    Abstract

    A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate an evaluation method for building habitability based on subjective responses to vibrations caused by external sources. Twenty‐five individuals participated in the experiment, which involved 76 input stimulus conditions, including vibrations based on field records and sinusoidal vibrations in the horizontal direction. Subjective responses were measured in terms of “magnitude,” “concern,” and “discomfort,” The study compared several domestic and international evaluation methods for environmental vibrations with subjective responses, revealing that the vibration dose value, which accounts for the effect of vibration duration raised to the fourth power, was the most reasonable method.

    The mechanism of noise generation and noise control for modular expansion joints were investigated in experiments on a full-scale model of the joint. Noise and vibration of the joint model were measured when a car was runnig over the model. It was concluded, based on this measurement together with tests of the acoustic and dynamic characteristics of the joint model, that the noise from the top of the joint could be attributed to a sudden change in the air pressure in the gaps formed by the sealing rubber elements, and the noise from the bottom was probably caused by sound radiation from vibration of the middle beams. Effects of some proposed noise control measures were also investigated experimentally.

    The field measurement of noise and vibration in a PC box-girder bridge with the modular type expansion joint was conducted in order to investigate the characteristics and mechanism of the noise generated from the modular joint possible sound radiating vibration modes of this structure under a vehicle passage. Three components of noise from modular joint are discussed by paying attention to non-stationary phenomenon of the noise generation and propagation. Effects of bridge type, car type and car running speed are also studied on thenoise characteristics.

  • An experimental investigation of the human perception thresholds of complex low frequency sounds

    An experiment has been conducted to investigate the characteristics of human perception of complex low frequency noise. Fifteen subjects took part in the experiment in which the perception thresholds of complex tones consisting of two frequency components and pure tones were measured. The frequencies of the tones used in the experiment were 25, 31.5, 40 and 50 Hz. For the complex tones, the perception thresholds were determined by changing the sound pressure level of a frequency component while the sound pressure level of another frequency component was fixed at 5 or 10 dB below the pure tone perception threshold at the corresponding frequency. It was found that the frequency component at the level below the pure tone thresholds might have an effect on the perception of the complex tone.

    This study investigates the mechanism of noise generation from the modular type joint in highway bridges and quantifies the effectiveness of countermeasures. A series of experiments was conducted with a full-scale model of the modular type joint, where the noise and vibration characteristics of the joint with and without countermeasures were investigated under a vehicle passage. The dynamic characteristics of the joint was also studied by the impulsive hummer testing as well as by the eigenvalue analysis with the FEM model of joint.

    The objective of this research was to propose a reasonable evaluation method for environmental vibration caused by vibration of bridges based on human subjective responses to vibration. Such vibration can have the following characteristics: dominant horizontal vibration which has a transient nature depending on traffic condition, horizontal vibration combined with vertical vibration, and vibration combined with audible noise correlated with the vibration. Subjective responses to vibrations with those characteristics were investigated in laboratory experiments and the experimental data that can be applicable to the development of evaluation methods were able to be accumulated.

    The purpose of this study is to quantitatively examine the combineeffects of noise and vibration due to railways on the living environment, and to obtain knowledge on the effects that will occur in the living environment along railway lines and specific measures to be implemented. From the experimental results, it was confirmed that not only the loudness of the sound but also the loudness of the vibration affects the reading disturbance. It was also shown that the effect of vibration on annoyance was small when the noise stimulus was large, and the effect of vibration was particularly large when the noise stimulus was small. In the comparison between horizontal and vertical vibrations, there was no difference in loudness, annoyance, and disturbance with respect to vibration when passing through a railway, and with regard to the degree of concern, even with the same vibration level, with respect to horizontal vibration rather than vertical vibration.

    The objective of the present study was to accumulate fundamental knowledge about the applicability of stress evaluation based on brain waves measured by a portable electroencephalograph to the assessment of environmental vibrations. The experimental results implied that the evaluation based on brain waves might be related to subjective responses to vibration. However, there was significant inter-subject variability in the experimental results, which might be caused by various factors, including the method and accuracy of the measurement of brain wave with portable electroencephalographs.

