  • Cognitive Psychology for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities in Japan: Characteristics and Issues for Future Research

Journal of Special Education Research, Volume:13, Number:2, First page:79, Last page:84, Apr. 2025, [Reviewed], [Lead]
The current study was conducted to review the literature related to cognitive psychological studies for individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs) to reveal their characteristics and issues for future research. A summary of 206 publications produced through August 2023 suggests four characteristics of these studies in Japan. First, the number of publications in this area in Japan has been declining. Second, while many cross-sectional studies have been reported, longitudinal studies remain scarce. Third, few studies have examined individuals with IDs, classified by causative or comorbidity, excluding Down syndrome and autism. Fourth, considerable research has examined the original conditions, with tasks from earlier studies under the original framework, employing analyses with multiple indicators. It is noteworthy that many of these original tasks were influenced by Soviet psychology.

  • Relationship between teacher ideals and attitudes toward peers with autism spectrum disorder among teacher college students

Advances in Autism, Aug. 2024, [Reviewed]
    Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between teacher ideals and attitudes toward peers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among teacher college students, and the effect of knowledge of ASD identification on this relationship.

    Design/methodology/approach

This study used a quantitative approach and included 341 teacher college students. A vignette was used to assess social and professional attitudes toward peers with ASD. The participants were divided into identification and nonidentification groups based on how accurately they identified the peer depicted in the vignette as having ASD. A teacher ideals questionnaire consisting of two subscales indicating different ideal teachers − a dedicated/engaging teacher (e.g. a teacher who can work with enthusiasm) and a skillful teacher (e.g. a teacher who is knowledgeable) − was developed and administered to evaluate the participants’ teacher ideals and self-perceptions of a teacher.

    Findings

In the nonidentification group, ideals of a skillful teacher were significantly correlated with social attitudes toward peers with ASD. The identification group exhibited no significant correlations between ideals and social attitudes. Furthermore, the self-perceptions of being a dedicated/engaging teacher was significantly correlated with professional attitudes toward peers with ASD in the identification group.

    Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to examine the relationship between teacher ideals and attitudes toward peers with ASD. Teacher ideals were related to negative social attitudes toward peers with ASD. While knowledge of ASD identification weakens this relationship, it may drive the relationship between self-perceptions of a teacher and professional attitudes toward peers with ASD. Therefore, ASD education is important for reducing the stigma toward ASD in teacher education.

Medication effects in children with ADHD are clinically assessed based on behavioral observation. Since the medication also possibly affects academic performance, the present study examined school grades before and after medication. Thirty-nine children with ADHD participated in this study who were continuously treated with medications. Their official school grades were collected and analyzed before and after medication. The grades were collected from primary school children. After medication, primary school children with ADHD showed significant improvement of school grades (relating to interest, willingness, and attitude) in Japanese, mathematics, and physical education. They did not show any change in other subjects. ADHD medication helped the primary school children to have a positive attitude towards learning, resulting in positive evaluation from the teacher and improvement of academic performance.

It has been pointed out that the awareness of career education in special needs school for children with physical disabilities is lower than that in other types of disabilities. The present study is examined the career education guidance and the awareness of teachers in special needs school for children with physical disabilities. The result showed that less guidance was given on career education in the severe and multiple course. These results suggested the difficulty of career education in the severe and multiple course, the difficulty of resolving the lack of experience in the presence of restrictions.

This study administered the famous serial recall task, a picture memory span task, twice to children with ASD, to ascertain whether children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) consistently use strategies in visual serial recall task. Results revealed that children with ASD used both of phonological and visual strategies. This pattern is expected to begin at earlier ages. However this result should be interpreted carefully because recall on multiple supports is assumed to be advantageous.

This study was conducted to investigate the relation between the effect of articulatory suppression on the serial recall and severity of social impairments among children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The Luria hand test (LHT) was administered to evaluate the capacity for serial recall in 13 children with ASD. The LHT was administered under three conditions: control, under articulatory suppression, and under spatial suppression. Performance on the LHT of children with ASD was significantly lower in terms of both articulatory suppression and the spatial suppression condition. Moreover, the severity of social impairment in children with ASD was related to individual differences of effects of articulatory suppression on the LHT, but not with effects of spatial suppression. These results support the notion that dialogic inner speech which mediates complex cognitive abilities has inherently social origins.
