Shortage of soil water content is a major threat to wetland vegetation's decline. The effects of watering using irrigation tubes on plant communities were investigated in the Tajimagahara flood plain, Saitama Prefecture, where the nature-reserve population of a threatened species, Primula sieboldii E.Morren, has persisted. The watering system was established in 2022. Since then, the growth patterns of P. sieboldii and several major dominant species were compared for three years between plots with and without watering. P. sieboldii had longer leaves and higher stature in plots with than without watering, but only in 2022. Euphorbia adenochlora C.Morren et Decne. had higher cover and stature in plots with watering for three years. E. adenochlora performed better in earlier seasons in later years. These indicate that continued watering enhanced the steady growth of E. adenochlora with the year, which would, in turn, mask the better growth of P. sieboldii observed in 2022.

In senior high school science "biology," theoretical learning is central, leading to issues such as decreased learning motivation and comprehension. To address these challenges, it is necessary to design learning that incorporates elements of technology education into high school biology. This study compared and analyzed the course of study for senior high school science and junior high school technology, clarifying the commonalities and differences in educational objectives and learning content. Additionally, it proposed a practical example of a senior high school science "biology" lesson that allows students to proactively explore and experience the connection between science and technology. The results revealed commonalities between senior high school "biology" and junior high school "Technology of Nurturing Living Things" in terms of deepening understanding of nature and living organisms, and emphasizing practical learning and the development of scientific thinking skills. On the other hand, while junior high school "Technology of Nurturing Living Things" aims to acquire basic knowledge and skills related to agricultural technology and environmental conservation, senior high school "biology" aims to build a foundation for specialized academic learning centered on the theoretical understanding of biology. In approaches to environmental issues, differences were also observed, with "Technology of Nurturing Living Things" aiming for practical solutions and senior high school "biology" aiming for the oretical solutions. The study suggests the possibility of realizing learning that combines practical skills and theoretical understanding by organically linking the characteristics of both learning areas.

Soil Systems, Volume:9, Number:2, First page:33, Last page:33, Apr. 2025, [Reviewed]
Water stress and nutrient stress are major limiting factors affecting crop productivity. Biochar-based organic fertilizers improve soil nutrient availability, water use efficiency (WUE), and crop yields under these adverse conditions. This study investigated the mechanistic effects of biochar–bokashi mixtures under a controlled glasshouse pot experiment on soil fertility, available nutrients, soil moisture, plant water use efficiency (PWUE), and wheat yield parameters under three moisture levels. Four treatments were included, (1) a control, (2) bokashi only, (3) 1% biochar + bokashi, and (4) 2% biochar + bokashi, under 30% (IR30), 50% (IR50), and 60% (IR60) field capacity, totaling twelve treatments in a completely randomized design with three replications. The combined bokashi–biochar application significantly (p < 0.05) improved growth parameters and yields, including plant height, number of fertile tillers (NFT), number of spikes (NS), spike length (SL), 1000-grain weight, biological yield (BY), root biomass, and grain yield (GY), compared to the control and bokashi-only treatments. Bokashi with 1% biochar exhibited superior agronomic performance over the other treatments, including 2% biochar. Biochar addition enhanced soil moisture and PWUE across irrigation levels. Bokashi–biochar treatments under IR30 outperformed the control and bokashi-only treatments under IR60, highlighting biochar’s effectiveness in alleviating water stress and increasing yields. Moreover, co-application significantly increased soil pH while enhancing the organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorous and exchangeable potassium nutrient levels, which positively correlated with yield. Bokashi–biochar mixtures have been proven to be an effective strategy to enhance soil fertility, increase soil moisture to alleviate water stress and support sustainable wheat production under water- and nutrient-limited conditions.

