    In this study, we developed a novel vacuum deposition process for organic thin films that harnesses precursor phases, such as liquid crystal and amorphous states, to achieve large crystalline domains and high-performance transistors. Furthermore, we made the first resistive switching memory device utilizing liquid crystal electrolyte thin films, successfully realizing low voltage and stable operation. These findings not only advance high-performance organic electronics but also pave the way for new functional material thin films and integration technologies based on this process.

    The performance of halide-based organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells is significantly influenced by the perovskite crystal structure. In this study, we investigated the crystal growth process during coating and drying using in situ X-ray diffraction analysis. In particular, using synchrotron radiation, we measured the process from coating by the blade method to drying by the gas-blow method, and further to crystal transformation induced by substrate heating, with high temporal resolution, thereby clarifying the behavior of crystal structure and orientation. It was confirmed that precursor crystals oriented toward the substrate are formed, and this was identified as the key factor for the formation of uniform and flat perovskite crystals. Additionally, it was revealed that the activation energy for the conversion to perovskite crystals is lower when the precursor crystals are oriented compared to when they are randomly oriented.

    Perovskite solar cells are expected to be the next generation of solar cells due to their high Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 25% and low fabrication cost, but their low durability is big problem for practical usage. The main reason of low durability is the decomposition of perovskite crystals by water and oxygen entering through pinholes in the organic layer. To solve this problem, it is necessary to replace the organic materials with inorganic materials that have high atmospheric stability and became high quality films without pinholes. In this study, we investigated a-Si film fabricated using catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CatCVD), which generates no plasma and causes no damage during film formation.

    We investigated the crystal growth dynamics of lead-free perovskite by in-situ infrared MAIRS method, and the crystal growth control and device development of lead-halide perovskite using epitaxial growth. In the crystal growth dynamics analysis, SnI2 and guanidinium iodide (GAI) were used as starting materials, and the dynamics of formation of perovskite (GASnI3) was analyzed. As for crystal growth control, we found that highly crystalline perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) is formed on highly crystalline pentacene/rubrene layered thin films.

    Crystalline Si, which is the main player in the current solar cell market, can dramatically improve the conversion efficiency by integrating with different materials. We have been developing the fabrication technology of crystalline Si solar cells, perovskite solar cells, and smart stack, a technology to bond different types of solar cell using metal nanoparticle arrays. We therefore started to develop smart stack-based perovskite/crystalline Si tandem solar cells to realize both high efficiency and low cost. As a first step, this study focused on finding optimal conditions for smart stack to realize good tandem structures and characteristics.

    For the further development of the efficiency of perovskite solar cells, we focused on the crystallization control of organolead-halide perovskite. We attempted the growth of perovskite on the single crystal rubrene, which is typical organic semiconducting materials. We succeeded in the construction of epitaxial perovskite film with high crystallinity and atomically ordered morphology. Next, the system to conduct real-time X-ray diffraction measurement was constructed. The real-time analysis of crystallization process of organolead-halide perovskite was conducted and some feature for the crystallization dynamics are successfully obtained.

    Time-resolved electric-field-induced sum-frequency generation (EFI-SFG) spectroscopy was employed to study the charge behavior of multilayer organic devices including organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Through application of the square wave pulse bias to the OLEDs, compensation of the polarization charges in the electron transport layer, and the generation of the NPD cation was observed. When the pulse voltage was turned off, the NPD cation immediately disappeared, confirming that charge recombination occurs at the interfaces. We could therefore conclude that time-resolved EFI-SFG is a useful technique to probe the carrier behavior at the buried interfaces of organic devices as well as to identify the origin of the charge carriers in OLEDs, which are essentially inaccessible by other techniques.
