigated crystallinity parameters and ordering domains of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) blended in [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester films, which were fabricated by pulsed electrospray deposition methods. The crystallinity parameter and the ordering domain were estimated from Raman and optical absorption spectra, respectively. As a result, they were improved with decreasing the off time of pulse voltage, corresponding to the slow evaporation speed of solvent. In addition, both the space-charge limited current mobility and the photoconversion efficiency showed same trend. A highest photoconversion efficiency of 1.11 % was achieved without the thermal annealing process after depositing the active layer.

We have studied trap centers and nonradiative (NRR) recombination centers in a Ba3Si6O12N2:Eu2+ (BSON), one of promising materials for efficient and stable phosphors in white LED lamp applications. The energy distribution of four trap centers was obtained by thermoluminescence (TL) with the excitation energy of 5.59eV. By superposing a below-gap excitation light of 1.77eV and observing the intensity change of the 5d-4f emission of Eu2+ centered at 2.36eV in our two-wavelength excited photoluminescence (TWEPL) measurement, both transient and steady state enhancement were observed. Such peculiar behavior of photo-stimulation is attributed to the coexistence of trap centers and NRR centers: the photoexcitation of electrons from trap centers generates the transient component, while that from NRR centers maintains the steady state component. An optical detection of relatively faint contribution of defects became possible in order to improve further the reliability and efficiency of phosphor materials. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

We synthesized Zn3V2O8, CsVO3 and Cs3VO4 by sol-gel process and studied their crystalline and luminescent properties. By optimizing the sintering conditions, pure phases of aim samples including Cs3VO4 were obtained. The annealing temperatures of 450°C for CsVO3, 600°C for Cs3VO4, respectively, are lower than that of 750°C for Zn3V2O8 at the same duration of 12h. The Cs3VO4 showed quantum yield of 90% with the half-width of 120nm. It became clear that the Cs-V-O system, especially Cs3VO 4, is promising for white LED applications.

We have theoretically studied the magnetotransport properties in bipolar conductors under consideration of the simultaneous presence of an external magnetic field, left-right asymmetric carrier scattering due to spin-orbit interactions, and spin-polarized holes/electrons, predicting both positive and negative transverse magnetoresistance (TMR) terms, the mechanisms of which are completely different from the conventional mechanism in bipolar conductors. The positive TMR term is predicted only for the asymmetric carrier scattering case, the sign of which is the same (negative) between a hole and an electron. The other case of asymmetric scattering, the sign of which is opposite between a hole and an electron, was also determined to always show a negative TMR. Our proposed TMR was experimentally evidenced from the magnetotransport and magnetization measurements of a compensated metal, YH2. Also, application to logic gates is discussed on the basis of our proposed mechanism. (C) 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

By choosing zinc acetate dehydrate (Zn(CH3COO)(2)center dot 2H(2)O) and ammonium metavanadate (NH4VO3) as starting materials, we succeeded in fabricating Zn3V2O8 phase suitable for broad light emission by sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope, photoluminescence (PL) and PL quantum yield (PL-QY) measurements have been performed for analyzing the relation between crystallographic and light emission characteristics. The PL-QY is determined by both the crystalline phase purity of the Zn3V2O8 phase defined by XRD patterns and the crystalline size. With optimizing the sintering condition at a slightly Zn-rich side, a pure Zn3V2O8 phase with enough large crystalline size was obtained with the PL-QY value of 52 %, which was higher than our previously obtained value by solid state reaction.

Instabilities of Eu-complex against ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation and annealing are important problems to solve before they can be practically applied in several applications, such as white light-emitting diodes, bioimaging sensors, and wavelength conversion films for silicon photovoltaic cells. By now, our research group demonstrated an encapsulation technique of tris (2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)(1,10-phenanthroline) europium (III) (Eu(TTA)(3)phen) using the solvothermal process as a final annealing process of sol-gel synthesis. In this paper, we investigated the optimized starting solution of the sol-gel process to improve the long-term stability of Eu (TTA)(3)phen by changing the silane alkoxide and solvent. The long-term stability was improved by annealing at the high pressure condition (solvothermal process), and the longest half brightness time of 9.8 h was achieved while irradiating with the UV light of 360 nm and 5 mW/cm(2). One possible reason for this result is that the hydrolysis of the sol-gel based glass network occurs more efficiently with the high-pressure annealing. As a result, the high-encapsulating efficiency was achieved due to the low organic component in the sol-gel-derived glass network around Eu (TTA)(3)phen. Furthermore, the particle structure with the diameter of less than 50 nm was obtained by coating the sol-gel-derived silica glass around Eu (TTA)(3)phen. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we investigated photoconductive characteristics of blue-sensitive organic photoconductive devices with different silole derivatives. A most important finding is that an external quantum efficiency (EQE) increased with decreasing ionization potential of silole derivative. The significant improved EQE can be explained by the dislocation efficiency of photogenerated carriers in the organic layer, which is estimated from the photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield. A maximum EQE of 52% at -26 MV m(-1) was obtained by optimizing the molecular structure and the concentration of silole derivative. This value is the highest EQE for the reported solution-processed blue-sensitive organic photoconductive device. Another interesting result is that the signal-to-noise ratio was drastically improved by doping silole derivative. (C) 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

A smooth surface of the poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)-doped-(6,6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) thin film was achieved by mixing different solvents for the electrospray deposition method. As a result, the high power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of the bulk-heterojunction organic photovoltaic cell (OPV) was comparable to that obtained in the case of the spin-coating method. By optimizing the additional solvent in o-dichlorobenzene, the P3HT/PCBM active layer with the root-means-square roughness of 2.23nm and the PCE of 2.2% was fabricated employing acetonitrile as the additional solvent. We have theoretically studied a negative magnetoresistance (MR) the mechanism of which is completely different from conventional mechanisms, i.e., spin-related mobility-increased mechanisms and orbital-motion-related mechanisms including a quantum interference effect. Our proposed negative MR is caused by the interplay between a spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and the Lorentz force due to an externally applied magnetic field. We have phenomenologically approached this mechanism using the Drude-like model, in which the carrier scattering by SOI is considered as a transverse scattering term in addition to the longitudinal scattering term due to usual collisions and the Lorentz force term. Also, the possibility of observing our proposed negative MR was discussed by comparing our prediction with experimental results for Ni and Gd films, which were newly measured in this study. Since rhodamine 6G (R6G) has the selective absorption band at the green wavelength regions, the green-sensitive organic photoconductive device was demonstrated using R6G as a photoconductive layer. By optimizing the conductivity of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) used as the carrier transport layer and the concentration of R6G, the maximum external quantum efficiency of 32.6% was obtained at the electric field of -34 MV/m. We found that the low-conductivity of the PEDOT: PSS layer was most important factor for the improved device performance. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio (photocurrent/dark current) was improved by reducing the conductivity of the PEDOT: PSS layer, and the highest value of 60 was achieved.