Addressing the challenge of reducing environmental pollution from agricultural practices by improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and water use efficiency (WUE) while ensuring high crop yields is essential for sustainable agriculture. Using a controlled glasshouse experiment, we evaluated the combined effects of biochar and bokashi under different irrigation regimes on NUE, WUE, and yield-related parameters in a wheat cropping system. The experiment followed a completely randomized design with three replications with four treatments: (1) control (C), (2) bokashi only (B0), (3) bokashi +1% biochar (B1), and (4) bokashi +2% biochar (B2). These treatments were evaluated at three irrigation levels—30% (IR30), 50% (IR50), and 60% (IR60) of field capacity (FC), resulting in a total of twelve treatments. Co-application of bokashi–biochar significantly (p < 0.050) improved grain yield (GY), straw yield (SY), total biomass (TB), total nitrogen uptake (TNU), grain protein content (GPC), NUE, and WUE, with the most notable benefits observed at 1% biochar application compared to C and B0 treatments. In addition, both types of treatment (bokashi and bokashi with biochar) and the level of irrigation had a significant impact on GY, SY, TB, TNU, GPC, NUE, and WUE. The B1 and B2 treatments further improved yield and efficiencies compared to bokashi alone. The positive correlation between grain yield and WUE underscores the importance of optimizing irrigation strategies alongside soil amendments for improved crop productivity. These enhancements in yield and efficiency are likely attributed to the increased soil fertility, nutrient availability, and water retention resulting from the combination of biochar and bokashi.

This study aimed to explore the effect of sustained application of plant-based compost on soil biological properties in a field where varying quantities of compost have been consistently applied since the inception of cultivation. The field is envisaged as an educational facility for elementary and junior high school students. Disparities in soil biological properties were examined across plots where different quantities of plant-based manure were consistently applied over a decade. Furthermore, the correlation among soil nutrients, carbon and nitrogen contents, and yield and quality of sweet potatoes cultivated under identical conditions in the same plots was established. The results revealed that excessive applications of fertilizer led to a decrease in the number and species of soil organisms and a tendency for an increase in the population of each species. The experimental plots with minimal continuous applications of compost exhibited higher biodiversity. Additionally, this plot produced sweet potatoes of superior quality. In plots where plant-based manure was consistently applied, a fertilizer application rate below the standard value proved suitable for sweet potato cultivation in the tenth year. Therefore, in plots with continuous applications of plant-based compost, a low amount of fertilizer could sustain soil organism diversity and enhance sweet potato quality.

This study investigates the differences in knowledge and experiences among students enrolled in agriculture programs at agricultural high schools. These differences likely stem from varying levels of exposure to agriculture and the natural world. The study seeks to gain insights into the current state of agricultural education in compulsory schooling and the perspectives of agricultural high school students. Interviews with technology education teachers from junior high and elementary schools revealed several challenges, including constraints in terms of class hours and suitable locations, evaluation difficulties, and issues related to plant management. Additionally, interviews with agricultural high school students highlighted their experiences, encompassing cultivation practices and class preferences. These encounters underline the importance of hands hands-on training and exposure on students’ values and preferences. Looking ahead, a more comprehensive exploration of the state of agricultural education is imperative. Furthermore, it is crucial for agricultural high schools to actively participate in compulsory agricultural education as a form of external support. Such engagement could help bridge the gap in agricultural learning and offer a more holistic educational journey for the students.

Junior high school students in technology education in Japan have long been instructed on crop cultivation as the technology of nurturing living things. However, the study of aquatic organism cultivation became compulsory in 2021, and researchers have not yet established an understanding of students’ conceptual readiness for this topic. For this study, researchers distributed a Google Forms survey to a group of junior high school students to determine their understanding of aquatic organism cultivation. In total, of the 1,064 junior high school students who responded, more than 70% had some experience of aquatic organism cultivation, while about 55% o responded in the negative. Only 20% of students knew the correct answer to a question about changes in the development of the aquaculture industry in the past 30 years. Also, the prosperity of the local industry had little impact on students’ motivation, although students with previous experience in keeping aquatic organisms were more motivated to learn about them.

