This study investigates “hypothetical bias,” defined as the difference in the willingness to pay for a product attribute between hypothetical and non-hypothetical conditions in a choice experiment, for the carbon footprint of mandarin oranges in Japan. We conducted the following four treatments: a non-hypothetical lab economic experiment, a hypothetical lab survey, a hypothetical online survey, and a hypothetical online survey with cheap-talk. Each treatment asked participants to choose one of three oranges based on price and carbon emissions level. Next, participants were asked to answer questions on demographics and the following three kinds of environmental factors: environmental consciousness, purchasing behavior for goods with eco-labels, and daily environmental behavior. Using the random parameter logit model, the willingness to pay per 1g of carbon emission reduction were 0.53 JPY, 0.52 JPY, 0.54 JPY, and 0.58 JPY in the non-hypothetical lab economic experiment, hypothetical lab survey, hypothetical online survey and hypothetical online survey with cheap-talk, respectively. The complete combinatorial test of the willingness to pay for carbon emission reductions indicates no hypothetical bias between any treatment combinations. Our findings reveal that environmental attributes for food are less likely to show hypothetical bias than other goods. The results of the main effect with an interaction term show that environmental consciousness reduces the coefficients of carbon emissions in all treatments. Therefore, a psychological scale is useful for showing whether hypothetical bias emerges with treatment or participants’ personal backgrounds.

The purpose is to experimentally examine the effect of disclosing the risk probability of each unit in a production system on human behavior and the resulting system reliability. We used an economic experiment based on the theoretical model of Hausken (2002) to evaluate the effect of disclosing the relation between effort and unit reliability. We conducted first the non-disclosed-risk experiment and then the disclosed-risk experiment within subjects in both series and parallel systems. Our experimental results show that disclosing the relation between effort and unit reliability has two positive effects. First, subjects succeeded in improving the system reliability while cutting back on efforts to reduce the risk of their units when the risk probability was disclosed. In each system, the disclosed-risk condition achieves significantly higher system reliability on average than does the non-disclosed-risk condition, although the average level of effort is significantly lower under the disclosed-risk condition than under the non-disclosed-risk condition. Second, disclosing the risk probability simplified the subjects’ decision-making process and reduced its cost because subjects made their decisions on the amount of effort to exert based only on the risk probability information without considering other factors, such as the number of accidents.

© 2020, Fuji Technology Press. All rights reserved. This study develops a casual smart Na/K meter to measure the sodium and potassium in urine for hypertensive patients. To prevent hypertension from leading to cardiopathies, it is useful to reduce salt intake. The Omron Healthcare Co., Ltd. lunched the prototype, a casual Na/K meter to measure the salt intake from a diet. Nevertheless, it lacks the function to make the patients grasp the historical data. This study improves that meter by adding the NFC and developing the software application linked to Android smartphones and smart watches. Smartphones can store the data and display the historical data. Smart watches make up a part of their daily lives by alerts and messages. The concept of this study provides a continuous value for hypertensive patients. That value is similar to the learning value but it exists beyond the learning effect. For the learning value, after the subjects learn something and obtain the skills, ability, and knowledge, the value is fixed and completed. On the other hand, for the continuous value, the learning value is also included and the subjects receive the learning value; however, they need to continue that behavior until death. If they stop reducing salt intake, they return to hypertension. If they get satisfied with obtaining the learning value and stop their actions, they never receive the continuous value that exists beyond the learning value. The continuous value is brewed in the transtheoretical model of health behavior change. Throughout these stages, to encourage their behavioral change and obtain the continuous value, this study employs Fogg’s theory applied to developing the communication devices. The application stocks the historical data and displays it on the smartphones. The smart watches classify alerts into five colored displays from green (good) to red (bad). It can be helpful for the patients to make the reduction of salt intake as their dietary habit. In the future, the appli cation needs to be improved for making patients adapt with their diets and motivations.

