Purpose
Despite the large number of Indonesian health-care workers working as migrant care workers in Japan, there is a lack of studies that have investigated this phenomenon or assessed the working conditions of Indonesian care workers working in Japanese aged-care facilities. This study aims to explore the work experiences of Indonesian care workers in Japan.
Design/methodology/approach
A qualitative descriptive research design was used, and a purposive sample of 18 Indonesian health-care workers (12 nurses and six midwives) who work as care workers in Japan participated in this study. Semistructured interviews were conducted with these participants between December 2022 and January 2023. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist was used to report this study.
Findings
Four key themes emerged from the data: easy but mentally challenging, being a care worker is a blessing, working in a partially Muslim-friendly environment and enjoy living: prefer to stay longer.
Originality/value
The work experiences of Indonesian care workers in Japan are complex and multifaceted. By understanding their experiences and needs, the authors can work toward creating more inclusive and supportive workplaces for all.

This article empirically investigates the migration patterns of Indian nurses who have returned from Gulf countries, where obtaining long-term visas and citizenship is difficult, to determine whether their return should be considered a temporary or permanent settlement. The study addresses the likelihood of future migration and explores migration trajectories among these individuals. Our analysis reveals that returned nurses are more inclined to migrate again if currently employed in India’s private sector, which offers lower financial rewards compared to the public sector. On the other hand, those in contract-based public sector jobs express a willingness to relocate to Western countries but not back to Gulf countries. The limited occurrence of circular migrations to Gulf countries among nurses highlights their lower position in the hierarchy of destination countries. This study illustrates the complexities of nurse migration decisions, demonstrating that migration trajectories do not always follow a linear path towards perceived ‘better’ destinations.

Background: The transition process of migration to work abroad can be challenging and, depending on how it is handled, can impact the job satisfaction level of these foreign-educated nurses. A clear understanding of migrant nurses’ job satisfaction is critical for effective translation of nursing practice across the health systems and cultures.
Objective: This study examined the job satisfaction of the foreign-educated nurses in Malaysia, which includes the job satisfaction dimensions and the significant difference between sociodemographic status and job satisfaction.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 102 foreign-educated nurses working in private hospitals, clinics, hemodialysis centers, nursing homes, and private homes in Malaysia was conducted from September 2017 to March 2018. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U, and Kruskal Wallis tests were used to analyze the data.
Results: The study revealed that the participants had a median satisfaction score of 22 (IQR = 19 to 24). Serving the sick and needy and participants’ self-respect were the highest satisfaction dimensions among the participants (Median = 3, IQR = 3 to 3). Moreover, the job satisfaction was significantly higher for registered foreign-educated nurses (mean rank = 62.5) than for unregistered foreign-educated nurses(mean rank = 48.65) when working in other countries (p = 0.02). Indian nurses (mean rank = 60.36) also expressed higher satisfaction in terms of working in other countries than Filipino nurses (mean rank = 46.88; p = 0.02). In addition, positive relationships with colleagues and superiors led to higher satisfaction among Indian nurses (mean rank = 61.02) than among Filipino nurses (mean rank = 47.24; p = 0.04). The job satisfaction of male foreign-educated nurses was significantly higher than their female counterparts in terms of self-respect, relationship with fellow nurses and superiors, working in other countries, career development, and ease of finding employment (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The overall job satisfaction among the foreign-educated nurses in Malaysia is high, mainly when serving the sick and needy, and their degree of self-respect. Understanding job satisfaction among foreign-educated nurses in Malaysia enables the management team to develop effective strategies for addressing nursing shortages and improving the quality of patient care.

本研究は、主要な看護師送り出し国であるインドからの看護師の国際労働移動が、インド国内での最低賃金制度の導入後にどのように変化したのかを分析することを目的とする。インドにおける先行研究では、給与水準がはるかに低い私立病院勤務の看護師の間で国際労働移動への強い選好がみられることが指摘される。しかし、2018年、私立病院に州政府の定める最低賃金を看護師に支払うことが義務づけられた。本研究では、最低賃金制度の導入という労働条件の変化が国際労働移動にどのように影響したのかを、2016～17年に調査した看護師の追跡調査より検証する。これにより、インドの医療分野における重要な政策課題である看護師不足への政策含意を導くことも目指す。
2020年度、2021年度と新型コロナの影響でインドに渡航できなかったため、調査票を用いた調査を対面式からオンラインに切り替えた。本調査はコロナ禍での医療を最前線で支える看護師を対象としているため調査に時間を要しているが、調査そのものは進んでいる。
2021年度の成果として、インド人看護師の海外渡航先での職務満足度に関する論文がジャーナルに発表された。その他の共著論文3本が次年度に洋書（海外出版社）のチャプターとして出版される予定である。

