This paper shows that the topological structures of particle orbits generated by a generic class of vector fields on spherical surfaces, called the flow of finite type, are in one-to-one correspondence with discrete structures such as trees/graphs and sequences of letters. The flow of finite type is an extension of structurally stable Hamiltonian vector fields, which appear in many theoretical and numerical investigations of two-dimensional (2D) incompressible fluid flows. Moreover, it contains compressible 2D vector fields such as the Morse–Smale vector fields and the projection of 3D vector fields onto 2D sections. The discrete representation is not only a simple symbolic identifier for the topological structure of complex flows, but it also gives rise to a new methodology of topological data analysis for flows when applied to data brought by measurements, experiments, and numerical simulations of complex flows. As a proof of concept, we provide some applications of the representation theory to 2D compressible vector fields and a 3D vector field arising in an industrial problem.

Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, 2022年08月, [査読有り]The Long-time behavior of orbits is one of the most fundamental properties in dynamical systems. Poincaré studied the Poisson stability, which satisfies a time-reversal symmetric condition, to capture the property of whether points return arbitrarily near the initial positions after a sufficiently long time. Birkhoff introduced and studied the concept of non-wandering points, which is one of the time-reversal symmetric conditions. Moreover, minimality and pointwise periodicity satisfy the time-reversal symmetric condition for limit sets. This paper characterizes flows with the time-reversal symmetric condition for limit sets, which refine the characterization of irrational or Denjoy flows by Athanassopoulos. Using the description, we construct flows on a sphere with Lakes of Wada attractors and with an arbitrarily large number of complementary domains, which are flow versions of such examples of spherical homeomorphisms constructed by Boroński, Činč, and Liu.

Therefore generic time evaluations of gradient flows on orientable closed surfaces (e.g. solutions of differential equations) are described by alternating sequences of Morse flows and instantaneous non-Morse gradient flows. To illustrate the generic transitions (e.g. bifurcations of singular points, transitions via heteroclinic separatrices), we characterize and list all generic non-Morse gradient flows. To construct such characterizations, we characterize isolated singular points of gradient flows on surfaces. In fact, such a singular point is a non-trivial finitely sectored singular point without elliptic sectors. Moreover, considering Morse-Smale flows as "generic gradient flows with limit cycles", we characterize and list all generic non-Morse-Smale flows.</p>

Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems, 巻:42, 号:5, 開始ページ:2295, 終了ページ:2295, 2022年, [査読有り]<p style='text-indent:20px;'>We construct topological invariants, called abstract weak orbit spaces, of flows and homeomorphisms on topological spaces. In particular, the abstract weak orbit spaces of flows on topological spaces are refinements of Morse graphs of flows on compact metric spaces, Reeb graphs of Hamiltonian flows with finitely many singular points on surfaces, and the CW decompositions which consist of the unstable manifolds of singular points for Morse flows on closed manifolds. Though the CW decomposition of a Morse flow is finite, the intersection of the unstable manifold and the stable manifold of closed orbits need not consist of finitely many connected components. Therefore we study the finiteness. Moreover, we consider when the time-one map reconstructs the topology of the original flow. We show that the orbit space of a Hamiltonian flow with finitely many singular points on a compact surface is homeomorphic to the abstract weak orbit space of the time-one map by taking an arbitrarily small reparametrization and that the abstract weak orbit spaces of a Morse flow on a compact manifold and the time-one map are homeomorphic. In addition, we state examples whose Morse graphs are singletons but whose abstract weak orbit spaces are not singletons.</p>

We study the transition graph of generic Hamiltonian surface flows, whose vertices are the topological equivalence classes of generic Hamiltonian surface flows and whose edges are the generic transitions. Using the transition graph, we can describe time evaluations of generic Hamiltonian surface flows (e.g., fluid phenomena) as walks on the graph. We propose a method for constructing the complete transition graph of all generic Hamiltonian flows. In fact, we construct two complete transition graphs of Hamiltonian surface flows having three and four genus elements. Moreover, we demonstrate that a lower bound on the transition distance between two Hamiltonian surface flows with any number of genus elements can be calculated by solving an integer programming problem using vector representations of Hamiltonian surface flows.

© 2019, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature. Since the pioneering work of Ghys et al., it has been known that several methods of dynamical systems theory can be adopted to study of foliations. Our aim in this paper is to investigate complexity of foliations, by generalising existence problem of time averages in dynamical systems theory to foliations: It has recently been realised that a positive Lebesgue measure set of points without time averages only appears for complicated dynamical systems, such as dynamical systems with heteroclinic connections or homoclinic tangencies. In this paper, we introduce the concept of length averages to singular foliations, and attempt to collect interesting examples with/without length averages. In particular, we demonstrate that length averages exist everywhere for any codimension one C1 orientable singular foliation without degenerate singularities on a compact surface under a mild condition on quasi-minimal sets of the foliation, which is in strong contrast to time averages of surface flows.