We investigate consumers' reactions to information on rice types produced using a cultivation method that protects the crested ibis (Nipponia nippon), a symbol of the endangered birds of Japan. We employ a non-hypothetical choice experiment with real monetary incentives, in which participants taste three types of rice—Niigata rice, Sado rice, and Sado-Ibis certified rice (Ibis rice)—and choose one to take home. The participants make decisions twice in each choice set, once before and once after tasting. Three information treatments are used: information about taste ranking from chefs and consumers, cultivation method, and no-information. Comparing the expected and actual willingness to pay (WTP) for Ibis rice, only the cultivation method information increases the WTP, which triples. The WTP in the taste ranking information treatment becomes lower among the participants who refer to chefs, but there is no significant difference in preferences between the expected and actual stages among all participants. For Sado rice, the WTP increases when we provide no-information or information on the cultivation method. In both cases, the WTP changes from negative to positive relative to Niigata rice; however, this WTP is less than that for Ibis rice. These results imply that consumers are more sensitive to information of process and effort for a cultivation method that protects endangered species than to the information about taste ranking.

Japan and Thailand have joined the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which introduces cheaper US-produced rice into the domestic markets of these countries. This study investigates consumers' preferences for cheaper US-produced rice in Japan and Thailand. To compare the willingness to pay for rice in these two countries, we employ a choice experiment that comprises five attributes: country of origin, fair trade label, cultivation method, taste ranking, and price. The random parameter logit model estimation results show that Japanese people prefer organic rice more than Thai people do and dislike US rice much more than Thai people do. Thai people prefer fair trade more than Japanese people do. The willingness to pay for taste ranking is identical across these countries. Taste ranking has the lowest and second lowest willingness to pay in Japan and Thailand, respectively. Further, gender is the most influential socioeconomic characteristic. Japanese women prefer premium rice with various attributes and dislike US-produced rice more than Thai women do. These results suggest that US-produced rice is unacceptable for Japanese people regardless of the price level, while it could be acceptable for Thai people if the price level is adequately low. Additionally, it is reasonable for Japanese rice producers to grow organic rice to compete in the market, while Thai rice suppliers prefer to enhance their fair trade labels. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. This article investigates what types of social distance affect the best offer from an employee and its approval from a customer in general service situation. We conduct the deception game (Gneezy, 2005) and investigate the effects of the social distance (face-to-face vs. anonymous interaction) in a laboratory experimental economics method. We observed increases in the rate at which employees made best offers and the rates at which customers accepted offers when face-to-face interactions were conducted. But a statistically significant difference was not observed. Also, the level of trust in others reported by the subject playing the role of the employee had a statistically significant positive effect in cases in which the employee made a best offer. It was also observed that, regardless of whether the interaction was conducted face to face or anonymously, if the subject playing the role of the customer exhibited a low level of tolerance for falsehood, he or she was less likely to accept offers.

We focus on Japanese rice to provide recommendations to protect the Ibis, an endangered bird in Japan, and evaluate how Ecologically Conscious Consumer Behavior (ECCB) affect consumers' Willingness To Pay (WTP) via the choice experiment method. Participants are provided with the necessary eco-information pertaining to rice production, and are required to taste and purchase the rice. The results indicate that consumers with high ECCB display higher WTP after they are provided with the necessary eco-information pertaining to rice production.

This study investigates whether consumers select foods based on the levels of carbon dioxide emissions by a real choice experiment. Respondents are asked to purchase one orange based on price and level of CO2 emissions under no monetary incentives. The willingness to pay estimate for the reduction of 1g of CO2 emissions per orange is significantly lower for the low environmentally conscious group than it is for the high environmentally conscious group.

This study aims to theoretically analyze whether the information service provider improves the market efficiency. We construct a model where a good supplied by a producer has a risk to be harmful for a consumer because of an accident and it brings monetary losses to both consumers and producers. The accident risk is endogenously determined by the efforts of producers and consumers and the information of safety provided by the producers. The information service provider requires producers to provide information and certifies the credibility of information. In the equilibrium, if the entry cost for the information service provider is small, the optimal effort levels spent by the consumer and producer increase and the risk of accident decreases, which improves the market efficiency.

Our purpose of this study is evaluating preferences for air travel services connected between the east and west central cities in Japan, Tokyo and Osaka, to consider the appropriate re-allocation design of airports in Japan. We employ a choice experiment and recruit more than 500 respondents in east and west areas in Japan and investigate their preferences. Our results are as follows. The existing airline connected west hub airport, Itami, in Osaka and east hub airport, Haneda, in Tokyo is much preferred to the other lines connected cities surrounding Osaka and Tokyo. Kobe and Kansai international airports are preferable to Itami airport, while Haneda is the much preferable to Ibaraki and Narita international airports. Increasing the mileage program and the availability of web check-in have positive significant effects but these impacts are small. These results imply that the most important factor for using air travel services is convenience for traveling by using the nearest airports. In this meaning, if the new airlines can be connected to Haneda, the government's re-allocation plan from Itami airport to Kobe and Kansai international airports has a chance to succeed to minimize the economic efficiency loss for the people traveling between east and west areas in Japan.

