Proceedings of the Technical Committee on Speech Communication, Volume:3, Number:2, First page:n/a, Feb. 2023
Our aim was to understand the scientific features of emotional expressions in Japanese by native and non-native speakers. Specifically, this study focused on how non-native speakers recognize the emotional expression of native speakers and vice versa. As a first attempt, the present study analyzed various emotional expressions using the one-word utterance “n” by young female native Japanese speakers. Based on the preliminary survey, the results of the analysis showed three types of F0 dynamic patterns in “n.” Positive and agreeable emotions of “n” exhibited the “Rise and Fall” pattern, negative emotions of “n”exhibited the “Gradual Fall” pattern, whereas doubtful emotions of “n” exhibited the “Rise” pattern. The minimum frequency of F0 did not considerably differ in all these emotions, whereas the maximum frequency of F0 was high for all emotions except negative emotions. These results suggest that the F0 movement may be related to emotional expression, that is, positive and negative.

Aiming at a better understanding of L2 learning problems resulting from L1 and L2 timing control differences, we analyzed the differences in generation of geminate and singleton consonants which has been known to be a L2 learning problem between Japanese natives and Chinese learners. These differences were analyzed by applying tempo normalization to raw segmental duration measurements. To get a systematic understanding of L2 learners' time control characteristics, speech data of learners with different proficiency and syllable structures was employed. Analyses clearly showed that (1) timing control differences between natives and L2 learners gradually decrease as the learners language proficiency increases, (2) the differences between natives and L2 speakers show big variations depending on the syllable structure and (3) timing control differences can be understood based on timing unit differences between morae and syllables. Based on those findings, preliminary results of a novel training method that provides additional moraic context to isolated speech samples are being presented and showed the effectiveness.

To establish an effective training paradigm for a computer-assisted language learning system that enables non-native learners to exploit native-like perceptual cues for identifying length contrasts, e.g., consonant length, in the Japanese language (hereafter, Japanese length contrast), two experiments were conducted to investigate the identification accuracies of native Korean listeners before and after intensive perceptual training. The first experiment assessed the perceptual characteristics that native Korean listeners show when identifying the length contrast in the face of variation in speaking rate. The results suggested that native Korean listeners identify length contrasts by relying on a fixed-length criterion instead of adapting to changes in speaking rate. Also, Korean listeners showed a noticeable bias toward geminate responses for all speaking rates, with a stronger bias for slower speaking rates. The second experiment was based on these perceptual characteristics of Korean listeners. It investigated the extent to which intensive training helps improve listeners' ability to identify Japanese length contrast and to examine whether greater stimulus variability during training leads to more robust training effects. The overall results showed that the perceptual training improved Korean listeners' ability to perceive consonant length contrast. Moreover, misidentification of geminates decreased at post-test. However, the effect of training did not differ greatly between conditions of high stimulus variability during training (training with three speaking rates) and low stimulus variability (training with a single speaking rate). Training also did not generalize to perception of untrained contrast type (vowel length contrast). These results suggest that while perceptual training helps Korean learners learn a new, difficult-to-learn L2 phonemic length contrast, it is still difficult for learners to acquire native-like perceptual criteria.

Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics, Volume:19, 2013, [Reviewed]
Aiming at an objective evaluation of second language (L2) learner's Japanese timing control, this study proposes an objective measure to predict a subjective measure of L2 speakers' production given by Japanese native evaluators from the view point of goodness of production. The focus here is on phonemic length contrast, e.g., /kako/ "the past" versus /kakko/ "parentheses" and /kaze/ "wind" versus /kaze:/ "taxation" which is difficult for L2 learners particularly when incorporated with speaking rates. In this present study proposed an objective measure using a vowel onset time marker as a key perceptual and psychoacoustic marker to normalize speaking rate variations. The proposed new measure reflects tempo normalization between L2 learners by dividing the proficiency of mora-timing control in production. The experimental results show that both vowel length contrast and consonant length contrast have a significantly higher correlation with the subjective evaluation score in which the coefficient was stable than using a simple duration difference measure. These results suggest that applying the psychoacoustic parameters would be effective to build up an objective evaluation of L2 learners. © 2013 Acoustical Society of America.

Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics, Volume:19, 2013, [Reviewed]
Perception of phonemic length contrasts in Japanese is difficult for non-native listeners. To better understand the source of this difficulty, the present study investigated native Korean listeners' perception of consonant length contrasts at different speaking rates. Stimuli were created by modifying the duration of the second consonant of /ereC:e/along a continuum to /ereCe/, where C was /k/ or /s/. The base words were spoken by a professionally trained native Japanese speaker with a carrier sentence at three rates, fast, normal, slow. Twenty four native Korean and twelve native Japanese listeners participated in a perception test. They listened to one of the created stimuli and identified whether the second consonant was singleton or geminate. Results show that even though Korean listeners' perceptual boundary position between singleton and geminate consonants shifted according to speaking rate in a similar manner as the natives, their boundary width was more variable and larger than native listeners at all speaking rates. These results suggest that Korean listeners have ambiguous criteria for phonemic length contrasts. Results discussed that the perceptual similarity between intervocalic consonant of Korean and geminate consonant of Japanese. © 2013 Acoustical Society of America.

This study investigated how Japanese learners of Japanese as a second language learn pronunciation in Japanese using a shadowing application, with a focus on the effect of shadowing on improving intonation and accent specifically. Thirty-eight participants used a shadowing application individually without explicit instruction. After the experiment, a broad range of F0 movements were observed in participants' speech, which suggests that the characteristics of Japanese intonation (e.g. henoji intonation) can be learned through shadowing.

The present paper reports an investigation into the characteristics of native Korean listeners' identification of geminate and singleton consonants in Japanese. The aim was to understand L2 learners' identification of error patterns and to analyze the cause of identification errors, The investigation especially focused on the relationship between geminate insertion and Korean intervocalic tense consonants. As a first step in this study the first experiment assessed the perceptual criteria that non-native listeners use to identify length contrasts, and these included variations in speaking rate. Results of this experiment indicated that non-native listeners identify length contrast by relying on a fixed-length criterion instead of adapting to speaking rate variation. Specifically, Korean listeners showed a bias toward geminate responses for all speaking rates, although the bias tended to be stronger for a slower speaking rate. This tendency was called the geminate insertion phenomenon. This result suggests that the geminate insertion phenomena are related to the Korean phonological system. Both acoustic and psycho-acoustical factors were used to analyze the characteristics of Korean intervocalic tense consonants. The present study focused on an enpenthetic's' in Korean phonology. The results indicated that the Korean intervocalic tense consonants have assimilated with the Japanese geminate consonants. However, this assimilation may possibly be affected by the perception of volume. These results suggest that 'loudness' is likely to be a crucial factor in understanding the Korean native listeners' mis-identification of Japanese geminate consonants.

This paper reports research investigating the influence of adjacent phonemes on the perception of Japanese geminate (/sokuon/) and singleton stops. Three questions were examined: 1) What is the relationship between the length of the prior vowel and the perceptual categorization of the geminate/singleton stop? 2) What is the relationship between the prior consonant and the perceptual categorization of the geminate/singleton stop? 3) What are the differences, if any, between the perceptual categorization of Korean learners of Japanese and native speakers? The results of this study demonstrated that there was a compensation effect observed in the perceptual boundaries when the prior vowel was shortened. These results indicate a possibility that the perceptual units of geminate/singleton stops are VC units. It was also determined that the consonant prior to the geminate/singleton stop affected perceptual categorization by native speakers. However, the results of this study suggest that further investigation is necessary before any conclusions can be drawn. Finally, it was determined that native speakers and Korean learners perceive the geminate/singleton stop as part of a VC unit. However, the position of the perceptual boundary is different. This difference is possibly related to compensation.

