  • Enhancing critical thinking in mathematics education: A rubric for students’ social values

    This research focuses on enhancing critical thinking in secondary mathematics education using carefully constructed teaching materials. Utilizing socially open-ended framework, complemented by perspectives from critical mathematics education, the study aims to promote students’ critical thinking skills. The developed materials were implemented in a unique lesson centred around the 60-second challenge, whereby students were tasked to propose rule modifications. The study also aimed to identify students’ social values, considering these as interconnected with their capacity for critical thought. The assessments involved multiple teachers evaluating student reports using rubric and students participating in peer review activities within the class. The lesson’s outcome illustrated students’ ability to propose thoughtful improvements to the existing rules, reflecting their critical thinking abilities. Furthermore, this innovative series of evaluation activities via the rubric provides a foundation for future research in the assessment of critical thinking, serving as a potential model for future studies.

    The concept of splitting-balanced block designs (SBD) was defined with some applications for authentication codes by Ogata, Kurosawa, Stinson and Saido. The existence of SBDs has been discussed through direct and recursive constructions in literature. In this paper, we focus on the property of resolvability in a SBD, and two improved bounds for the number of blocks in SBDs with resolvability are presented. Furthermore, some equivalence between SBDs with resolvability and other combinatorial designs are provided. Finally existence results of some classes of SBDs with resolvability are shown by use of recursive constructions and available results on other combinatorial structures.

  • Continuous flattening of α-trapezoidal polyhedra

    It was proved that any orthogonal polyhedron is continuously flattened by using a property of a rhombus. We investigated the method precisely, and found that there are infinitely many ways to flatten such polyhedra. We prove that the infimum of the area of moving creases is zero for α-trapezoidal polyhedra, which is a generalization of semi-orthogonal polyhedra. Also we prove that, for any integer n, there exists a continuous flattening motion whose area of moving creases is arbitrarily small for any n-gonal pyramid with a circumscribed base and a top vertex being just above the incenter of the base. As a by-product we provide a continuous flattening motion whose area of moving creases is arbitrarily small for more general types of polyhedra.

  • Global Temperature-Quest for Models with Superior Fitting

    The record on the data on global annual average temperature over the last thirty two years presents a continuous increase (though very mild) in temperature over years and this warming of the globe is, indeed, a matter of deepest concern to all of us at the moment. It is required to develop appropriate measures to contain the temperature-rise and when such measures (which perceptibly and most satisfactorily address the problem) are created, it is our mandate to implement those holistically in order to save the human civilization from a perilous future. Global temperature models expose the inherent trend existing in the temperature-record. A literature-survey on modelling of global temperature reveals the following articles, Pal and Pal, 2011, Pal et al. (2013) and Pal et al. (2014), wherein the precision levels (in terms of R2 values) of the models did not exceed 0.89.This paper presents superior global annual average temperature models (parametric based on mathematical functions) with precision levels (in terms of R2 values) varying in the range, 0.875 to 0.940.

    In this article, the existence of additive BIB designs is discussed with direct and recursive constructions, together with investigation of a property of resolvability. Such designs can be used to construct infinite families of BIB designs. In particular, we obtain a series of B(s(n), ts(m), lambda t(ts(m) - 1)(s(n-m) - 1)/[2(s(m) - 1)]) for any positive integer lambda, such that s(n)(s(n) - 1)lambda 0 (mod s(m) (s(m) - 1)) and for any positive integer t with 2 <= t <= s(n-m), where s is an odd prime power. Connections between additive BIB designs and other combinatorial objects such as multiply nested designs and perpendicular arrays are discussed.     For a balanced incomplete block (BIB) design, the following problem is considered: Find s different incidence matrices of the BIB design such that (i) for 1 <= t <= s - 1, sums of any t different incidence matrices yield BIB designs and (ii) the sum of all s different incidence matrices becomes a matrix all of whose elements are one. In this paper, we show general results and present four series of such BIB designs with examples of other three BIB designs.
