[Reviewed]The Pacopampa site, located in the northern highlands of Peru, is an archeological site belonging to the Formative Period (2500 BC-0 AD). The purposes of this Study are to observe and describe the human skeletal remains from the Pacopampa site, to estimate the sex and age-at-death of each individual, and finally to diagnose morphological traits and skeletal disorders. The materials used here are 498 human skeleton parts. The sample comprises at least 18 individuals: eight subadult skeletons, eight adult skeletons, one skeleton aged 10-39 years, and one of unknown age. The age distribution (six of eight subadults were less than one year) suggests a high proportion of infants in the population. The sexual ratio of three adult males to four adult females indicates a skeletal population with hardly any sexual bias. A paleopathological examination revealed that the percentage of permanent teeth affected by dental caries was 9% (18/192). Two elderly females exhibit periodontal disease in both the maxillae and mandibles. This is the first Study to examine the lives and deaths of a Formative Period population from the perspective of bioarcheology.

Fourty seven human skeletons dating Formative Period (2,000 B. C. A. D 0) were recovered from the Kuntur Wasi, Loma Redonda, Huacaloma and Kolgitin sites in Cajamarca region, Peru. The artificial cranial deformities, which can be classiffied into the tabular erect type, were observed in nine skulls from these sites excepting the Kolgitin site. The dental caries was frequently found in the Kuntur Wasi people though less frequently than in the recent Peruvians. The facial morphology is not homogeneous, and the aristocratic features are found in some skulls from the Kuntur Wasi and Roma Ledonda sites. The sexual difference of estimated stature is great in the Kuntur Wasi and Huacaloma people. The squatting facets are present in all tali examined, suggesting that the inhabitants customarily sat in the squatting position or walked up and down rocky mountains.

In the north highlands of Peru, the emergence of power was recognized after 800 years, which is the latter half of the Formative Period (3000 BC to 1 AD) during which society was integrated by the ritual activities related to the ceremonial centers.
A multidisciplinary analysis of archaeological data such as architectures and excavated remains revealed that there are both cases in which collective and social memory held by groups were positively used and were not used in generating power.
Furthermore, when using social memory, it was also found that leaders adopted different power generation strategies depending on the region, such as incorporating the landscape around the ceremonial centers, and unique rituals. In this way, we were able to open a new frontier to Andean archaeological studies, which has been discussing the relationship between the ceremonial centers only by the similarities and differences of the architectural characteristics and the excavated remains.

We have focused on the Formative Period (B.C.3000-A.D.1) in Andean Civilization. We carried out excavations at the Pacopampa archaeological site located in the northern highlands of Peru. Excavated materials were analyzed by an interdisciplinary team. We found that social leaders with ideological characteristics emerged already by around B.C. 800. The result presents an exact contrast to conventional theory in which economic factors such as the control of surplus have been regarded as the most likely cause for the emergence of power.
We also confirmed that regional diversity existed during the formation process and has a role in the foundation of power in Andean Civilization. It is possible that the model developed during this project can also be applied to the analysis of other ancient civilizations in the world. The project offers a new approach for studies on ancient civilization - studies that have generally taken historical materialism as a starting point for analysis.

This study aims to clarify the formation of power in the Andean Civilization of South America through the excavations of the ceremonial center (Pacopampa archaeological site in the north highlands of Peru) and the analysis of the archaeological remains.
The chronology of the Pacopampa site was reworked into Phase I (B.C.1200-B.C.800) and Phase II (B.C.800-B.C.500) by our team, and it turned out that in the Phase I social inequality was not found, and the religious activities (construction of temples and their renovation) were based on voluntary participation by the community's member, while in the Phase II the person of power appeared, and the main source of his/her power depended on the production of metal and their distributions.

The development of the early Andean civilization should be considered in the framework of the Formative Period which started at Caral where the initial step for urbanization could be seen. The final goal of this peculiar process was a unique society with a large temple such as Kuntur Wasi. The new chronology of the Formative Period is divided as follows ; Initial (3000BC-1800), Early (1800-1200), Middle (1200-800), Late (800-250) and Final (250-50BC).

