In this paper, we focus on a quantitative analysis of stylistic differences using features which represent local and global forms of dependency trees. We investigate differences between two styles of spoken Japanese ("Simulated Public Speaking (SPS)" and "Academic Presentation Speech (APS)," which are included in Corpus of Spoken Japanese). The results show that the forms of dependency trees are" tall and narrow" in APS and "low and wide" in SPS, and this demonstrates the fact that the proposed features, while effectively depicting distinct tendencies, arise from different styles.

Properly representing image structure is a major problem faced in developing a computer vision system. This paper proposes a concise descriptor called the shape operator for describing image structure. We first consider an image function as a surface, then establish the shape operator by utilizing surface curvatures. The shape operator can give rich, detailed descriptions in terms of topographical shapes and has invariance properties which are required in computer vision systems. We show usefulness of the shape operator with a texture classification application. Experimental results indicate that the shape operator gives a representation that is sufficiently detailed for characterizing texture images. In particular, it can satisfactorily mitigate the adverse effects of variations in lighting.

A method to estimate viewpoint of a user from the image of singular marker put on the head is proposed. Using the moment features which represents non-local feature of image, such as the gravity center or the breadth, our method estimate viewpoint of a user by three layered neural network. Experimental result shows that our method has good performance.

In this paper, we propose a method to estimate posture of human head, which is suitable for constructing vision-based human interface. By the proposed method, the position and the direction of the head are estimated from the image of singular marker put on the head of a user. As the feature, moments of image up to second degree are used. Posture is estimated by estimation system which consists of observation model based on local analysis and compensation function. Our method has the following characteristics important for posture estimation method as an element of general use human interfaces. Firstly, it does not constrain user, since it is vision based method. Secondly, a user only have to put singular marker on the top of the head, and thus easily puts on and takes off the marker. Thirdly, because the features to represent the marker are moments up to second degree, we can expect considerable robustness to noise and less computational cost. The experimental results shows validity of our method.

Deals with a hierarchical description of digital grayscale images based on non-local structural features, called image dipoles. An image dipole is defined to be a region whose lines of slope emanate from the same maximum, and reach the same minimum. Incorporating an image dipole based representation of an image into a scale-space filtering, we propose in this paper a hierarchical image dipole description of the image. The proposed description consists of image dipole networks of some scales, and linking of image dipoles across the scales such that the description contains all local transformations of the image dipole network in the scale-space. © 1996 IEEE.

In this paper, we investigate the mathematical model of detection of an object by visual system. We treat the problem as the estimation of position of objects. Given the probabilistic distribution of position of objects, the proposed model controls the viewpoint and visual field so that estimation error is minimized.

We propose a new coding scheme of still image for retrieving databases by means of expanding the Progressive JPEG coding. The scheme can display the image more efficiently than the conventional scheme such as the Progressive JPEG coding. At first, we get information about stimuli in the image, which is important for early stage in the human visual system. And then, we set the order of priority of sub-blocks in order to give priority to the sub-blocks which have remarkable information in the image. The experimental results of applying this scheme to the real image of persons are given, and they show that the scheme is useful for early understandings at the situations of retrieving demanded images from image databases.

A proper representation of image structure is a primary problem faced in developing an image understanding system. Previous studies concerning this context were done by D. Marr[1],R.M. Haralick et al.[2],etc. From a differential geometry viewpoint, we have proposed a descriptor called the shape operator for describing image structure[3]. It gives rich details in terms of topographical shapes and has the interesting invariance properties. In this paper, we illustrate its usefulness as a pre-processing operator in texture classification application.

This paper proposes the tracking system based on the local moment, in which the idea of the viewpoint and the visual field corresponding to local area of an image is introduced. Using local moment with the optimal viewpoint and visual field, the system estimates the target based on two models of the scene (the alternative models): the one assuming only the target object and the other assuming the target and the obstacle. The system can switch from one model to another by the decision criterion and tracks the target by controlling the parameters of the local moment in accordance with estimated values. By the two experiments the validity of the estimation by the alternative models is shown.

In the previous work, we have proposed a methodology to segment digital grayscale images into image dipoles. An image dipole is a region enclosed by lines of slope which are drawn from saddles to maxima, and those from saddles to minima. In this article, we convert an image dipole segmentation result into the form of network which is more accessible to algorithms in real applications.

In many scientific and technical endeavors, a 3-D object must be reconstructed from scattered range data. Raw range data are hard to be employed for 3-D display in realtime because the number of them is too enormous. Although triangular patch representations proposed in traditional methods up till now are used for reconstructing a 3-D object, they take too many patches. In this paper, generation of lattice points from scattered range data by re-sampling method is proposed. Using the proposed method, fewer lattice points and patches on 3-D object surface can be obtained for 3-D object modeling.