Both the presence/absence of food additives and provision of accurate information pertaining to the same are considered to be important factors affecting individuals' purchase decisions. In this paper, we apply the choice experiment approach under both real (the laboratory experiment) and hypothetical (the field survey) environments to investigate how consumers value a food additive (sodium nitrite) present in ham sandwiches and whether the provision of information about sodium nitrite affects individuals' choice. The results suggest that in both real and hypothetical situations, participants do not favor the use of sodium nitrite, per se, regardless of whether or not the detailed information is provided. Moreover, the willingness to pay values for ham sandwiches without sodium nitrite are estimated to be lower in the experiment and higher in the survey after negative and positive information is provided, implying that the effect of information provision differs between these two environments. In addition, further investigation of the participants' reasons for choosing ham sandwiches indicates that the information related to flavor seems to have more influence on the consumers' choice behavior in a real situation, while the information associated with health risk is like to play a relatively more important role in a hypothetical situation. We experimentally examine whether consulting with other persons before making investment decisions can prevent elderly people from becoming victims of fraudulent investments. Elderly subjects are faced with deciding a hypothetical investment allocation between a fraudulent investment and an ordinary stock investment trust. The fraudulent investment’s principal is guaranteed and has a far higher expected return compared to the current financial market condition. Subjects are asked to decide two times for different combinations of the two products. We set up two treatment groups. One group is such that subjects have to consult with each other about investments before deciding the allocations, and the other group is such that subjects have to decide by themselves. We compare the investment allocations of the two groups. We find that, for the first decision, subjects who consult with each other have a higher allocation to the fraudulent investment. This suggests that consulting with families or other close relations may not help prevent elderly people from becoming victims of fraudulent investment. We also find that, for the second decision, investment allocation to fraudulent investment is less than that of the first decision for subjects who consult with each other. This suggests that experience may be important for effective consulting. It may be helpful to expose elderly people to the details of fraudulent investment technique in order to reduce the number of victims. It may be also useful to point out specific contents of consulting such as comparing current and past saving interest rates.

This study investigates consumers’ value for biodiversity foods and theoretical model on efforts of consumers and producers because of designing for a safe and secure social system on foods, agriculture and environment. The first task is to measure consumer’s value by employing a choice experiment with experimental economic. The result shows that process information influence that value positively. The second task is to construct the economic model in sequential games about efforts of consumers and producers for preventing endangered animal. The result shows that the equilibrium is to have the efforts of them for it. The third task is to survey such examples at home and abroad. The result shows that peoples’ consciousness about a deal influence to let the system be good.

A first purpose “Trust information for consumers” was conducted in a real buying experiment and a hypothetical survey. Both of them were recruited subjects as students and non-students. Subjects selected one of three oranges based on price and the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in front of oranges. Since subjects received monetary endowment at each session, they selected an orange under it. The results both the experiment and the survey were shown that high environmental consciousness consumers value oranges with low CO2. Moreover there was not shown a Hypothetical bias such that willingness to pay in hypothetical condition is higher than that in real condition.Second purpose “Theoretical analysis on food safety for producer’s behavior” was constructed under double moral hazard problem. Consumers and producers had an internal effort variable, respectively. According to the models, social function with information provider on safety was constructed also. Based on risk function consisted both effort variables, maximization problems in each player were solved. The theoretical proof was shown the validity of information provider.

The purpose in the study is to investigate the lying behavior under monetary incentive by using a modified deception game. In the experiment, participants consist of students in the Osaka University and residents around one. In the game, one person in a room and other person in another room interact with each other. The participants can earn more the real money when they tell a lie than when they tell the truth. The results are the followings. The percentage of the lying behavior is about 40% on average. The most percentage of the lying behavior is about 50% when participants are in anonymity condition and the most different payoff between pairs. In the face-to-face condition as compared to anonymity one, liars intend to confess the lying to persons in the pair. The percentage of deceived persons is about 68% among told a lie participants, which they intend to believe the partners even though they are told a lie.