In the subject of “nurturing living things” in the technology and home economics curricula, not only “cultivation of crops” and “cultivation of aquatic organisms” but also “animal keeping” are included. However, its content and systematic study guidance method has not been closely scrutinized for secondary students. This study aimed to construct a framework for the subject content around “animal keeping” from the perspective of “school subject content education.” Terminology associated with “animal keeping” was found in the existing literature from academic and educational fields. Consequently, its subject concepts were divided into four categories same as “crop cultivation” and “cultivation of aquatic organisms”: “primary production,” “secondary production,” “planning and evaluation” and “consumption and utilization.” Its mutual relationship between these subject concepts has been structured and a diagram made to illustrate the processes. On the other hand, it was shown as a difference with “crop cultivation” and “cultivation of aquatic organisms” that a lot of terms about “taxonomy and breeding” and “physiology and ecology” of animal were extracted.

Thinning is one of the important agricultural techniques to adjust the planting density, but few studies have showed for optimum timing of the thinning. In this study, we grew the radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. sativus) by planter in the air-conditioned room, and clarified the optimum timing of thinning. We set seven different conditions, such as presence or absence of thinning and different timing. The diameter, length, and fresh weight of radish root were compared among conditions. As a result, the following four points were clarified. (1) It is no significant difference in yield between the condition to thinning at the 90% coverage and the condition to thinning at earlier timing, which is carried out in customary cultivation. (2) When the thinning timing was delayed, the thickening growth was inhibited, and when it is further delayed, the rate of low-quality individual increased. (3) When the thinning was not done, each individual was remarkably suppresses hypertrophy of root. (4) Compared to the conditions that thinned out from densely planted condition, harvesting of large individuals can be expected compared to the condition that does not thin out by widening the sowing interval from the beginning.

Learning cultivation, taking care of crops and flowers, and being in touch with soil contributes to the healthy development of students. Although the “Technology of Living Things” is a compulsory part of secondary school technology education since 2012, the current situation wherein the gardens of many schools are in an undeveloped state, cannot be overlooked. Therefore, in this study, we assessed the present condition (i.e., the area and soil environment) of school gardens in elementary and secondary schools; then tasks were developed from the viewpoint of agronomy and pedagogy. We also interviewed teachers about the history of their school gardens. A field survey was carried out from March to October 2012 in Saitama Prefecture, and the location and soil condition of 56 school gardens were recorded. As a result, the school gardens were classified into four groups based on their total area (50 m2) and humus content rate (3%). A school garden of smaller area was not being used by a class in a secondary school. In addition, even if the total area exceeded 50 m2, the usage rate has remained only about 30% if the corresponding humus rate was low. On the other hand, about 60% of the school gardens with large area and high humus content rate were used, with the support of the local people.

From the standpoint of sustainable utilization of soil resources, systematic understanding of basic functions, properties and roles of soil is required. The purpose of this study is to clarify the dynamism of physical and chemical properties among five soils in relation to the growth of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Poir.). Sweet potato was cultivated by soil bag (capacity 20L) at Saitama University farm from August to November 2012. Five kinds of soils which was culture soil, red soil, normal black soil, hardened black soil by stepping on, and sandy soil, were prepared. The properties of each soil, growth amount and yield of sweet potato were compared during soil bag cultivation. As a result, the soil humus rate decreased in all soils from the planting time to the harvest time. The soil hardness was always the hardest in the hardened black soil, and it showed about twice the hardness of the sandy soil. However, as root of sweet potatoes grew, the soil hardness tended to soften in the hardened black soil. The yield in the cultivated soil was lower than that of black soil and red soil. Even if the planting time shifted to the high temperature phase in early August, it was shown that soil bag cultivation of sweet potatoes is possible, if it is black soil. Based on this result, we proposed cultivation learning to understand the dynamism of soil.

