This paper introduces recent Japanese debates marking the 250th anniversary of Robert Owen’s birth in 2021. It identifies five key issues in Japanese research: (i) the relationship between Owen and utilitarianism; (ii) debates between Owen and William Thompson; (iii) the question of science and utopia; (iv) Owen’s later ideological development; and (v) his relationship to economic and political movements. The paper focuses on Owen’s socialism, which emerged alongside the rapid development of science during the Industrial Revolution, as Owen sought to connect his vision of utopia with scientific methods of calculation and deduction. The paper makes reference to the relationship between socialist ideas and utilitarian science, which was the starting point for Owen’s co-operative thought. By analysing Owen’s texts, we identify four key features that characterise Owenite socialism: (i) happiness-seeking utilitarianism; (ii) an emphasis on human development and the role of education (character formation theory) based on environmental determinism; (iii) criticism of individualistic institutions that hinder happiness; and (iv) scientism or empiricism.

Generally speaking, the Marxist approach cannot explain the modern banking system because of its stand on metallism. We find that this misapprehension occurs not only in Schumpeter's summarization of monetary doctrines as metallism but also in Marx's critique of Attwood's ideal account of money. The former can be rectified easily by analyzing the concept of the commodity, but research on the latter has been limited. In Zur Kritik der politischen Ökonomie(1859), it seems that Marx supports the 'real' concept of money or money as metal since he obviously denies the ideal or nominal concept of money. However, this study provides another interpretation―that the notion of 'ideal' does not necessarily signify nonvalue nor need it be unrelated to the commodity economy in Marx's sense ― by reconsidering the historical understanding of the debates regarding the ideal account of money. We focus on two letters from Attwood to the Earl of Liverpool indicating that Attwood's concept of the ideal has three purposes. The first is to move the monetary system from the gold standard of value to the real value of the pound because economic subjects commonly have fine gold in mind when they present an ideal account of money rather than gold coins circulated as sovereigns. The second is to treat monetary value as inter-temporal because artificial changes in the standard of value can cause confusion in the credit-debt relationship. The third is to raise prices and promote national wealth by extending the Bank Restriction Act because reverting to the gold standard can lead both to depreciating prices and to a shrinking national economy. The result of the examination clarifies the linkage between the value of the ideal account of money and the commodity economy and considers inconsistencies in the concept of value in the two letters.

This paper modifies traditional understandings of critical points in Marx's vision of capitalism and socialism, and introduces two theories of a redefined "thin" socialism. We believe that anti-capitalism is guided by a critical analysis of Marxian political economy. Marx insisted that capitalism cannot grow without exploitation and oppression (alienation), because of capitalists' despotic control over production process and the anarchistic ex post coordination of markets. The traditional interpretation is that resolving these problems requires, first, switching from private ownership of the means of production to social ownership, and second, switching from ex post to ex ante integrated decision-making. In other words, socialism must combine social ownership with central planning. However, a careful reading of Marx reveals no advocacy of socialist-style central planning. Rather, Marx scrutinized capitalism's dynamic processes and conferred the possibility of self-destruction. But, he did not describe post-capitalist society clearly. We reconsider capitalism as a twofold system of exploitation involving a production process and a circulation process, and articulate the ideas of socialism their functions and ends in consequence. We then reconstruct two approaches to socialism: the circulation-theory approach in "Labour Notes" and the production-theory approach of labor- managed market socialism. The reforms of monetary and credit systems proposed in "Labour Notes" and by many 19th century socialists are heterodox ideas in economics but orthodox among socialists. "Labour Money" is interpreted as incomplete money by Marx and many preceding studies. We observe the difference in interpretations by "Labour Money" theorists Proudhon and Owen in "Capital", and the historical and theoretical development of "Labour Notes", by the Owenites and post-Owenites. Circulation-theory approach demonstrates the possibility of expanding individual freedom and creating an association of independent small pro ducers through a market formed along the "Labour Notes" scheme. In his version of labor-managed market socialism, called "post-Hayekian socialism", Burczak proposes a "thin" socialism denoted by a redefinition of exploitation and social reproduction organized by labor-managed firms. His market socialism is consistent with private ownership and a competitive market economy, but without exploitation. The production-theory approach demonstrates the radical deconstruction of Marxian socialism put forth in Sen and Nussbaum's theory of capabilities and by Ackerman and Alstott's theory of a stakeholder society emphasizing procedural justice in markets governed by the rule of law, appropriative justice of surplus labor, and development of subjective human well-being.

The purpose of this study is to present a systematic understanding of contemporary monetary theory through the controversial history of money of account. The research results were presented in three areas: (1) a historical study of the theory of money of account based on the Birmingham school, (2) clarification of the process of acceptance of the theory of money of account by Marxians and post-Keynesians, and (3) presentation of a systematic understanding of modern monetary and financial institutions. While the post-Keynesian school explains credit money in nominalist terms, the Marxian school is characterized by its emphasis on commodity economic logic through the theory of value forms. The Birmingham school’s theory of money of account has also been classified as nominalist, but Enderby’s theory of money of account has been shown to be original in that it questions the relationship between commodity value and labor substance.

Our researches provides a comprehensive map of money theory by summarising contemporary and historical debates about two questions ‘what is money?’ and ‘What is credit money?’. Three schools of European and US Marxists, Post-Keynesians, and Sociologists explain all forms of money such as commodity money, inconvertible bank note, and fiat money (government paper money) by sole theory of money, but according to our researches, fiat money cannot be explained by the logic of commodity economy. Furthermore, we clarified it by reconsidering doctrines of Birmingham school of Attwood and Enderby that modern interpretations of account theory of money were influenced by how to understand the account theory of money of Attwood.

The theory of Labour note is a doctrine of money and credit reform which claims to correct labour evaluation gap, recover mutual relationship in regional community, and re-construct stable market economy. This theory occurred in the UK at the beginning of 19th century, and then spread over western European countries and the USA. This study clarifies the spreading processes via examining original materials. Labour note has changed its functions and significances in the processes of accepting in each countries and regions. Moreover, we found that the theory deepened its understandings of money and market through the debate of this theory.