The photoconductive characteristics of the solution-processed organic device was improved by doping 1,1-dimethyl-2,5-bis(9-ethylcarbazol)-3,4-diphenylsilole(EtCz-silole) in poly(dioctylfluorenyl-co-benzo-thiadiazole) (F8BT). The maximum external quantum efficiency of 27% at - 38 MV/m was achieved when the doping concentration of EtCz-silole was 40 wt%. This value was approximately 160 times higher than that of the reference device with F8BT only (0.17%). In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), i.e., photocurrent density/dark current density was improved by doping EtCz-silole due to the increased photocurrent density and the reduced dark current density. The highest S/N of 1.4 x 10(4) was observed by optimizing the concentration of EtCz-silole.

We achieved the reduced the surface roughness of poly[9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl]-co-1,4-benzo-(2,1,3)-thiadiazole (F8BT) thin film fabricated by the electrospray deposition technique, using two organic solvents. The root mean square (RMS) roughness of the F8BT thin film was reduced by the addition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). A minimum RMS roughness of 23 nm was obtained by optimizing the ratio of DMSO in THF. We found that the low evaporation pressure of the additional organic solvent is an important factor in attaining a smooth surface for F8BT thin film. The current density-voltage-luminance characteristics of the organic light-emitting diode was improved by reducing the surface roughness of the F8BT layer. A maximum luminance of 36.7 cd/cm(2) was obtained, and it was more than 14 times higher than the reference device fabricated by the conventional single organic solvent technique. The ordinary Hall effect (OHE), which is caused by an external magnetic field, was studied as a mechanism for the generation of spin current. It has been theoretically elucidated that, under an open-circuit condition, the OHE can contribute to spin-current generation when spin-polarized electrons and holes are simultaneously present as mobile carriers. This OHE contribution to spin current generation is caused by the steady-state kinematics of electrons and holes whose transverse velocities have the same direction. Although anomalous Hall effects may contribute to spin-current generation, the OHE plays a principal role in the generation of spin current when electrons and holes have approximately the same transport characteristics. The experimental aspects of possible materials for the isomorphic electron and hole systems are argued on the basis of the experimental results of the magnetotransport measurement of yttrium dihydride and preliminary results of the magnetization measurement of hydrogenated films of gadolinium. A high-efficiency bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cell (OPV) was achieved by the electrospray deposition method. The surface roughness of the P3HT:PCBM thin film can be reduced using the mixed solvent consisting of o-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) and acetone. The effect of acetone concentration is related to its dielectric constant. Under an optimized concentration of acetone in o-DCB (20 vol%), the P3HT/PCBM active layer with a smooth surface can be formed, and the power conversion efficiency of the OPV was 1.9%. © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In order to improve the quality of AlGaN-based crystals for deep-UV light emission, we studied photoluminescence (PL) of four MOCVD-grown AlGaN quantum wells from standpoints of growth temperature and In incorporation. A growth at 880℃ with In flow was shown to be best among them based on the comparative measurements on PL spectra, temperature and excitation density dependence. With increasing excitation density, a saturation of nonradiative recombination centers takes place and increases internal quantum efficiency. A simplified rate-equation analysis yielded weak carrier density dependence of nonradiative recombination constant for each sample. Detailed optimization of growth condition with a minute In incorporation is promising for improving the internal quantum efficiency.

The instability of Eu complexes against ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation is an important problem to solve before they can be practically applied in white light-emitting diodes. A novel technique of encapsulating tris(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)(1,10-phenanthroline) europium(III) [Eu(TTA)(3)phen] was investigated using high-pressure annealing (solvothermal process) as a final process in the sol-gel synthesis. The photoluminescence and excitation spectra of encapsulated Eu(TTA)(3)phen samples synthesized by solvothermal and conventional annealing processes were almost the same. A half brightness time of 589 min was achieved while irradiating with UV light of 360 nm and 5mW/cm(2) by optimization of ammonia concentration and annealing temperature. The longest half brightness time was longer than that of encapsulated Eu(TTA)(3)phen synthesized by conventional thermal treatment. One possible reason for this result is that the chemical reaction of the sol-gel based glass network occurs more efficiently with high-pressure annealing. As a result, a high encapsulating efficiency was achieved owing to the small amount of organic component in the sol-gel derived glass network. (C) 2011 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

By doping poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) with poly(2-methoxy-5-(3'-7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (MDMO-PPV), improved photoconductive characteristics were obtained for an organic photoconductive device fabricated by a conventional spin-coating process. This device had a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.4% at 15MV/m when the doping ratio of MDMO-PPV-doped F8BT was 50wt%. This EQE is approximately 5.1 times higher than that (0.47%) of a reference device with undoped F8BT. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio (i.e., photocurrent/dark current) was improved by doping MDMO-PPV because of the reduced dark current density. The highest signal-to-noise ratio obtained was 447.

Optical degradation characteristics of Eu(TTA)(3)phen were improved by annealing in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). In addition, photoluminescence (PL) and PL excitation spectra of solvent-annealed Eu(TTA)(3)phen were almost the same as the original Eu(TTA)(3)phen. This result suggests that the solvent-annealing in DMF is benefit to improve the long-term stability of Eu(TTA)(3)phen.

Though the dependence of intensity and energy (1.27〜1.95eV) of the below-gap excitation on the photoluminescence intensity change, we found that Si-doping in both barrier and well layers reduced the density of below-gap states in the QW region.

In order to improve the stability of red phosphor with efficient and high color-purity characteristics under ultraviolet excitation, we encapsulated Eu(TTA)(3)phen(tris(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)(1,10-phenanthroline)europium(III)) by sol-gel derived silica glasses and studied their photoluminescence (PL) characteristics. The dependence of pH values in the starting solution revealed that the process condition should be within the modest region with the optimum pH value around 6-7. The PL intensity increased with increasing the concentration of Eu(TTA)(3)phen initially, then it showed saturating tendency above 0.6 mol%. An improvement of reliability by the glass encapsulation was exemplified by monitoring the long-term PL intensity under constant UV irradiation. We consider that the glass network carefully prepared by sol-gel process is effective for preventing free oxygen and water from attacking Eu(TTA)(3)phen molecule without loss of PL output.

Optical degradation characteristic of Eu-complex is one of the most important problems to solve for practical white light-emitting diodes. Eu-complex generates bright red emission by the ultraviolet (UV) irradiation; however, it is easily decomposed by reacting oxygen and vapor when the UV light is irradiated. Therefore the photoluminescence (PL) intensity was reduced by irradiating UV light. In this paper, we demonstrated the drastic improved long term stability by annealing in an autoclave container compared to a conventional annealing in an electric furnace. By optimizing the concentration of starting solution of sol-gel process and the annealing temperature, the PL intensity change of Eu-complex was reduced. In addition, the PL quantum yield of encapsulated sample was almost same as that of Eu-complex without the encapsulation. The most likely cause is that the dense glass network was formed around Eu-complex during the high pressure annealing. These results indicate the autoclave process is useful technique to improve the optical degradation characteristics, and the practical long term stability will be realized in a near future by optimizing the fabrication condition.