The study aimed to determine the most suitable light environment for cultivation of medicinal plants using plant bioelectric potential as an index. Perilla frutescens var. frutescens was selected as a medicinal plant, which is relatively easy to obtain, fast-growing, and easy to grow. In this study, three different light sources (A, B, and C) with varied light spectrum ratios, were used to cultivate P. frutescens var. frutescens. We compared the Von (difference between minimum and maximum bioelectric potential) among the light sources. P. frutescens var. frutescens was harvested 30 days after germination, and plant height, Base diameter, Number of leaves, fresh weight, and Raw weight of leaf were measured. Von for light source C was determined to be the largest. Plants cultivated under light source C demonstrated the maximum plant height and Raw weight of leaf. Light source C had a higher intensity at wavelengths of 450 nm compared with the other sources. However, wavelength region promoting growth of P. frutescens var. frutescens remains unidentified.

Animals have existed in close proximity to humans for a long time, and presently, their roles are diversified. They are consumed, considered family members, and employed in experiments. Therefore, present society cannot exist without animals. Consequently, in education, it is important to learn about the diverse roles of animals and how to involve them. Accordingly, it is imperative to organize and clearly classify the diverse roles of animals and formulate learning contents. In this paper, the literature was reviewed, the diversified roles of animals are organized, and classifications with advice from specialists were created. Animals were classified into domestic animals and wild animals. Furthermore, domestic animals were classified into livestock, companion animals, display animals, draft animals, and laboratory animals.

Journal of the Japanese Forest Society, Volume:102, Number:1, First page:56, Last page:68, Feb. 2020, [Reviewed]The purpose of this study was to propose teaching content on the subjects of forest science, forestry management, and usage of forest products in high schools according to the Ministry's official guidelines for school education in 1999, 2009 and 2018. We classified the contents of a technical book on forestry and forest products, and the areas of content from the viewpoint of the subject content studies of "the technology of nurturing living things" in technology education. We found a clear relationship between forests and societies and identified some overlap among the three subjects from 2009. The practice of forest science, the practice of forestry management, and the practice of usage of forest products were placed together as a session about problem-solving activities according to Ministry's 2018 guidelines. On the others hand, though nursery practices and breeding had been described in a chapter of the technical book and categorize according to the early stage of cultivation, they had been eliminated from the teaching content of forest science in 2018.

The study aimed to determine the most suitable light environment for cultivation of medicinal plants using plant bioelectric potential as an index. Perilla frutescens var. crispa was selected as a medicinal plant, which is relatively easy to obtain, fast-growing, and easy to grow. In this study, four different light sources (A, B, C, and D) with varied light spectrum ratios, were used to cultivate P. frutescens var. crispa. We compared the Von (difference between minimum and maximum bioelectric potential) among the light sources. P. frutescens var. crispa was harvested 30 days after germination, and plant height and fresh weight were measured. Von for light source B was determined to be the largest (80-90 mV). Plants cultivated under light source B demonstrated the maximum plant height and fresh weight. Light source B had a higher intensity at wavelengths of 450 and 660 nm compared with the other sources. However, wavelength region promoting growth of P. frutescens var. crispa remains unidentified.

The purpose of this study was to develop ESD and Environment Education in elementary schools. Under the subject of Living Environment Studies, we added recycling as a subject and taught students, with practical experience, about how raw compost was broken down using a simplified compost tool. The teaching session lasted two hours. In the first hour, the possibility of recycling garbage was discussed with the students. In the second hour, the students questioned whether garbage decomposed successfully and eventually became a part of the soil. Furthermore, they considered the quality of the soil post two weeks. Although most of the students knew what the word "recycling" meant, the results revealed that only a few could explain the process. After the class, the children understood well what recycling entailed and were highly in favor of the idea of recycling waste.