1. The chronology of Kuntur Wasi and its related area was established: Middle Formative 2; Idolo (950-800BC.), Late Formative 1; Kuntur Wasi (800-550BC.), Late Formative 2; Copa (550-250BC.), Final Formative; Sotera (250-50BC.).
2. The architectural plans were composed into 9 phases, 3D model of the Kuntur Wasi Temple was completed and the changes of the temple structure through phases were clarified.
3. Reconsideration of the excavation data from Kuntur Wasi site was performed.
(1) The analysis of pottery was completed by the full text of descriptions of 61 types with many photographs and figures.
(2) Detailed artifact lists were completed containing the information of type classifications, measurements, materials, and photographic data.
(3) Zooarchaeological analysis clarified the animal resource utilization and introduction process of the livestock animals (camelid).
4. All the data from Kuntur Wasi were changed into the electronic files. The archaeological database of Kuntur Wasi site was created. The list of contents, sample pages, and some results of analysis are opened by the public version.
5. Systematic archaeological investigations were conducted in the related regions of Kuntur Wasi, such as Jequetepeque Valley, Cajamarca Basin and Pacopampa Area. The developmental process and social interactions of each society and the role of Kuntur Wasi Temple, in the formation of Andean Civilization were clarified.
6. The temple functioned as the core for social integration during the Formative Period in the Andes, and it became the motive power of civilization formation. As a goal, multi-regional temple, Kuntur Wasi appeared. Although it promoted the interaction and mobility of many local societies, the large-scale society which unifies a large domain did not produce. The Formative society collapsed in 250 BC. There is a discontinuous period of hundreds of years until the first kingdom society. That is, the first Andean state society did not developed directly from the Formative society.

1. We excavated the archaeological site Kuntur Wasi, located in the north highland of Peru, which was the main focus of our research. Kuntur Wasi had been known as one of the most important temple or ceremonial center in the Formative Period of Andean Prehistory. After the three seasons of intensive excavations, we can establish the chronology of Kuntur Wasi ; Idolo Phase (1100-800 BC.), Kuntur Wasi Phase (800-500 BC.), Copa Phase (500-250 BC.), Sotera Phase (250-50 BC.). Basic data for chronology are architectural context and associated pottery. At least nine construction phases of architecture were identified. The pottery of Kuntur Wasi was classified into 61 types. Now principal architectural arrangement of the Temple of Kuntur Wasi was ascertained and we confirmed the process of construction in detail.
2. We carried out a general survey in the area of coastal valleys to get data of contemporaneous temple sites with Kuntur Wasi that was located in the highland. In the result of this survey we selected Limoncarro and excavated it. Our intensive excavations of two seasons revealed that Temple of Limoncarro was constructed in two times, and the late temple was associated with Cupisnique pottery, which could be related to Kuntur Wasi Phase. Also we discovered seven reliefs representing mythological animals on the wall of the late temple.
3. We excavated the archaeological site Tantalica, located on the top of the hill near Kuntur Wasi during two seasons. The result of our studies revealed that Tantarica was not contemporaneous with Kuntur Wasi, but was an unique settlement of the Kingdom of Cuismanc, which was under the control of Inca in the 15th century.
4. We carried out a general survey in the Basin of Cajamarca for the purpose of comparative study with Kuntur Wasi, and got some important data for pottery production.
5. For the preliminary study of modern social development implementing at the Kuntur Wasi village, we arranged and registered bulky documents about the Kuntur Wasi, which had been kept in the Kuntur Wasi Museum and the Association Kuntur Wasi, voluntary association of local villagers.