This report discusses an object tracking system using focus of attention. By setting a viewpoint close to a target object, and choosing a breadth of visual field to certain area, complexity of tracking task can be reduced, and robustness of tracking may increased. In our approach, visual field is chosen to be the optimal while tracking. The size and the position of the object is estimated using model of image including the target and noise, and observation of image accompanied by focus of attention is expressed by inner product between image and a set of functions consisting of Gaussian function and its partial derivatives. Optimality of visual field is evaluated by error variance of estimated object position, based on minimum-variance estimate. A tracking example by real scene is also reported.

In this paper, a new method for extracting regions called Gaussian Segmentation is proposed. The basic idea of which is to extract regions containing locally concentrated stimuli. The visual system of human being can extract an object from the image even if no prior information about the object is available. In this research, Gaussian Segmentation is formalized as a problem to minimize an estimating function locally. And we provide two kinds of method, Local Searching and Dynamic searching, to seek a local solution of the estimating function in parameter space. Finally, the availability of this method is shown by experiments using a functional image and a real image.

In this paper,we propose a new character segmentation based on a hill-valley structure of blurred document images. In general, any part of charaters usually contains many stroke segments;while backgrounds or space between characters contain weaker stroke densities.Since a grey scale image obtained from blurring the image by a Gaussian kernel can represent a variation of stroke densities of charaters,we can estimated the position of all characters in the image by using infomation from their stroke densities. As an experiment,we do a segmention of characters of an address in postal cards to clarify the validity of our technique.

Head posture estimation is carried out in real-time by processing image of an oval marker put on user's head. Because the oval marker is attached on a cap, a user can put on the marker easily and naturally by just wearing the cap. Our method gives natural feeling to a user because the direction of scrolling has good consistency to user's direction of attention. As the feature, moments of image up to second degree are used. Posture is estimated by estimation system which consists of observation model based on local analysis and compensation function. Our method has the following characteristics. Firstly, it does not constrain user. Secondly, a user only have to put singular marker on the top of the head, and thus easily puts on and takes off the marker. - Formation of Mathematical Model for Object Tracking Using Local Moment

There are two indispensable features to realize vision-based human interface ; robustness under general environment and real time ability under restricted hardware resource. Conventionally, those features are thought to be trade-off. However, visual system of animals can achieve simple tasks sufficient for constructing human interface with restricted resource and considerable robustness. We hypothesize that the reasons why visual system of animal is successful in alleviating those trade-offs are to use global feature of restricted area and layered structure of sensory system.
The first year of the research plan, we constructed visual models of three layers of tasks ; discovering, tracking and recognizing thetarget.
As the global feature of restricted area, local moment, moment feature of image weighted by Gaussian function, is introduced. Since the local moment has the capability to suppress unnecessary information outside of the area, it can be applied effectively to an image containing much noises and obstacle objects. Comparing with the ordinary moment, computational cost of the local moment is fairly small and can be easily applied to real-time system.
This year, we developed two applications of those models. The first one is a pointing device based on tracking and recognizing user's hand. Without putting any marker-like reference points on a hand, a user can point at any position on the screen by moving the hand, and can manipulate objects on the screen in several ways. Another application is head posture estimation method using an oval marker attached on user's head. As the feature, moments of image up tosecond degree are used.

Many input devices for computers have been proposed, keyboards are used for symbolic information and mice for two dimensional one.
The effect of input in a virtual environment must be appealed to the sense organs because humans perceive the outside world from the five senses in real world.
Important perceptual information while handling 3D objects is obtained from vision, haptic sensation, auditory sense, etc.
The handling of three dimensional(3D) objects in a virtual environment requires an efficient input device which can handle these virtual objects as humans handle objects in real world.
In this study, we proposed a 3D spatial interface device using strings, pulleys, and motors.
The position of an operator's fingertip is measured by the lengths of the strings that are connected with a finger cap.
The strings tensed by motors make force sensations.
The operator can easily wear the cap, and move his/her fingers without restraint.
We constructed a virtual environment for pick-and-place tasks with the device and 3D computer graphics.
The operator could both see and feel the results of his/her hand motions in a very natural way.

Two-handed interactions are efficient to design a three dimensional (3D) object, hence a two-handed spatial interface device must facilitate such a design process in a virtual environment. In order to realize a virtual environment in which an operator can use his/her hands efficiently, it is necessary to implement a virtual reality system that is suitable to human's ability of sensory integration. We ca unconsciously integrate many kinds of sensory information, e.g.visual and kinesthetic sensation.
This project was about constructing a virtual work space for performing any tasks by two-handed-input. We use a three dimension spatial interface device that allows users to handle virtual objects directly by free hands and be feel-able some physical properties of virt object : for example, weight of virtual objects when they are held, force that is the reaction from virtual objects when users touch them force from a collision of two virtual objects which users can feel in some operations such as placing one virtual object onto another one.
We have shown some evidences about force feedback sensation, and perceptual integration between kinesthetic and visual sensat that can encourage users to accomplish any tasks by cooperation between both hands in natural manner.