Water Science, Volume:64, Number:1, First page:138, Last page:152, 2020, [Reviewed]This study proposes an experimental class on the water holding capacity of forest using a handmade and low-cost sprinkling instrument detecting Hortonian overland flow proposed by Kuraji and Hoyano (2014), which can be operated by junior and senior high school students, The low-cost sprinkling instrument consists of three plastic garden stakes, an iron flower pot holder, a two liter plastic bottle with a hole in the bottom, and a shower nozzle placed on the plastic bottle, These goods can be bought at a "100-yen shop"(a dollar store). Using the proposed instrument, students examined (three times) whether Hortonian overland flow occurred at forest plantations in their high school and in their junior high school's forest, grassland and bare grounds, These experimental classes were conducted in 2017 and 2018. In the first experiment in the forest, no flow or a little flow was observed. A leaf was hit against the shower flow in the second experiment to reproduce a raindrop in the crowded forest. Consequently, a large drop of water was produced Hortonian flow in the ground. In the school grounds, a sizeable Hortonian flow was observed in the first experiment. Consequently, students could consider a relationship between water holding capacity and the rainfall in a forest plantation and a bare field.

Human societies from different corners of the world cannot be maintained without the use of animals for various purposes, such as for food, clothing, companionship, and therapy. From an educational viewpoint, this diverse relationship between humans and animals must be studied. Therefore, this study reviewed textbooks used in elementary and secondary schools of Saitama City, and examined the idea of animals owned by ordinary students. The results revealed that, in the textbooks, there were 16 specific phrases regarding animals, in particular growing, physiology and ecology, and categorization. Cluster analysis showed similar descriptions of animals among the subjects.

Journal of the Japan Society of Technology Education, Volume:61, Number:3, First page:195, Last page:202, 2019, [Reviewed]Teaching contents regarding the harvesting of forest trees were investigated; teaching materials in technology education for agriculture and forestry were examined for their effectiveness based on high school agricultural department textbooks and field surveys related to the harvesting wood products. Furthermore, practice lessons were attempted based on the extracted teaching contents. The results showed that the teaching contents for forest tree harvesting included seven steps from logging to shipment; these steps represent the production of wood in a narrow sense. Regarding teaching practices concerning the harvesting of forest trees, guidance was conducted according to the extracted teaching contents; additionally, a comparison with the process of harvesting rice was made. Students also studied carbon fixation, which is advanced by appropriate afforestation and wood utilization. From the results of the questionnaire survey on the effectiveness of the practice lessons, it was not only found that students recognized the importance of crop cultivation, mainly for food production, but they also gained a wider understanding of the importance of material production based on wood utilization. To this end, guidance and systematic instruction about the harvesting of forests along the extension line of the cultivation of crops was helpful.

One of the environmental issues caused by rapid modern urbanization is the division of habitats of living organisms and loss of biodiversity due to increasing urban population. The invasion of alien species in the urban areas is believed to spur these problems. The present study aimed to obtain basic information for the preparation of nature's experience learning program in a secondary forest located in the suburbs of a city. We conducted a plant investigation focusing on the distribution and ecology of alien species to prepare teaching materials from an educational perspective. A field survey was conducted between August 2012 and October 2013 at the Okubo Second Firm, Faculty of Educations, Saitama University. We conducted a survey of flora and vegetation in the forest and recorded 104 plant species, including 16 alien species, and vegetation of seven types based on the plant sociological method. CCA revealed the relationship between species component and environmental data, such as height of the tree, number of species, D', H', soil hardness, soil moisture, and SOC. Based on our experience, we suggest the establishment of a learning program to determine the distribution of 3 alien species, Sicyos angulatus L., Solidago altissima L., and Robinia pseudoacacia L., and gain further knowledge about them.