    This survey was conducted in November 2016, one year after the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line. Questionnaires were distributed to the inhabitants of 20s and the older living in detached houses along the railway in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures by mailing method. We selected 1,980 households for survey cooperation and got 1,0022 responses. The main question items were as follows: housing and living environments, transportation facilities (including noise and vibration), lifestyle habits and individual factors. We examined the relationship between noise and community responses. Annoyance caused by respondents in area without conventional railway was significant higher than that in other area. Evaluation of falling asleep disturbance and dissatisfaction of opening window were also influenced by existence of conventional railway in residential area.
    We are planning to investigate the combined effects of noise and vibration in the future.

    In this study, it fundamental investigation aimed at enabling a reduction in the construction work vibration using a vibrating system or mass. The effects of the equipment were verified by model experiments and analysis by three-dimensional ground model. It was confirmed that the vibration system obtained effects from a low vibration frequency. It was confirmed that the mass body obtained the effect with higher frequency than the vibration system. In any case, it was confirmed that the reduction effect was maximized on the back side of the device. These devices are smaller than conventional countermeasure techniques. Therefore, it is effective for pinpoint measures, such as when houses get close to construction boundaries.

    The temperature dependence of mechanical characteristics of high damping rubber bearings (HDRBs) was investigated through cyclic loading tests under different ambient temperatures, especially sub-zero environment. The ambient temperatures and temperatures inside HDRBs during cyclic loading were
    different due to self hating, and it is found that mechanical behavior of HDRBs is governed by the inside temperatures. A simple method to estimate the inside temperature was developed on the basis of the cyclic loading tests and thermal conductivity analyses results. Previous cyclic loading tests results at different ambient temperatures were reexamined based on the inside temperatures to estimate temperature dependence of HDRBs.

    A purpose of the studies is to establish a design technology about the TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) control to take measures by ground environment vibration to occur by a construction machine.
    The reduction effect of the environmental ground vibration by the TMD control was inspected by the vibration response analysis using the three-dimensional ground model and the experiment using the size of the original model. It was revealed that the vibration reduction effect of the TMD control greatly depended on the mass of TMD system, damping of TMD system, and the ratio of frequency for control and the resonance frequency of TMD system. The vibration reduction effect by the TMD control grows big so that the TMD mass is big, the damping is low, and the frequency ratio is almost 1. We will examine the power of the construction machine and the relations with the TMD control parameter.

    Damages (such as tension crack, corrosion and partial fracture) and damage –induced local damping increment in steel member, concrete member and steel-concrete interface are first experimentally studied to discuss the mechanism of local damping increased by local damages. The evaluation method of structural health condition for steel, RC and PC bridges is then proposed by developing a hybrid method of experimental and analytical modal syntheses based on ambient vibration measurement and global damping change monitoring. The method of ambient vibration measurement is carefully studied for optimizing it as a system and the identification of global damping change in bridges is refined with FE model updating method. How to implement the proposed method of bridge health evaluation to the Bridge Management System was finally discussed.

    The fracture critical members were identified by conducting the structural redundancy analysis of steel truss bridges and the effects of load-carrying capacity of concrete deck as well as member joint were investigated. The dynamic characteristics of truss bridges, classified into the global, local and coupled modes, were also clarified in detail by the experimental/theoretical modal analyses. The feasibility of vibration-based health monitoring of steel truss bridges, based on the field measurement as well as the impulse hummer test, was finally discussed by showing the fact that the damping ratios of coupled modes and the group of higher natural frequencies in local modes can be changed in identifiable amount by having local damages in truss diagonal members.