本研究の目的は、インドにおいて都市低経済階層の教育と貧困の関係を分析することである。具体的には、研究代表者が2007～08年、2012年に実施した首都デリーのスラム世帯を再調査し、教育や所得や消費で計測される貧困に与えた影響と貧困が次世代協に与えた影響を検証する。これらの分析において、5年前、10年前と比較して教育と貧困の関係の変容（あるいは変容のない）過程やその要因について明らかにし、都市貧困層が低教育と貧困の負のサイクルから脱出する可能性について、新たな視点を提供するものである。
第1回調査(2007－08年）で対象となった50スラム417世帯のうち、第2回調査(2012年）では46スラム297世帯を追跡することができた。あわせて新たに追加調査を行った世帯を含めて合計50世帯417世帯となった。今回の調査では第2回調査の対象世帯を追跡し、324世帯を追跡することができた。これにより、第1回調査から継続できた世帯は、44スラム215世帯となった。前回調査時からの変化として、スラム人口の増加、住民の投資による住環境の改善、スラム内部道路の舗装化、トイレの増加、近隣学校の増加などが観察されている。これらの変化を考慮して今後分析を進める。

各自がそれぞれの調査研究を継続した。特に大きな進展のあったものは３点である。第１に、タミルナードゥ州マドライ県のため池灌漑地域にある大きな調査村の世帯悉皆調査（約1000世帯）を完了したこと、第２に、マハーラーシュトラ州で１つの村の世帯悉皆調査を実施し、分析したこと、第３に、パンジャーブ州で発展する土地貸借市場で決まる地代水準に大きな地域差があることを考慮し、異なる地域の48ヵ村で地代決定要因を探る調査を実施したことである。
さらに、５年計画の３年目に当たったため、中間的とりまとめを行った。具体的には、12月22日と23日の２日間にわたり、海外から３名の研究者を招聘して、京都大学にて「中間ワークショップ」を開催し、英語で合計８本の発表とそれに対する討議を行った。さらに年度末には、中間ワークショップで発表されたペーパーをもとに、ワーキング・ペーパーを６本刊行した。インドの地域別にみると、パンジャーブ州１本、グジャラート州１本、マハーラーシュトラ州１本、タミルナードゥ州２本、ビハール州１本である。出版元は、研究代表者（藤田）が総括代表を務めている人間文化研究機構「南アジア地域研究」プロジェクトのワーキング・ペーパー・シリーズのNo.20～25であり、ホームページにもアップされた。
ちなみに、まだ中間成果がワーキング・ペーパーの刊行物の形になっておらず、今後の刊行が期待される地域は、バングラデシュ１本、インドのビハール州１本、タミルナードゥ州２本、オディシャ州１本、パンジャーブ州１本などである。
また、中間ワークショップでは、各研究分担者や協力者の中間成果報告をもとに、今後２年間でやるべき、残された課題についても議論をした。

本研究は、近年インドで急増する国内労働移動が農村の労働市場に与えた短中期的な影響を検証しつつ、マクロレベルでの地域、階層間格差拡大のメカニズムを労働移動という視点から分析した。分析対象は、インドの最貧困州であり、季節労働移動車の最大の送り出し州であるビハール州農村である。家計調査とフォーカス・グループ・ディスカッションから、経済階層と州外の雇用・労働条件や賃金に関係がみられること、また、男性の労働移動の増加が農村労働市場の賃金や女性の農業労働の与えた影響は大きくないことを示した。

本研究は、高い経済成長と貧困削減のスピードの鈍化する傾向のみられるインドにおいて2007/08年に調査した首都デリーのスラム家計を2012年に再調査することにより、生活水準の変化とその子供の教育について検証した。スラム世帯においては全体的に生活水準が上昇し、子供の就学率も上昇した。生活水準の上昇は、同時にスラム世帯の経済格差を生み、それによって子供の就学する学校にも影響を及ぼしたと考えられることを議論した。