In elementary school science, cultivation activities using plants are carried out today. However, few initiatives aim at nurturing the applied ability to purposefully grow plants. Furthermore, technology education in junior high school does not devote enough time to teaching about Nurturing Living Things. To clarify the current situation and problems in Life in elementary school science and Nurturing Living Things in junior high school, we investigated previous research on the content of both areas. We suggested that it is necessary to involve elements of technology education in Life in elementary school science. Accordingly, systematic learning between Life in elementary school science and Nurturing Living Things in junior high school will be established. Furthermore, elementary school students will be able to learn about plant products with technology literacy and junior high school students will be enabled to explore their ideas of exploring technology more in-depth.

日本海域研究, Number:49, First page:11, Last page:21, 2018, [Reviewed]
The Noto Peninsula, situated in an intermediate-temperate forest region in the north of Japan, was designated as an area containing .. Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)" by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAQ) of the United Nations (UN) in 2011. Nonetheless, despite this status, artificial forests on the peninsula are being abandoned and suffer from poor undergrowth vegetation. Therefore there are concerns that the forests are losing their original functions such as the development of water catchment areas and the prevention of surface soil erosion. In order to make a contribution to sustainable artificial forestry management, this study aimed to clarify the relationship between undergrowth vegetation and the topography in the artificial forests of the Noto Peninsula. Undergrowth vegetation was investigated using phytosociological methods in 27 randomly set 100m2 quadrats in September and October 2015. As a result, the undergrowth vegetation in an artificial forest of the Noto Peninsula was classified into three vegetation types: (I) a high-altitude area type, (2) a low-altitude area in the peninsula's northern outer region (.. sotoura") type, and (3) a low-altitude area in the peninsula's southern inner region (.. uchiura") type. The differences in species composition between the vegetation types is mainly defined by the sea level, secondary to have been located at a position facing the seaside.

The "cultivation of aquatic organisms" topic from the "nurturing living things" subject of the "technology and home economics" course has very little teaching materials available. This is because its systematic study guidance method has been not considered in detail. Hence, this study aimed to develop the teaching materials for the above-mentioned topic by focusing on goldfish (Garassius auratus) cultivation. To effectively develop the teaching materials, we actually cultivated goldfish and devised a method for developing fisheries in high school. We further interviewed a specialist in the field and evaluated the problems involved in cultivating goldfish and the educational effects that this cultivation has on students. On the one hand, goldfish cultivation as teaching material showed the following advantages based on the physiological and ecological characteristics of goldfish: (1) they are easy to handle, (2) they have high resistance to diseases, and (3) feeding them immediately after they hatch directly influences their survival rate. On the other hand, the following disadvantages were revealed: (1) lack of clear criteria to evaluate the gold fish based on appearance and (2) managing the goldfish during summer vacation as students are away from school during this time. Further, the teaching material also evaluated the effect of different cultivation densities on the individual size and body color of the goldfish.

Although experience activities of cultivation learning have been carried out in elementary schools, the technology and home economics curricula in junior high schools have not organized the learning contents with the aim of "nurturing living things." This study attempted to create student readiness for cultivation learning in elementary school by analyzing 54 elementary school textbooks for nine subjects from an elementary school in Saitama city. The results showed that the subjects of life environment studies and science contain the largest description of cultivated plants from the viewpoint of knowledge and skill, while home economics and social studies described their production and distribution with high frequency. Moreover, to improve the students' learning motivation and interests, cultivating plants should be taught across the subjects.

The subject of "nurturing living things" in the technology and home economics curricula was made compulsory for students in junior high schools. Although activities that allow the experience of nurturing plants have been carried out in elementary schools to develop student readiness to nurture living things, they have not been organized with the inclusion of cultivation learning in junior high schools. To grasp the current conditions of plant nurturing in elementary schools, a questionnaire was distributed to elementary school teachers in Saitama Prefecture. The results showed that more than 50% of teachers felt uneasy about teaching this subject due to current problems surrounding the learning of plant nurturing. In particular, inadequate preparation time and a lack of a specialized knowledge of cultivation, including such topics as replant failure or healthy soil, were shown to be significant problems for teachers.

