Abstract
This study examines several non-local curvature flows for plane curves with general rotation number. The flows investigated here are the area-preserving flow, the length-preserving flow, and the gradient flow of isoperimetric deficit. In a previous study, sufficient conditions for finite-time blow-up have been presented, and an upper bound for the blow-up time have been proposed. Here, we give estimates for solutions including at least two important applications. First, a lower bound for the blow-up time for the blow-up solutions is derived. Second, our estimate improves the blow-up rate of the blow-up solutions.

The Mobius energy is an example of a knot energy, so-called since it is invariant under Mobius transformations. It has been shown that it is defined on the fractional Sobolev space H-3/2 boolean AND W-1,W-infinity, where it can be decomposed into three parts, each of which retains the Mobius invariance. These results hold not only for knots in three-dimensional Euclidean space but also for closed curves embedded in n-dimensional Euclidean space. It has already been obtained that the variational formulae of the decomposed energies for both curves and their variations are in the same fractional Sobolev space. Aformal integration by parts implies that the formulae extend to linear forms for variationals in L-2 if the curve is in H-3. Such a linear form is called the L-2-gradient. In this paper, we confirm this expectation, and give an explicit expression of the L-2-gradient for the decomposed Mobius energies including all lower-order terms.

It is well known that one of O'Hara's knot energies is called the Mobius energy because of its invariance under Mobius transformations. We showed in a previous paper that the Mobius energy can be decomposed into three parts that retain invariance but we left open the question of invariance regarding inversions with respect to spheres centered on a knot. Here, we answer this question under the assumption that the knots have extra regularity. The result holds not only for knots but also for closed curves in R-n.

It was shown in a preceding paper that the Mobius energy can be decomposed into three parts and the Mobius invariance of each part was investigated. In this paper, we provide analytic application of our decomposition. Variational formulae of the Mobius energy have already been obtained by several mathematicians through quite involved calculations. Explicit expressions and estimates of variational formulae can be derived relatively easily by utilizing our decomposition.

We prove that for a given continuous function H(s), (-infinity < s < infinity), there exists a globally defined generating curve of a rotational hypersurface in a Euclidean space such that the mean curvature is H(s). We also prove a similar theorem for generalized rotational hypersurfaces of O(l+1) x O(m+1)-type. The key lemmas in this paper show the existence of solutions for singular initial value problems of ordinary differential equations satisfied using generating curves of those hypersurfaces.

The Möbius energy, defined for closed curves embedded in Rn, is decomposed into three parts. It is called the Möbius energy since it is invariant under Möbius transformations. An alternative proof of the Möbius invariance is given using the decomposition. Furthermore the invariance of each part of decomposition is discussed.

The gradient flow associated to the Helfrich variational problem, called the Helfrich flow is considered. Here the n-dimensional Helfrich flow is investigated for any n, as a projected gradient flow. A result of local existence is proved. The uniqueness is shown for the cases (i) for the initial hypersurface with non-zero Gramian when n >= 2, (ii) for every initial curve when n = 1.

We show that bounded solutions of an initial(-boundary) value problem for certain semilinear heat equations always come from the corresponding ordinary differential equations. As a consequence we immediately get a theorem of Kneser's type which was showed by Ballotti and Kikuchi in different methods.

Weak solutions to a strongly damped semilinear hyperbolic system are constructed by the method of semi-descretization in time variable combining with variational calculus. The first initial‐boundary value problem and the free boundary of Stefan's type for a certain class of non‐linear diffusion equations which arises in plasma physics are considered. This chapter discusses the one-dimensional free boundary problem for the heat-conductive compressible viscous gas. It considers that the one-dimensional motion of the fluid, which satisfies the equations of state of the polytropic ideal gas, with the prescribed stress on the boundary and with adiabatic ends. By use of the Eulerian coordinate system, the motion of the gas is described as the free boundary problem by the following three equations corresponding to the conservation laws of the mass, moment and energy. It mainly discusses the large-time behavior of solution. This chapter aims to show that the global solution converges to the state when P (t) does to the positive constant P for arbitrary initial data. © 1989 Publishing Commitee of Lecture Notes in Numerical and Applied Analysis

Global asymptotics on the outer pressure problem of free type is discussed. The solution of the problem exists globally (Theorem 1), and some global asymptotics are investigated (Theorem 2). Under some additional assumptions, the solution converges to a stationary state (Theorem 3) with exponential rate (Theorem 4). © 1988 JJAM Publishing Committee.

In this paper the existence of the global solution of the outer pressure problem of the one-dimensional polytropic ideal gas is proved (Theorem 1). The gradient flow of bending energy for plane curve is studied. The flow is considered under two kinds of constraints; one is under the area and total-length constraints; the other is under the area and local-length constraints. The fundamental results (the local existence and uniqueness) were obtained independently by Kurihara and the second author for the former one; by Okabe for the later one. For the former one the global existence was shown for any smooth initial curves, but the asymptotic behavior has not been studied. For the later one, the global existence was guaranteed for only curves with the rotation number one, and the behavior was well studied. It is desirable to compensate the results with each other. In this note, it is proposed how to unify the two flows.

The Helfrich variational problem is the minimizing problem of the bending energy among closed surface with prescribed area and enclosed volume. This is one of the models for shape transformation theory of human red blood cells. Here the associated gradient flow, called the Helfrich flow, is studied. The existence of this geometric flow is proved locally for arbitrary initial data, and globally near spheres. Furthermore its center manifold near spheres is investigated.

Considered is a variational problem for the bending energy of closed surfaces under the prescribed area and surrounding volume. Minimizers of this problem are interpreted as surfaces modeling the shape of red blood cells. We give a rigorous proof of the existence of a one-parameter family of critical points bifurcating from the sphere and study their stability/instability. In particular, for a few branches of critical points, we compute the exact values of the index and the nullity of critical points.

In the preceding paper weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations have been constructed for which a shaper energy inequality is satisfied. The inequality contains a supplementary term which measures the size of singularity in time variable. In this paper we prove that these weak solutions satisfy a new energy identity if the supplementary term vanishes.

In this paper, the blow-up of solutions of ordinary differential equations, which are deduced from the equation of equivariant harmonic maps, is studied. Its direct consequence is the non-existence or existence result of equivariant harmonic maps between warped product manifolds. As another application we prove the non-existence of a harmonic map from an Euclidean space to a Hadamard manifold with a certain nondegeneracy condition at infinity, provided sectional curvatures of the Hadamard manifold an bounded from above by a slowly decaying negative function of the distance from a fixed point.