1. We conducted the measurement. of the whole area to complete the topographic map. With the knowledge about the arrangement of the architecture, we understood the structure of Kuntur Wasi Temple.
2. We conducted excavations in three zones on the main platform, and got the following new data.
(1)Zone A : We confirmed the configuration of the platform-plaza complex in the Kuntur Wasi Period, the 2nd period of this site. We got many detailed data about the architecture of the Copa Period, the 3rd period, such as platforms, plazas, stairways, passages and atrium. We confirmed three construction phases in the Kuntur Wasi Period, and also three phases in the Copa Period.
(2)Zone B : We grasped the context of the special tomb, in which we had discovered some gold artifacts in 1997. It was confirmed that this tomb was buried at the beginning of the 1st. construction phase in the Kuntur Wasi Period.
(3)Zone C : We investigated the platform-plaza complex of the 1st period of this site, Idolo Period. The oldest architecture was reconstructed three tines, and we could grasp the process of architecturein detail. Here, two special tombs of the Copa Period were discovered, in which some offerings of pottery vessels were contained.
3. Gold artifacts from 4 tombs discovered in 1996 and 1997 were made analyses such as the measurement and observation, and were taken in the photograph to make the inventory.
4. Based on the distribution of the artifacts in the Temple, we got some interesting data about the material culture and the temple.

Archaeological excavatios were carried out at two sites, Kuntur Wasi and Maichil, in the Cajamarca region, northern Peru. At Kuntur Wasi, continuing the earlier works, the excavation uncovered : (1) the earliest temple of the Idolo phase (1200-800BC) which experienced the renewal three times ; (2) a platform of the Kuntur Wasi phase (800-500BC) with a tomb possibly of a priestassociated with several gold objects like a crown, ear ornaments, and other objects ; (3) a platform complex of the Copa phase (500-250BC) with relief decoration, stairways on the north face, and a group of small rooms posssibly for storage.
At Maichil, a small site of artificial mound near Kuntur Wasi, two trenches were excavated to clarify the stratigraphy of the site. It was revealed that the remains of the Formative period had been thrown away by later activities of Cajamarca culture, although it is certain that the earliest occupation was aroud 1500BC.
In sum, the research is deepening our knowledge of the relationship between temples and society during the beginning of Andean civilization and the role of the priests during that process.

The aim of this research project is to investigate and analyze the process of the revitalization of local communities by the local people.
In the first year, we carried out library research of the preceding studies on this theme in anthropology and sociology and discussed theoretical framework for this research. In the second year, each investigator made some field studies mainly in Niigata : collecting material of local government and tourism related enterprises of his own field, analyzing them and interviewing the local government officials and the local people concerned.
Based on the results of each investigation, we wrote up a final report. The contents of this report are as follows : examining the theories in 'cultural studies, ' it is suggested that communication including tourism is deeply involved in political issues and discussing discourses on tourism ; our discussion about theoretical issues confirmed that sociology of media should be indispensable as the theoretical framework for this kind study ; as for case studies, from the analyzes of the policy of touristic development and the relationships between traditional culture and local museum in Ryotsu, either tourism or the local museum plays an important role in engendering local identity ; the discourse analysis on Huis-ten-bosch theme park shows its particular space-time structure ; it is also suggestd the possibilities of local independency from the central government through the analyzes of the participations of local residents in politics concerning the issue of the construction of a nuclear power plant in Maki town and the struggle of meaning through discourses concerning "development" and "tradition" in Bali.

The excavations were carried out at Kuntur Wasi, an archaeological site of the Formative period in the Department of Cajamarca in northern Peru. The principal aime of this project was to investigate the southern part of the main platform of this site.
The results are as the followings :
1.The Formative period at Kuntur Wasi was divided into four phases : the Idolo phase, 1100-700B.C. ; the Kuntur Wasi phase, 700-450B.C. ; the Copa phase, 450-250B.C. ; the Sotera phase, 250-50B.C.
2.Seven subphases (Idolo-1,2, Kuntur Wasi, Copa-1,2,3,4) of construction activities were identified in the southern part of the main platform.
3.The three-stepped retaining wall and a staircase were unearthed in the southwestern end of the main platform.
4.Many stone-lined canals were found in the Copa phase. This hydraulic system appears to have been built primalily for ceremonial activities.
5.Two stone sculptures were discovered. One sculpture was found in situ at the final step of the northwestern staircase of the central plaza.
6.A large amount of sherds of the Idolo phase were collected from the southern part of the main platform.