The forest of the seasonal floodplain of Lake Tonle Sap, Cambodia, the largest fresh water lake in South East Asia, is dominated by Barringtonia actangula Korth (Lytheraceae). However, the widespread invasion of the introduced shrub Mimosa pigra L. (Legminosae) in areas affected by severe human impact, including burning off, is having serious implications for local flora. In this study, the processes of revegetation by M. pigra from establishment until dominance, were surveyed in an open area (ca. 0.7ha) from which the aerial parts of plants had been burnt off four times (before and after flooding) over a 21 month period. Vegetation was investigated by phytosociological methods in 50 randomly set 1m^2 quadrats and RPPFD calculated from a hemispherical photo taken 50cm above the center of each quadrat. The revegetation process was as follows: (1) one week after burning, Merremia hederacea Hallier f. (Cuculbitaceae), a pioneer species with herb climber, widely established, (2)1.9 months after burning, M. hederacea widespread (41.7% coverage of quadrats), scattered M pigra and B. acutangla in low densities, (3)14.5 months after burning (fo1lowing initial flooding), M. pigra regenerated primarily from sprouts growing more quickly than other species, dominant with high coverage (64.2%) and height (2.1m), (4)21.9 months after burning (fo1lowing second flooding), M. pigra dominance increased, with greater coverage (90.2%) and height (2.9m), other species covered completely. In the early stages of revegetation following burning on the Lake Tonle Sap floodplain, the recovery ability of M. pigra was clearly greater than that of B. acutangula, a dominant species in the region.

Although the tropical floodplain still had rich biodiversity, not only was its degradation remarkable, but also inventory of such was not keeping pace with the rate of disappearance of plant resources. Accordingly, it is imperative that the ecological situation is clarified and a proposal for sustainable plant resource management put forward. In this paper, we outlined the mechanisms characterizing the plant ecosystem and estimated the influence of human impact on the Lake Tonle Sap floodplain. Findings included: (1) the ecosystem of the region was discriminated into two zones at the landscape level, with seven vegetation types classified, and (2) vegetation type formation was strongly influenced by seasonal water-level changes and differences in the use of plant resources (mainly firewood) according to the lifestyles of local inhabitants.

The early stages of vegetation recovery were studied on a degraded lowland peat-swamp in Narathiwat Province, southeastern Thailand. Vegetation censuses were carried out nine times over a six-year period following a severe fire. 50 1m2 quadrats (15 for the first census) were established, and the phytosociological vegetation profile for each quadrat was surveyed each year. Also, the population structure of Melaleuca cajuputi Powell (density, maximum height and maturity) was investigated. The results showed that vegetation height and coverage expanded rapidly, but the total number of species increased slowly. M. cajuputi seedlings emerged about three months after the seed rain that occurred at the time of the fire. By a year and a half later these trees had built up a dense canopy and started sexual reproduction. These results show that vegetation recovery was induced primarily by the vigorous growth of the M. cajuputi population in the study site.

Lake Tonle Sap, the largest lake in Southeast Asia, has been closely associated with the lives and culture of Cambodian people and society. A great amount of aquatic resources arising from its high biodiversity has supported them since the Khmer Dynastic Time to the present. However, because problems of environmental pollution, and atmospheric pollution in particular, have become worse within a short space of time in Cambodia due to rapid development of tourism of the Angkor Monument Complex for instance, its harmful effect to the natural environment has been of recent concern. Rapid deterioration of the natural environment will probably trigger a certain change of the lake ecosystem, and the change might lead to a fatal damage to the plentiful aquatic resources. The present article describes the preliminary results of the research missions “Evaluation of Mechanisms Sustaining the Biodiversity in Lake Tonle Sap” from 2003 to 2005. On the basis of these results loss and damage of the natural environment and biodiversity of the lake are estimated, along with the progress of atmospheric pollution.