Since Eu-complex generates bright red-emission by a violet excitation, it has been attracted much attention as phosphors for white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the organic-ligand of Eu-complex is easily decomposed by free oxygen and water. In previous papers, we demonstrated the encapsulation technique of Eu-complex using the sol-gel derived silica glass. In this research, we used tetraethoxysilane, deionized water, ethanol, N,N-Dimethoxyformamide, and ammonia for a starting solution to form the silica glass around Eu-complex. By optimizing the fabrication condition, the nano-sized Eu(TTA)_3phen encapsulated by the sol-gel derived silica glass was successfully achieved. The Eu(TTA)_3phen powder showed a half brightness time of 67 minute while irradiating the ultraviolet light with the center wavelength of 360nm and the optical intensity of 5mW/cm^2, however, that of the encapsulated sample indicated that of 262 minutes. The improvement in the half brightness time was realized approximately 4-times by optimizing the encapsulating process.

Organic-inorganic hybrids based on the layered perovskite framework ([CH3(CH2)17NH2]2PbI 4 and [CH3(CH2)17NH 2]2PbCl4) have been naturally formed by intercalating lead hallide into organic (alkylanmiine) Langmuir-Blodgett films. Only diffraction peaks corresponding to (0 0 n) of the layered perovskite were observed in the X-ray diffraction pattern of the deposited film. X-ray diffraction measurement demonstrated that the layer structure is oriented parallel to the film plane. A solution-processed organic photoconductive device sensitive to the only blue-light was demonstrated using poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT). The spectral selectivity was good enough to divide the incident light into a blue component, indicating the possibility of color separation without a prism for video cameras in combination with green-and red-sensitive devices. The maximum conversion efficiency of 190 mu A/W was observed while irradiating the blue-light (475 nm) and applying the voltage (2.4 V). In addition, the response speed of more than 30 Hz was achieved, and it was fast enough to apply this photoconductive device to practical applications.

The frustrated spin system of quasi-one dimension magnet of Ca 3Co2-xMxO6 (M:metal) single crystals has been investigated in a temperature range between 10 K and RT and in a magnetic field range up to 20 T. We aim at the application of the unstable spin state as a flip-flop circuit device using the behavior of the spin frustration in the future. For these purposes, the basic behaviors of the magnetism and the magneto-transport phenomena were studied by the samples of various metals M. The stable state and unstable state of the magneto-resistance were apparently discriminated.

The diagnosis of iron-based materials was performed by using many magnetic sensors such as a small Hall element for leakage flux observations after polarizations, a locally sensitive fluxgate sensor available down to 100pT, by a pick-up coil for magnetic noise observation and by a triple-fold coil for eddy current detector. The spatially high resolution of the magnetic sensors was attained as narrow as 100 mu m or less with the same order lift-off distance depending on the situation. By using these detectors, we detected the positions with the relatively high stress in comparison with the other positions. Residual stress detection less than 0.1 % in ferromagnetic material was attained in this study by deriving the expectations of field strength for magnetic noise occurrence. Positions with small holes inside the material were precisely detected by an eddy current detector, composed of a triple-fold coil with thin amorphous ribbon and attached from the material surface. The small magnetic field emission from a new type flux gate sensor was also attained by composing a double coil set for flux gate with the opposite coil current coil each other.

We report the results of elastic and inelastic neutron-scattering experiments on the Haldane-gap quantum antiferromagnet Ni(C5D14N2)5N(PF6) performed at mK temperatures in a wide range of magnetic field applied parallel to the S = 1 spin chains. Even though this geometry is closest to an ideal axially symmetric configuration, the Haldane gap closes at the critical field Hc∼4T, but reopens again at higher fields. The field dependence of the two lowest magnon modes is experimentally studied and the results are compared with the predictions of several theoretical models. We conclude that of several existing theories, only the recently proposed model [Zheludev et al., cond-mat/0301424] is able to reproduce all the features observed experimentally for different field orientations. © 2004 The American Physical Society.

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the Haldane-gap quantum antiferromagnet Ni(C5D14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) are performed at mK temperatures in magnetic fields of almost twice the critical field H-c applied perpendicular to the spin chains. Above H-c a reopening of the spin gap is clearly observed. In the high-field Neel-ordered state the spectrum is dominated by three distinct excitation branches. A theoretical model consistently describing the experimental data is proposed.

A new spin S = 1/2 antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice {Cu-3(titmb)2(OCOCH3)(6)} . H2O {titmb = 1,3,52 tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6 trimethylbenzene} has been grown and we measured the heat capacity at low temperatures by a relaxation method. We have found two-peak structure in the temperature dependence of the heat capacity. The higher temperature peak is explained as due to a short-range magnetic ordering in two dimension. The lower temperature peak suggests the presence of an energy gap in this S = 1/2 Kagome antiferromagnet. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

NDMAP, Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6), is a quasi-one-dimensional S = 1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with Haldane-gap energies of 22 and 5.5 K for excitations polarized parallel and perpendicular to the chain c-axis, respectively. We have extended the specific-heat measurements by Honda et al. in this compound to 150 mK in temperature and 18 T in magnetic field, employing a novel relaxation calorimeter. The experiment provides an accurate determination of the exponent for the transition line for the field-assisted ordered phase. In addition, a new feature has been found in the phase diagram at around 14 T. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

High-field neutron diffraction studies of the new quantum-disordered S=1 linear-chain antiferromagnet Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(ClO4) (NDMAZ) are reported. At T=70 mK, at a critical field H-c = 13.4 T applied along the [013] direction, a phase transition to a commensurate Neel-like ordered state is observed. The results are discussed in the context of existing theories of quantum phase transitions in Haldane-gap antiferromagnets, and in comparison with previous studies of the related system Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) (NDMAP).

We have performed magnetization (M) measurements on the S = 1 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet, Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) (NDMAP) with a vibrating sample magnetometer in a static field (H). In the temperature (T) dependence of the susceptibility (M/H), we observed that a transition from the gapped phase to a gapless one occurs at a finite H. On increasing H further, we observed a bending in the M/H-T curve and the M/H takes almost constant value below the bending temperature (T-B). Since T-B corresponds to the critical temperature determined from heat capacity measurements, we identify the T independent susceptibility to the perpendicular susceptibility of an anisotropic antiferromagnet. We also observed a change in the M-H curves of NDMAP at finite H. The value of H where M changes corresponds to the phase boundary between the field induced long-range ordered and paramagnetic phases determined from the heat capacity measurement. Inelastic neutron scattering on deuterated single-crystal samples is used to study Haldane-gap excitations in the new S=1 one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet Ni(C5D14N2)(2)N-3(PF6), that was recently recognized as an ideal model system for high-field studies. The Haldane gap energies Delta (x)=0.42(3) meV, Delta (y) = 0.52(6) meV, and Delta (t) = 1.9(1) meV, for excitations polarized along the a, b, and c crystallographic axes, respectively, are measured. The dispersion relation is studied for momentum transfers both along and perpendicular to the chains' direction. The in-chain exchange constant J = 2.8 meV is found to be much larger than interchain coupling, J(y) = 1.8(4) x 10(-3) meV and J(x) = 4(3) x 10(-4) meV, along the b and a axes, respectively. The results are discussed in the context of future experiments in high magnetic fields.