This paper reports research investigating the perception of Japanese geminate (/sokuon/)/singleton stops by both Korean learners of the language and native speakers by acoustic analysis. Based on this, three questions were examined : 1) What influence, if any, does the length of the vowel prior to the geminate/singleton stop have on the perceptual boundaries of Japanese native speakers and learners? 2) When the length of the prior vowel is shortened, in what way does this influence the perceptual boundaries? 3) Are the perceptual boundaries influenced differently if the geminate/singleton stop is at the word level or the sentence level (the context)? The results of this study demonstrated that there was a difference in the perception of geminate/singleton perceptual boundaries between Japanese native speakers and Korean learners. In particular, there was a compensation effect observed in the perceptual boundaries when the prior vowel was shortened. Furthermore, it was determined that this compensation effect was influenced by the type of vowel, and the first language of the participants, however, the greatest influence was the context.

Korean listeners show a perceptual bias toward geminate consonants when listening to Japanese. To investigate the reason for the bias toward geminates, perception experiments were conducted. Both stimuli were created by modifying the duration of the second consonant of the nonword “erete” along a continuum. Listeners participated in a single-stimulus, two-alternative forced-choice identification task. Results suggest that Japanese listeners’ identification boundaries systematically shifted due to changes in speaking rate when the stimuli were in the context of a sentence with mixed rates of presentation. Results of Korean native listeners’ boundaries position show that the boundaries of “lenis” and “fortis” in Korea were shorter end than the boundaries of “singleton” and “geminate” in Japanese. Korean listeners’ boundaries shift toward lenis consonants when identifying Japanese stop consonants.

In order to contribute to learners who learn Japanese as a second language, characteristics related to perception and learning of temporal elements of speech typified by speech rhythms were obtained by empirical methods. This improved the accuracy in objective evaluation using a mathematical model that quantitatively calculates the naturalness of the temporal structures of a given utterance. The results are applicable to wide range of practical usages. For learners of Japanese, for instance, it helps to objectively evaluate their own speech, and for native speakers, it helps to quantitatively evaluate the quality and quantity of communication by analysing given spontaneous conversation from the temporal aspect.

Speech generation and perception characteristics have been quantitatively analyzed using the second language (L2) speech data aiming at scientific understanding of them and their applications to L2 education. Using Asian L2 English speech corpus, timing control differences between natives and learners were quantitatively analyzed at Inter Stress Intervals defined as the durations between succeeding stressed syllables. Moreover, by analyzing L2 speech data with Japanese geminate/singleton consonants, neighboring segmental loudness effect on segmental duration perception has been commonly observed in speakers with different L1s. In addition, control differences between Japanese mora-timing and Chinese syllable-timing has been clearly observed in L2 Japanese speech. An experimental L2 speech timing training by enforcing Japanese mora-timing showed the remarkable improvements of L2 learners in the contrastive generation of Japanese geminate/singleton consonants.

This project investigated how various prosodic units such as moras and syllables affect production and perception of spoken language, and how they are encoded in the mental lexicon. Results showed that Japanese listeners' perception of syllables in spoken English words is not affected by the presence of katakana loanwords that diverge prosodically from the source words. Also, second-language learners' perception of length contrasts in Japanese improves to some extent as a result of perceptual training and language experience, but they have difficulty approaching native-like performance. Finally, the functional load of phonemes, which measures how much each phoneme contributes to distinguishing words, was found to be more useful when it is defined with reference to the prosodic structure of words such as their word accent pattern. Altogether, these results suggest that prosodic units are psychologically real and critically affect perception and production of spoken language.

hrough a series of empirical studies, the present project proposed a model that quantitatively estimates human evaluation of given speech data regarding naturalness or fluency. This model made possible the objective evaluation of a non-native accented voice. These results can contribute to the promotion of effectiveness of so-called computer-assisted language learning/testing framework by providing an element of automatic fluency evaluation.