The botanical garden at the Institute of Nature and Environmental Technology at Kanazawa University, has a fresh-water reservoir. Several endangered species such as Hydrocharis dubia have been identified in this reservoir. Flora and vegetation surveys were carried out from October 2021 to May 2022. As a result, 53 vascular plants were described, including 7 which were designated as endangered species in Ishikawa Prefecture. More than half of the water surface of the reservoir was covered with floating-leaf plants (H. dubia), and the presence of submerged plants such as Hydrilla verticillata and Ceratophyllum demersum was confirmed under the water surface. Moreover, some invasive alien species such as Solidago altissima were observed in places where soil was deposited.

Lake Tonle Sap in Cambodia is well known as its distinct seasonal changes and the world's highest level of freshwater biodiversity. However, its natural environment has drastically changed due to the recent socio-economic development of Cambodia, the ecosystem is facing danger of destruction. Referring to the results of the comprehensive biodiversity evaluation research of the lake carried out from 2000 to 2006, the current status of biological communities and environmental conditions were clarified in this research, and analysed their changes quantitatively over the 12 years.
As a result, although no significant change was detected in the sediments, hydrological conditions and benthic animal fauna of the lake, it was revealed that the progress of the lake eutrophication was clear on the basis of the results of the phytoplankton flora and primary production of the lake water. Further, the spread of alien plants and the settlement of alien fish were identified in and around the lake.

This study reports on an experimental class on water holding capacity in forestry, involving the use of a handmade and low-cost sprinkling instrument by high school forestry science classes and junior high scool science classes to detect Hortonian overland flow, as proposed by Tanaka and Kuraji (2016). The low-cost sprinkling instrument consists of three plastic garden stakes, an iron flower-pot holder, a two-liter plastic bottle with a hole in the bottom, and a shower nozzle attached to the plastic bottle-goods can be bought at “100-yen shops” (a dollar store). Using the proposed instrument, students examined thrice whether Hortonian overland flow occurred at the forest plantations at school. These experimental classes were conducted in 2017 and 2018 in Kimitsu City, and in 2018 in Matsusaka City. Thus, the students could consider the relationship between water-holding capacity and rainfall in a forest plantation.

The purpose of this study was to propose teaching contents considering the commonality in each living from the viewpoint of subject content studies of “technology of nurturing living things” in technology education. We examined the relevance of the basic framework concerning "nurturing living things" using the ISM structural method and created seven concept groups. Framework of teaching contents were constructed by relating the concept groups with the learning process of the technology education. Proposed teaching contents of “crop cultivation”, “aquatic organisms cultivation”, “animal breeding”, and “forestry tree cultivation” could recognize and grasped for teachers as the common teaching contents based on the concept and framework by "nurturing living things".

This study proposes to examine the content of instruction in forestry education that addresses technology for nurturing living things, in the context of junior high school technology education. Specifically, the study considers instruction materials about afforestation technology in textbooks. They are also compared to materials presented in the textbook of forestry education at the high school level. A stepwise model of processes related to afforestation can be enumerated as follows: 1)the preparatory step, where the forest grows; and the stages of 2)producing; 3)raising; and 4)harvesting the forest.
Also, junior high school forestry classes carried out forest measurements, thinning, three-dimensional forest stand structures, and local yield table simulations using personal computers. The computer simulation was observed to be capable of operation and useful for the understanding forest stand structures and the simulation of the local yield table.

The subject of “nurturing living things” in the technology and home economics curricula was made compulsory for students in junior high schools. However, due to constraints in implementation of the program and lack of teaching time, they have not been introduced smoothly. To help overcome the lack of a standardized approach to teaching the cultivation learning, a questionnaire was distributed to junior high school teachers in Saitama Prefecture. Although, the results indicated that teachers hoped for growth sentiment and continuous management ability among their students for growing and caring for plants, more than 50% of respondents felt uneasy about teaching the content due to their own lack of experience. Current problems included lack of time, space and materials, lack of teaching instructions, practical obstacles to growing plants, and inadequate background knowledge of and information for teachers.