Field-induced commensurate transverse magnetic ordering is observed in the Haldane-gap compound Ni(C5D14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) by means of neutron diffraction. Depending on the direction of applied field, the high-field phase is shown to be either a three-dimensional ordered Neel state or a short-range ordered state with dominant two-dimensional spin correlations. The structure of the high-field phase is determined, and properties of the observed quantum phase transition are discussed.

Detailed results of heat capacity and magnetization measurements are reported on a single crystal sample of the spin S=1 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenbrrg antiferromagnet Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6), abbreviated NDMAP. From these results, we constructed the magnetic field (H) versus temperature phase diagram of this compound which exhibits the quantum disordered Haldane, field-induced long-range-ordered (LRO) and thermally disordered paramagnetic phases. The phase boundary curve separating the paramagnetic and LRO phases is anisotropic; the increase of the Neel temperature (T-N) with H along the a and b axes is more rapid than that along the c axis. We calculated T-N as a function of H by taking into account the interchain coupling as the form of a mean held. The calculation of the staggered susceptibility of the S=1 one-dimensional antiferromagnet with an easy-plane anisotropy shows quite different behavior in the different field directions, resulting in the anisotropic phase boundary curve. A good agreement is obtained between theory and experiment using the exchange and anisotropy constants obtained from the neutron scattering experiment.

The phase transition of the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) in an applied magnetic field (H) is studied from the measurement of the heat capacity (C-p). There is no anomaly in C-p below H=4 T (H parallel to the chain) or H=6 T (H perpendicular to the chain). A sharp anomaly in C-p is observed above H=4 T (H parallel to the chain) or H=6 T (H perpendicular to the chain) indicating the occurrence of long-range ordering. The H dependence of the critical temperature is studied and a temperature versus magnetic field phase diagram is constructed. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(99)28508-8].

  • Field-induced magnetic long-range order in the ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain system (CH3)(2)CHNH3CuCl3 observed by specific heat measurements

JOURNAL OF THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Volume:67, Number:11, First page:3913, Last page:3917, Nov. 1998, [Reviewed]
The compound (CH3)(2)CHNH3CuCl3 has recently been found to be an ideal ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with the energy gap Delta/k = 17 similar to 18K [H. Manaka et al.: J. Phys. Sec. Jpn. 66 (1997) 564]. When an external field H is applied to this compound, the energy gap should vanish at the critical field H-c1 = Delta/g mu(B). Just above H-c1, the three-dimensional magnetic long-range order is expected, if the interchain coupling exists. Motivated by this expectation, we performed specific heat measurements over a temperature range from 0.5 to 5 K applying H up to 12 T. As a result. we found a lambda-type anomaly of specific heat over 10 similar to 12T, which indicates a transition to the three-dimensional long range order. The temperature at which the lambda-type anomaly appears increases with increasing H. The critical field obtained by extrapolating the curve of the lambda peak position versus H is 9.0 T; which is close to that obtained from a magnetization measurement.

The dimerization of the famous Haldane gap Ni2+ chain compound with nitro-nitrito bridges (abbreviated as NENP by the physicists) has been achieved by involving two monoanions in the structure. One of these anions, [Ln(NO3)(4)(CH3OH)(2)](-), with Ln = lanthanide element or Y, is unprecedented.

We have performed a heat capacity (Cp) measurement using a relaxation method on a single-crystal sample of the S = 1 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C5H14N2)2N3(ClO4) in high magnetic fields and at low temperatures. An anomaly in Cphas been observed at about 0.9 K and at 12 T. We interpret this anomaly as an indication of field induced long-range magnetic ordering. Q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. A series of compounds, [Ni(AA)2X]Y (AA=diamines, tetramines etc; X=N3and NO2; Y=C104, PF6etc) with S=1 have been synthesized, and their magnetic properties and crystal structures have been investigated. They have linear-chain structures. It has been found that the magnitude of the Haldane gaps can be controlled by substituting the bridging groups(X) and in-plane ligands(AA). On the other hand, [Ni([15]aneN4)N3]PF6, [Ni([14]aneN4)N3]ClO4·H2O and [Ni(en)2NO2]BF4show spin glass behaviors.

From a heat capacity measurement in high magnetic fields and at low temperatures, we have obtained evidence for a magnetic ordering in the S = 1 quasi-one dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C5H14N2)N3(ClO4). The transition temperature is ∼0.6 K at 12 T parallel to the chain axis.

A new S=1 quasi-one-dimensional compound Ni([15]aneN4)N3(PF6) (chemical formula NiC11N7H26PF6, in short NPAP) has been synthesized. Both crystal structure and magnetic properties of this compound have been characterized using the single crystal samples. NPAP crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, with space group P2nn (No.34), Z=2 and unit-cell parameters a=11.332(5)Å, b=13.861(4)Å and c=6.173(2)Å, respectively. The crystal structure was solved using direct method and the refinement converged at R(Rw)=0.062(0.062). A superlattice along the c-axis was conformed by both X-ray Weissenberg film and powder diffraction method. In addition, a disorder of the packing sequence of the ([15]aneN4) in-plane ligands along the c-axis was proposed. The temperature dependence of magnetization of a single crystal of NPAP was measured using a SQUID magnetometer. We have observed a large difference in zero field cooled and field cooled magnetizations below about 20K. We have also measured the AC susceptibility of this sample in zero static magnetic field. A cusp is observed at about 22K in the temperature dependence of AC susceptibility.

We present structural studies of the spin-1/2 honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet, Cu-2(pymca)(3)(ClO4) (pymca: pyrimidine-2-carboxylate), using synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments. Previous research reported that its crystal structure consists of a regular honeycomb lattice, which exhibits quantum spin-liquid behavior. However, due to its threefold Cu2+ site symmetry, this proposed crystal structure cannot describe Jahn-Teller distortion. We analyzed the structure of Cu-2(pymca)(3)(ClO4), including superlattice reflections that were overlooked during previous X-ray diffraction studies of the material, and clarified that its distorted honeycomb lattice consists of Cu-2(pymca)(3) sections. Further investigation of Cu-2(pymca)(3)(ClO4) crystal structure may reveal magnetic susceptibilities of the distorted honeycomb lattice.