    The objective of this research is to investigate the mechanism, annoyance and control of environmental noises generated by vehicle passage through modular type expansion joint in highway bridges. The research results are summarized as follows.1. The mechanism and control of noise generation for modular expansion joints were investigated in experiments on a full-scale model of the joint. Noise and vibration of the joint model were measured when a car was running over the model. It was concluded, based on this measurement together with tests of the acoustic and dynamic characteristics of the joint model, that the noise from the top of the joint could be attributed to a sudden change in the air pressure in the gaps formed by the sealing rubber elements, and the noise from the bottom was probably caused by sound radiation from vibration of the middle beams. Effects of some proposed noise control measures were also investigated experimentally.2. Field measurements of noise and vibration were conducted in a non-composite I-shaped steel-girder bridge and in a PC box girder bridge with modular expansion joints. In each case, the noise was measured at several points above and below the bridge when different type of vehicles passed over the joint with different speeds. The non-stationary characteristics of noise propagation in the field and effects of bridge, vehicle, and joint types were clarified. Possible sources of environmental noise problem were also discussed by studying the A-filtered spectra of sound pressures and their non-stationary characteristics.3. The annoyance of field-measured noises of modular type joint was also investigated by psychoacoustic experiment in a laboratory in order to identify the annoying noise components.

    The main objective of this study is to develop an energy-based method for evaluating damping characteristics of structures with special reference to sub-structural interaction. The main parts of the present study are summarized as follows.
    1. The coupled cable-vibration characteristics and its effect on the modal damping characteristics have been investigated for long-span cable-stayed bridges by conducting the experimental modal analysis based on ERA, the theoretical modal analysis based on FEM, and the damping analysis based on sub-structural synthesis for the Tatara Bridge.
    2. A explicit formula for modal damping of girder bridge has been derived by applying the energy-based evaluation method with an assumption of girder's internal damping and support's friction damping, and its validity has been checked with field vibration data as well as a model experiment data. The damping mechanism of girder bridges has been also clarified by evaluatin damping contributions of substructures such as concrete slab and steel main girder in 2-girders and 4-girders bridges.
    3. The energy-based damping analysis of a cable system model consisting of two identical cables with a secondary cable was conducted and the results were compared with the experimental ones. It is concluded that the modal damping of system can be made higher by means of internal resonance among substructures.
    4. Robust performance of hysteretic dampers, used in controlling mid-rise buildings, against change of earthquake characteristics is investigated by introducing an energy-based damper performance index. It is found out that, besides the effect of maximum energy input on damper efficiency, othertime dependant properties as energy-based effective duration and earthquake dominant period have great influence on the damper efficiency.
    5. A general method for evaluating a damping matrix of structure has been studied by considering an equivalent complex stiffness matrix but is still under investigation.

  • Constitutive Modeling for Strain-Rate Dependency of Natural and High Damping Rubbers

    The microstructure and the mechanical behavior of natural rubber (NR) and high damping rubber (HDR) were investigated. In this study, most of the attention was paid to the compression regime. The mechanical tests revealed the existence of Mullins' effect, strainrate dependency, hystersis and residual strain effects in all the specimens. In NR, the extent of these effects were found to have a inherent relation with the presence of microstructural voids. The presence of all these effects was also found to be significant in HDR. In addition, the strain-rate dependent high initial stiffness feature at low compressive stretch levels also became evident from the experiments. However, the microstructural observation of the current study could not explain these features of HDR. This prompted for the need of considering a phenomenological approach to reach a general constitutive model.
    A constitutive model based on phenomenological motivation was introduced to model the strain-rate dependency. An improved hyperelasticity model was proposed to represent the rate-independent elastic responses including high initial stiffness characteristics. A comparative evaluation was carried out to display the better performance of the proposed hyperelasticity model over the conventional ones. The hyperelasticity relation was incorporated in a finite deformation rate-dependent model structure. A parameter identification scheme was proposed to identify the parameters for the equilibrium and the instantaneous responses from the experimental data. The difficulties of direct application of infinitely fast or slow loading rate on such highly viscous material to obtain these responses and thereby to identify the nonlinear elastic parameters were overcome. Experimental results were extrapolated and the proposed hyperelasticity model was used. The proposed scheme was applied on three types of specimens. Numerical simulation of the test results at different deformation modes followed by sensitivity studies verified the adequacy and the robustness of the proposed model and the parameter identification scheme.