We consider Hamiltonian vector fields with a dipole singularity satisfying the slip boundary condition in two-dimensional multiply connected domains. One example of such Hamiltonian vector fields is an incompressible and inviscid flow in exterior multiply connected domains with a uniform flow, whose Hamiltonian is called the stream function. Here, we are concerned with topological structures of the level sets of the Hamiltonian, which we call streamlines by analogy from incompressible fluid flows. Classification of structurally stable streamline patterns has been considered in Yokoyama and Sakajo (2013), where a procedure to assign a unique sequence of words, called the maximal word, to these patterns is proposed. Thanks to this procedure, we can identify every streamline pattern with its representing sequence of words up to topological equivalence. In the present paper, based on the theory of word representations, we propose a combinatorial method to provide a list of possible transient structurally unstable streamline patterns between two different structurally stable patterns by simply comparing their maximal word representations without specifying any Hamiltonian, Although this method cannot deal with topological streamline changes induced by bifurcations, it reveals the existence of many non-trivial global transitions in a generic sense. We also demonstrate how the present theory is applied to fluid flow problems with vortex structures. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A relativistic helicity has been formulated in the four-dimensional Minkowski space-time. Whereas the relativistic distortion of space-time violates the conservation of the conventional helicity, the newly defined relativistic helicity conserves in a barotropic fluid or plasma, dictating a fundamental topological constraint. The relation between the helicity and the vortex-line topology has been delineated by analyzing the linking number of vortex filaments which are singular differential forms representing the pure states of Banach algebra. While the dimension of space-time is four, vortex filaments link, because vorticities are primarily 2-forms and the corresponding 2-chains link in four dimension; the relativistic helicity measures the linking number of vortex filaments that are proper-time cross-sections of the vorticity 2-chains. A thermodynamic force yields an additional term in the vorticity, by which the vortex filaments on a reference-time plane are no longer pure states. However, the vortex filaments on a proper-time plane remain to be pure states, if the thermodynamic force is exact (barotropic), thus, the linking number of vortex filaments conserves. This study considers the flow of incompressible and inviscid fluid in two-dimensional multiply connected domains. For such flows, encoding algorithms to assign a unique sequence of words to any structurally stable streamline topology based on the theory presented by Yokoyama and Sakajo (2013 Proc. R. Soc. A 469 20120558) are proposed. As an application, we utilize the algorithms to characterize the evolution of an incompressible and viscid flow around a flat plate inclined to the uniform flow in terms of the change of the word representations for their instantaneous streamline topologies. © 2014 The Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics and IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this paper, we obtain a characterization of the recurrence of a continuous vector field w of a closed connected surface M as follows. The following are equivalent: (1) w is pointwise recurrent. (2) w is pointwise almost periodic. (3) w is minimal or pointwise periodic. Moreover, if w is regular, then the following are equivalent: (1) w is pointwise recurrent. (2) w is minimal or the orbit space M/w is either [0, 1], or S-1. (3) R is closed (where R := {(x, y)is an element of M x M vertical bar y is an element of <(O(x))over bar>} is the orbit closure relation). On the other hand, we show that the following are equivalent for a codimension one foliation F on a compact connected manifold: (1) F is pointwise almost periodic. (2) F is minimal or compact. (3) F is R-closed. Also we show that if a foliated space on a compact metrizable space is either minimal or both compact and without infinite holonomy, then it is R-closed. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Let f be an R-closed homeomorphism on a connected orientable closed surface M. In this paper, we show that if M has genus more than one, then each minimal set is either a periodic orbit or an extension of a Cantor set. If M = T-2 and f is neither minimal nor periodic, then either each minimal set is a finite disjoint union of essential circloids or there is a minimal set which is an extension of a Cantor set. If M = S-2 and f is not periodic but orientation-preserving (resp. reversing), then the minimal sets of f (resp. f(2)) are exactly two fixed points and a family of circloids and S-2/(f) over tilde congruent to [0, 1]. Let us consider incompressible and inviscid flows in two-dimensional domains with multiple obstacles. The instantaneous velocity field becomes a Hamiltonian vector field defined from the stream function, and it is topologically characterized by the streamline pattern that corresponds to the contour plot of the stream function. The present paper provides us with a procedure to construct structurally stable streamline patterns generated by finitely many point vortices in the presence of the uniform flow. Starting from some basic structurally stable streamline patterns in a disc of low genus, i.e. a disc with a small number of holes, we repeat some fundamental operations that append a streamline pattern by increasing one genus to them. Owing to the inductive procedure, one can assign a sequence of operations as a representing word to each structurally stable streamline pattern. We also give the canonical expression for the word representation, which allows us to make a catalogue of all possible structurally stable streamline patterns in a combinatorial manner. As an example, we show all streamline patterns in the discs of genus 1 and 2.

Let M be an orientable connected closed surface and f be a homeomorphism on M. Suppose that the set (E) over cap (f) := {(x, y) vertical bar y is an element of O (f) (x)} is closed. Then the suspension of f satisfies one of the following conditions: 1) the closure of each element of it is toral; 2) there is a minimal set which is not locally connected. Moreover, we show that if the set (E) over cap (f) of a homeomorphism f on a compact metrizable space is closed, then so is (E) over cap (f)k for any natural number k. 2012 Academie des sciences. Let F be a transversely orientable transversely real-analytic codimension one minimal foliation of a paracompact manifold M. We show that if the fundamental group of each leaf of F is isomorphic to Z, then F is without holonomy. We also show that if pi(2)(M) congruent to 0 and the fundamental group of each leaf of F is isomorphic to Z(k) (k is an element of Z(>= 0)), then F is without holonomy.

Dyn.