Since a intracellular pH is an important bioactive factor, a detection method has been required. We investigated a FRET(Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer)-based pH sensor conjugated with a CdSe/ZnS quantum dot and a fluorescent organic dye. In this paper, we estimated a fluorescence spectrum of the CdSe/ZnS-dye mixed aqueous solution, and this reaction is found to continue up to 30 min by measuring fluorescence spectral change. However, a most serious problem is that unreacted raw materials cause the low sensitivity of the pH sensor. Wherein, we attempted to fractionate the reactant by using a gel filtration column due to different velocities of the CdSe/ZnS quantum dot and the fluorescent dye. This result shows that the unreacted CdSe/ZnS quantum dot phosphor and fluorescent dye can be successfully removed through the the column, and the different numbers of fluorescence dye around the CdSe/ZnS quantum dot can be realized. Finally, we succeeded in fabricating the sensitivity of the high pH sensor. In addition, we confirmed to respond pH by using a part of the separated pH sensor exchanged buffer by the ultrafiltration.

Zinc oxide nano-fibers with the high-carrier mobility have been required for inverted organic photovoltaic cells, and they were formed between the transparent anode and the organic active layer. Therefore, many previous papers demonstrated that the zinc oxide nano-fiber can be formed by the electrospinning method using the precursor solution of sol-gel processes. However, the controllability of the fiber size is not satisfied for practical applications of inverted organic photovoltaic cells. In this research, we investigated the molar concentration of precursor solution and the additive amount of PVP to control the diameter of the zinc oxide nano-fiber. As a result, the diameter decreased with decreasing molar concentration of the precursor solution and additive amount of PVP. The minimum diameter of 30 run was achieved at the PVP concentration of 0.06 g/ml, and the photoconversion efficiency of the inverted organic photovoltaic cell became 2.31% under the irradiation of AM1.5 light.

Nowadays, our research group investigated a wet process, called as an electrospray deposition method. However, the deposition rate of this method is relatively low compared to conventional solution processes and the multilayer structure is difficult to be fabricated by this method. To solve the above mentioned problem, we investigated the ultrasonic atomization process and the substrate heating technique. In this work, we succeeded in the smooth surface roughness of TFB and F8BT films by controlling the substrate temperature. In addition, an organic light-emitting diode was demonstrated and the maximum luminance of 7,590 cd/m^2 and the current efficiency of 4.39 cd/A were achieved.

We have succeeded in fabricating pure Zn_3V_2O_8 phase suitable for broad light emission by sol-gel process with zinc acetate dehydrate (Zn(CH_3COOO)_2.・2H_2O) and ammonium metavanadate (NH_4VO_3) as starting materials. Measurements of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope, photoluminescence (PL) and PL quantum yield (PL-QY) have been carved out for the characterization of crystallographic and light emission properties As a result, the PL-QY is determined by both the crystalline phase purity (CP) of the Zn_3V_2O_8 phase defined by XRD patterns and the crystalline size. With optimizing the process condition at a slightly Zn-rich side, a pure Zn3V2O8 phase with enough large crystalline size was obtained. The PL-QY value reached to 52%, which was higher than our previously obtained value by solid state reaction. The effect of incorporating transition metals on the emission spectrum was measured in case of Mn and Co. A possibility of Zn_3V_2O_8 as a possible phosphor material for while light application is presented.

By removal of coal gas, light oils, and volatiles (naphthalene and similar small polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) from coal tar, a black and tarry residue can be obtained as "coal-pitch" in 5-10% weight of consumed coal. Therefore, the usage of coal-pitch for several organic devices will lead the environmental-friendly and drastically cheap fabrication process of organic molecules compared to the conventional chemical synthesis. In this study, we investigated an organic light-emitting diode with coal-pitch solutions dissolved by different organic solvents as an emitting layer. The photoluminescence spectrum of coal-pitch solution changed from 429 nm to 550 nm by changing the solvent, and the highest luminance was 22.4 cd/m^2 at 24 V when tetrahydrofuran was used. In addition, we can separate the tetrahydrofuran-dissolved coal-pitch solution by using the preparative thin layer chromatography. As a result, the maximum luminance of 22.4 cd/m^2 was achieved at the applied voltage of 16 V. This result shows that high-device performance will be realized by the further separation process of coal-pitch solution and the optimized device structure.

An organic image sensor has expected for a future sensing device owing to the small size and the high resolution. The organic image sensor consists of three organic photoconductive devices with the selective absorption band at three primary colors, respectively. By now, we have investigated an organic photoconductive device fabricated by a spin-coating process. In this study, we researched the relationship between the HOMO level of silole derivative and the performance of the blue-sensitive organic photoconductive device with F8BT as a blue-sensitive material and silole derivative as a dopant. As a result, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) and the S/N increased by doping silole derivative with lower HOMO level than F8BT. This result indicates that an improved device performance was attributed to the high-charge separation efficiency in the photoconductive layer by removing holes from F8BT to silole. We also investigated the influence of the doping concentration of NPh_3-silole on the device characteristics, the highest EQE of 52 % and S/N of 4.3×10^4 were realized at the doping concentration of 50 wt%.

We demonstrated the smooth surface roughness of the poly[9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl]-co-1,4-benzo-(2,1,3)-thiadiazole (F8BT) thin film fabricated by the electrospray deposition technique. The root mean square roughness of the F8BT thin film was reduced by the addition of dimethyl sulfoxide in tetrahydrofuran. Furthermore, the organic light-emitting diode was also demonstrated by this method.

A high-stability Eu complex has been achieved by coating with a silica glass via a low temperature sol-gel process using deuterated methanol. A three-dimensional glass network, protects the Eu complex from free oxygen and/or water to change the ligand structure. In addition, the chemical bond of the deuterated Eu complex is more stable than that of the conventional Eu complex, Therefore, we achieved a high-thermal stability Eu complex encapsulated by a sol-gel derived silica glass using deuterated methanol instead of ethanol.

We demonstrated a blue-sensitive organic photoconductive device fabricated by an electrospray deposition method. Poly[9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl]-co-1,4-benzo-(2,1,3)-thiadiazole (F8BT) was chosen as a blue-sensitive polymer, and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 0.22% was achieved at the irradiated optical intensity of 3.9 mW/cm2. The absorption spectrum of F8BT neat film showed that the selectivity of spectral responses at the blue wavelength region was good enough to divide the incident light into blue color components. These results indicate the possibility of a color separation without a prism for high resolution cameras by combination of green and red sensitive organic photoconductive devices. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. A high-stability organic-inorganic composite emitting film has been realized via a sol-gel process using an optimized silane alkoxide and Eu-complex. We found that the long-term and thermal stabilities were improved by using a combined starting solution of phenyltrimethoxysilane and tetrametoxysilane as encapsulating agent. The resulting emitting film exhibited sharp red-luminescence under ultraviolet (UV) excitation and a high transparency in the visible wavelength region. In addition. no decrease in photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield was observed after thermal treatment up to 180 degrees C. and the reduction in PL intensity during UV irradiation was suppressed by encapsulating the Eu-complex within the sod-gel derived silica glass. In order to improve the conversion efficiency of a silicon-photovoltaic (PV) module, we investigated the combination with a wavelength conversion film (WCF), which consists of Eu chelate particles encapsulated by the sol-gel derived silica glass. The photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectrum of Eu chelate shows that the violet light below 400 nm is effectively converted to the red emission at 613 nm. Since the PV cell has higher sensitivity at the red wavelength region compared to the violet region, Eu chelate is one of the suitable material for a WCF. The diameter of fabricated sol-gel encapsulated Eu chelate was larger than the wavelength of irradiated sunlight, therefore, the transmittance of a WCF decreased with increasing the concentration of Eu chelate. The short circuit current (J(SC)) was increased by inserting the the WCF on the front side of Si-PV cell compared to the reference module (glass/ethylene vinyl acetate/WCF without Eu chelate/Si-PV cell/EVA/back-film), and the maximum increase of Delta J(SC) was 1.03 mA/cm(2) compared to the reference module. However, the maximum Delta J(SC) of fabricated module was almost same as the conventional Si-PV cell due to the refractive index mismatch of each layers. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In order to improve the stability of high color-purity red phosphors for ultraviolet excitation, we encapsulated an Eu-chelate, Eu(HFA)(3)(TPPO)(2), by sol-gel derived glass networks and studied its thermal stability as well as photoluminescence (PL) characteristics. The PL quantum yield of an encapsulated sample was 14 times higher than that without encapsulation after annealing at 160 degrees C for 2 h in air. Three-dimensional glass networks with a sufficient density were shown to reduce thermal quenching of Eu(HFA)(3)(TPPO)(2). Therefore, it is revealed that the surface coating of luminous chelates by sol-gel glasses is an effective way of inorganic and organic hybridization for high-stability of chelate bonding against free oxygen and water. In order to understand physical properties of the field-induced phase of a spin-gap system, we performed high-field and multifrequency electron-spin-resonance (ESR) measurements on single crystals of the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet, namely, the Haldane magnet, Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6), abbreviated as NDMAP. This compound has an energy gap (Haldane gap) at zero field and one of the excited triplet branches goes down on applying magnetic fields, resulting in the gap closing at a critical field H-c around 5 T that is slightly different depending on the field direction. First, we studied the angular dependence of spin excitations below 14 T. Two sets of resonance modes caused by two types of Ni2+ chains in NDMAP are observed. These data are analyzed by comparing with a phenomenological field theory (PFT). The experimental results between H-c and about 12 T are well fitted with the calculated ones by the PFT, but the fitting above 12 T is not satisfactory. Therefore, we studied spin excitations at much higher magnetic fields up to about 55 T. Several ESR signals are observed above H-c for each crystallographic axis, and one or two of them survive in the high-field region above about 15 T. One mode approaches a paramagnetic resonance line at high fields and the other mode broadly changes with magnetic fields. These modes fit well with the conventional antiferromagnetic resonance modes with biaxial anisotropy. This result suggests that the quantum fluctuations are suppressed by strong magnetic field and the spin excitations change from a quantum nature to a classical one in high magnetic fields.

The S=1 quasi-one dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6), abbreviated as NDMAP, has been studied by electron spin resonance (ESR) in a magnetic field exceeding the critical field (H-c) above which this compound shows a long range order (LRO) at sufficiently low temperatures. Our recently developed ESR apparatus with a dilution refrigerator is utilized to study the spin excitations of NDMAP above H-c for H parallel to c, because this compound exhibits the LRO below about 1 K. The spin excitation modes above H-c observed below 1 K do not show any difference from those at 1.5 K and the lowest excitation mode observed at 30 mK in the inelastic neutron experiments above H-c was not observed at about 200 mK in this study. Accordingly, the result suggests that the lowest excitation mode is very sensitive to temperature.

We demonstrated an improved durability of Eu(HFA)3(TPPO) 2 [tris(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)- europium(III) 1,2-phenylenebis(diphenylphosphine oxide)1 encapsulated by a sol-gel derived silica glass film. The film was constructed using phenyltrimethoxysilane and diethoxy- dimethylsilane as a starting solution. Unlike cases in which conventional tetramethoxysilane is used, no decrease in internal quantum efficiency was observed at room temperature. We further improved the thermal and long-term stability of Eu(HFA)3(TPPO)2 inside the transparent glass film at elevated annealing temperatures when compared to the Eu(HFA)3(TPPO)2 powder itself: The photoluminescence quantum efficiency of the transparent film was 60% at 160°C and 32% at 200°C. Properly prepared glass networks protect the Eu chelate from free oxygen and water in the transparent glass film, which is promising for future practical applications.

We have performed electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals of the S = 1 onedimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) in magnetic fields up to about 55 T and at frequencies up to about 2 THz. For both H parallel to chain and H perpendicular to chain, we have found that one of the two or three excitation modes that are observed in magnetic fields between the critical field (H-c) and about 15 T survives in the high-field region. This mode approaches a paramangetic resonance line at high-fields and fits well with the conventional antiferromagnetic resonance mode with easy-plane anisotropy. This result suggests that the spin-excitation modes above H, change from modes affected by quantum fluctuations to those expected for a conventional antiferromagnet.

Effects of Zn impurities on a spin-ladder material Na2Co(2)(C2O4)(3)(H2O)(2) are reported. We measured, the magnetic susceptibility, chi on a single crystal and find that chi at a high field shows a broad peak at about 20 K and a Curie-tail at low temperatures. We interpret the low temperature Curie-tail as due to an induced moment around Zn impurities. At a low field, we find a spin-glass behavior evidenced by a difference in chi for field cooled and zero field cooled measurements. We present a possible mechanism for the appearance of this spin glass. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the results of high-field multi-frequency ESR experiment on the S = 1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3 (PF6) for the fields up to about 55 T and the frequencies up to about 2 THz. We have found that excitation branches above the critical field (H-c) where the energy gap closes change into one branch around 15 T which becomes close to the paramagnetic line at high fields. The branch above 15 T fits well the conventional antiferromagnetic resonance mode with easy planar anisotropy. We compare the results with those in a weakly coupled antiferromagnetic dimer compound KCuCl3 and discuss the origin of the branches observed above Hc. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Positive muon spin-relaxation (mu+SR) measurements on a spin-ladder material Na2Co2(C2O4)(3)(H2O)(2) are reported. We find that the relaxation rate, lambda, under a longitudinal field of 3950 Oe increases with decreasing temperature, T, and is a maximum at T-peak similar or equal to 18 K. Below T-peak, lambda decreases with decreasing T. This finding implies the observation of a spin gap formation by mu+SR technique. The approach of the exponent beta in the relaxation function to 0.5 with decreasing T suggests a freezing of dilute moments. Below about 5 K, we observe a sinusoidal oscillation in the time spectrum in zero applied field, which indicates an onset of long-range magnetic order. All these observations give microscopic evidence that the spin-ladder material is close to a quantum critical point.

The frustrated spin system of quasi-one dimension magnet of Ca_3Co_<2-x>M_xO_6(M: metal) single crystals has been investigated in a temperature range between 10K and RT and in a magnetic field range up to 20 T. We aim at the application of the unstable spin state as a flip-flop circuit device using the behavior of the spin frustration in the future. For these purposes, the basic behaviors of the magneto-transport phenomena were studied by using samples with different M. The stable state and unstable state of the magneto-resistances were apparently found in this experiment.

Na2Co2(C2O4)(3)(H2O)(2) consists of two-leg ladders of Co2+ ions. It was reported that this is a candidate compound to show a magnetic state in the vicinity of the gapped and the Neel ordered state, where the quantum phase transition occurs [Z. Honda , Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 087204 (2005)]. Neutron scattering experiments were performed to study the magnetic ground state of this compound. It is found that the system is well described by an almost isolated dimer model, in which dimers are formed between spins along the rung direction and the interaction along the rung direction is much larger than that along the leg direction. The intradimer coupling constant is determined to be 5.2 meV. Other interactions were found to be very small.

We report the results of electron spin resonance (ESR) and magnetization measurements in high magnetic fields up to about 52T on single crystal and powder samples of the cobalt compound Na2Co2(C2O4)(3)(H2O)(2) which consists of two-leg ladders of Co2+ ions. This compound was reported to be a candidate which show a signature of a quantum phase transition from a spin-liquid to a Neel ordered state [Z. Honda et al.: Phys. Rev. Lett. 95 (2005) 087204]. From our ESR and magnetization experiments, we, however, have found that the compound is well described by almost isolated antiferromagnetic dimers which are formed by the nearest Co spins on the rungs and the interaction along the rung direction is much larger than that along the leg one. The ESR frequency-field diagram, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization are in good agreement with those calculated from this isolated dimer model.

Temperature dependences of a magnetic and an orbital Bragg reflection at the Mn L-2,L-3 edges of Lac(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) have been collected. The temperature evolution of the orbital reflection depends strongly on the X-ray energy and reflects the different order parameters, which are assigned to orbitals and Jahn-Teller distortions. The Jahn-Teller order parameter saturates at 150 K, whereas the orbital order parameter gradually increases. These results are discussed in context with the possible driving forces, the orbital-orbital super exchange and the Jahn-Teller strain field interaction.

Fe-Si alloy system was investigated on the magneto-resistance (MR) effects in a temperature range between 77K-RT and in high fields up to 30 T. The samples were prepared by sputtering Fe(200 nm) on n-Si(1 0 0) surface and variously annealed up to beta-FeSi2 are obtained. The MR effects were found small less than several %, negative at RT and positive at T=77 K for Fe-rich samples. For a sample at the stoichiometric beta-Fe-Si-2 on n-Si as a p-n junction, we found a positive MR as large as 30% at RT in B = 30 T. The physical mechanism of the large MR is tentatively given by the carrier freeze-out effect in between the p-n. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have used the magnetocaloric effect to investigate the new transition that was recently discovered in the Haldane-gap antiferromagnet Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) at H-c2 approximate to 14 T and at temperatures below 0.886 K. According to the specific-heat data in which this transition was observed in a magnetic field applied in the spin-chain direction, H,2 is nearly temperature-independent. Measured as a function of magnetic field, the variation of the sample temperature due to the magnetocaloric effect indicates that the transition at H,,2 is second order. It also shows that the magnetization of the new phase above H,2 decreases with increasing temperature, whereas it decreases with increasing temperature in the previously known, commensurate phase below H-c2. We propose the relevance of the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid or the weak in-plane anisotropy of Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) to the new phase.

We have performed high field magnetization and multi-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on single crystal and powder samples of Na2Fe2(C2O4)(3)(H2O)(2), abbreviated as SIO. The Fe2+ ions in SIO are bridged by oxalate groups to make two-leg ladders. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibilities parallel and perpendicular to the leg direction show very different and anisotropic behavior. Experimental results of the isomorphous compound Na2CO2(C2O4)(3)(H2O)(2) (SCO) are well explained by isolated magnetic dimers with an Ising-type anisotropy. Therefore, we analyze the frequency dependence of the ESR resonance fields by the same model with a fictitious spin 1 as in SCO. The agreement between experiment and calculation is satisfactorily good. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetization curves calculated with the same parameters obtained in the ESR analyses, however, do not agree well with the experimental ones. This indicates the presence of the exchange interaction between the dimers, namely the interaction along the leg.

Magnetic Susceptibility, magnetization and heat capacity measurements are made on a single crystal ;sample of a spin-ladder material, Na2Fe2(C2O4)(3)(H2O)(2). The susceptibilities show a broad maximum at a temperature of about 25 K and 20 K parallel (chi(vertical bar vertical bar)) and perpendicular (chi(perpendicular to)) to the ladder direction, respectively. The maximum value of chi(vertical bar vertical bar) is about three times larger than that of chi(perpendicular to). Both chi(vertical bar vertical bar) and X-perpendicular to decrease steeply at low temperatures down to about 5 K, at which chi(vertical bar vertical bar) shows an upturn. We find a broad peak in the temperature dependence of the heat capacity. Susceptibility, magnetization and heat capacity data are used to construct the magnetic field versus temperature phase diagram of this compound. Quantum fluctuations are not strong enough to form a singlet ground-state, probably due to the presence of Ising anisotropy. The actual ground state is expected to be close to the quantum critical-point between the spin-gapped and a Neel ordered phases with the help of the inter-ladder interaction.

Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements as a function of temperature on a single-crystal sample of a spin-ladder material, Na2Co2(C2O4)(3)(H2O)(2), are reported. Principal susceptibilities, parallel and perpendicular to the ladder direction, respectively, show broad maxima around 22 and 17 K. Both susceptibilities decay exponentially down to about 5 K and thereafter they are essentially independent of temperature. These findings amount to a signature of a quantum phase transition from a spin-liquid to Neel ordered state previously predicted theoretically. No anomaly is found in the heat capacity around the transition temperature.

Orbital and magnetic ordering in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 have been studied with resonant soft x-ray scattering at the Mn L-2,L-3 edges and for the first time azimuthal angle scans and polarization analysis are presented. The azimuthal angle dependencies are well described by the occurrence of a quadrupole (orbital) ordering below T-OO and an additional dipole (magnetic) contribution below T-N. There are no indications that there is an enhanced Jahn-Teller distortion at T-N as reported in a previous study. Subsequently, it is shown that there is simultaneous ferro- and antiferromagnetic ordering along the c-direction.

Neutron diffraction experiments performed on the Haldane gap material Ni(C5D14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) in high magnetic fields applied at an angle to the principal anisotropy axes reveal two consecutive field-induced phase transitions. The low-field phase is the gapped Haldane state, while at high fields the system exhibits a three-dimensional long-range Neel order. In a peculiar phase found in intermediate fields only half of all the spin chains participate in the long-range ordering, while the other half remain disordered and gapped.

Giant negative magnetoresistance (MR) up to 15% were observed for nano-scaled grains of Ni1-xMnx(0.23 < x < 0.3) in high fields up to 30 T. The crystal grain size (approximate to 5nm) was obtained by an adequate annealing condition of 630 K, 200hrs. The sample resistance decreased linearly with magnetization increases in each magnetization range for different x, and decreased with the same slope even for different x. The observed negative MR is plausibly explained by the scattering of carriers by the anti-parallel spin pairs of residual Mn-Mn clusters.

We have determined the magnetic phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) by specific heat measurements to 150 mK in temperature and 32 T in the magnetic field. When the field is applied along the spin-chain direction, a new phase appears at H(c2)approximate to14 T. For the previously known phases of field-induced order, an accurate determination is made of the power-law exponents of the ordering temperature near the zero-temperature critical field H-c, owing to the four-fold improvement of the minimum temperature over the previous work. The results are compared with the predictions based on the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet excitations. Substituting deuterium for hydrogen is found to slightly reduce the interchain exchange.

Orbital excitations have been sought in three systems, LaMnO3, KCuF3 andYTiO(3), using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering, with an energy resolution of 6 meV. Motivated by the recent Raman scattering result of Saitoh et al (2001 Nature 410 180), we measured the energy transfer spectra of LaMnO3 in the energy range up to 200 meV. We did not find any signal above background that could be associated with orbiton excitations. Since significant interaction between the spin and orbital degrees of freedom is expected in KCuF3 andYTiO(3), energy spectra were measured above and below the respective magnetic ordering temperature. We were not able to detect any change in the excitation spectra due to the magnetic ordering temperature of these materials. We discuss the implications of the experimental findings and estimate an upper bound on the orbiton x-ray cross-section.

We report the results of electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on single crystals of the spin 1 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) in the high-field phase. We observed ESR transitions from the ground state with a q=pi component above the critical field H-c. The experimental results are analyzed using the energy level scheme that is widely accepted for the spin 1 one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet below H-c. GMR and soft magnetic properties were investigated in nano-scale inhomogeneous Ni1-xMnx alloys (x = 0.20similar to0.30), where ordered single-domain particles are distributed in disordered nonmagnetic or Ni-rich or Mn-rich matrices. The GMR of Ni3Mn alloy depends on the volume fraction of ordered domains E:. Maximum value of -1.8% is obtained at epsilon similar to 0.2. Moreover, the GMR depends remarkably on x: GMR for 0.20 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.24 is small (Type I) and for 0.26 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.30 has a maximum of -6% at x = 0.30 (Type II). Types I and II are caused respectively by ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions between domains.

We have made magnetization measurements under pulsed magnetic fields on a S =1/2 kagome antiferromagnet [Cu-3(titmb)(2)(OCOCH3)(6)](.) H2O. A magnetization plateau with one-third of the saturation moment has been observed in a certain range of field sweep rates at 100 mK. This transient phenomenon of the magnetization is analyzed using an exact diagonalization method and found to be due to the meta-stable states originating from frustration. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The magnetization process of an S = 1/2 antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice, [Cu-3(titmb)(2)(OCOCH3)(6)] . H2O{titmb = 1, 3, 5-tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2.4.6 trimethyl-benzene}, has been measured at very low temperature's in both pulsed and steady fields. We have found a new dynamical behavior in the magnetization process. A plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization M-s appears in the pulsed-field experiments for intermediate sweep rates of the magnetic field and disappears in the steady-field experiment's. A theoretical analysis using exact diagonalization yields J(1) = 19+/-2 K and J(2) = 6+/-2 K. for the nearest-neighbor and second-nearest-neighbor interactions. respectively. This set of exchange parameters explains the very low saturation field and the absence of the plateau in the thermodynamic equilibrium as well as the two-peak feature in the magnetic heat. capacity observed by Honda et. al. (Z. Honda et al., J. Phys. Condens. Matter. 14 (2002) L625). Supported by numerical results we argue that a dynamical order by disorder phenomenon could explain the transient appearance of the M-s/3 plateau in pulsed-field experiments.

  • Formation of Eu2+ in SiO2-Al2O3 glass during thermal treatment in sol-gel process

JAPANESE JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS PART 2-LETTERS & EXPRESS LETTERS, Volume:43, Number:3A, First page:L372, Last page:L374, Mar. 2004
Although the Eu ion in a glass matrix is most stable in its trivalent form Eu3+, we found that a distinct blue photoluminescence (PL) from Eu2+ in Eu-doped SiO2-Al2O3 glasses was obtained without any deoxidizing treatments after a conventional sol-gel process. The incorporation of Al in a correct proportion to the concentration of Eu is essential for stabilizing Eu2+ during thermal treatment in the process. In order to understand the effect of the thermal treatment, we combined the result of thermal analysis with that of PL as a function of heating temperature. The PL spectral change from the defect-originated emission to the blue emission due to Eu2+ occurred at the temperature between 400degreesC and 600degreesC. An exothermic peak was observed at 450degreesC using our differential scanning calorimeter. We concluded that the reduction of Eu3+ and the stabilization of the resultant Eu2+ in the glass network takes place at the temperature around 450degreesC.

We report the results of elastic and inelastic neutron-scattering experiments on the Haldane-gap quantum antiferromagnet Ni(C5D14N2)(2)N-3(PF6) performed at mK temperatures in a wide range of magnetic field applied parallel to the S=1 spin chains. Even though this geometry is closest to an ideal axially symmetric configuration, the Haldane gap closes at the critical field H(c)similar or equal to4 T, but reopens again at higher fields. The field dependence of the two lowest magnon modes is experimentally studied and the results are compared with the predictions of several theoretical models. We conclude that of several existing theories, only the recently proposed model [Zheludev , cond-mat/0301424] is able to reproduce all the features observed experimentally for different field orientations.

As predicted by Haldane, spin, S = 1 one-dimensional (1D) Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF) has an energy gap between the singlet ground state and first excited triplet. On application of magnetic field, the triplet state Zeeman splits and the energy of one of the triplet state becomes zero at a critical field, H-c. Above H-c the system recovers magnetism. Then, we expect that a quasi-1D HAF will show a magnetic long-range ordering (LRO) at low temperatures due to the inter-chain coupling. This field-induced LRO has not been observed before due to complication of the-crystal structure in the materials studied so far and/or technical difficulty.
From a heat capacity measurement on a single crystal of an S = 1 quasi-Q1D HAF, Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6), we found an anomaly at a temperature in finite fields indicating a field-induced phase transition. A magnetic LRO is confirmed by a neutron diffraction measurement on the same sample. The temperature versus magnetic field phase diagram of this compound is constructed and discussed. A new spin S = 1/2 antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice, [Cu-3(titmb)(2) (OCOCH3)(6)].H2O (titmb = 1 3, 5-tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2, 4, 6 trimethylbenzene), has been grown and its magnetic properties have been studied. We have found for the first time a two-peak feature in the temperature dependence of the heat capacity. The higher-temperature peak is explained as due to a short-range magnetic ordering in two dimensions. We analysed the lower-temperature peak on the basis of an energy level scheme with a singlet ground state and a spin gap to the first excited triplet. The analysis reproduces the experiment fairly well, suggesting that the ground state is a disordered quantum liquid.
