  This paper illustrates that the modern agriculture in French Jura has developed through the "Jurassian model", run by family- and community-based farms without intensification. A case study of the village F is presented and how family-based farms adopt this model and how the model becomes a social consensus is examined.
  Milk production in Jura is strongly conditioned by nuclear family (as unit of production), kinship relations (for land transaction), and cooperation with community members. The analysis of village conflicts and family conversations on farm management shows that these conditions influence people's decision making processes over farming, and that people constantly affirm their family and economic values through such processes. The Jurassian farming model becomes established through farmers' relationships and daily discussions with neighbors and kinsmen who share the farming experience and values. Family ties significantly contribute to the increased economic efficiency of the farm, and it consequently leads farmers to adopt the model. The paper concludes that the particular local conditions of Jura region lead its villagers to accept the Jurassian model-based farming as a social consensus due to its economic efficiency.

• イスラーム原理主義紛争の背後にある問題：西アフリカとフィリピンの紛争

  現在、「イスラーム原理主義」がしばしば、世界各地の紛争の原因の一つとして報道されてる。しかしイスラームは本来、寛容な宗教であり、このような報道にはイスラームに関する誤解や単純化が見られる。しかもこれらの紛争は、実は宗教が原因で起きたものでもない。実際、紛争に便乗する「イスラーム戦士」たちは、イスラームを知らないことも多い。ここでは紛争の実態を、西アフリカとフィリピンの例で見てみたい。西アフリカでは、１０世紀以上も昔から長距離のサハラ横断交易を支えてきた遊牧民が紛争の主役であるが、彼らが作り上げた交易ネットワークは、多くの人々を相互扶助のネットワークで結び付け、イスラーム商人の活動を活性化した。しかし奴隷交易、植民地支配、そして近代国家の建設がこのネットワークを歪め、遊牧民から生活の場を奪い、それが現在の紛争に繋がっている。一方、東南アジアでも中世以来、長距離交易をイスラーム商人が担い、交易路上の各地にイスラーム国家が作られ、フィリピン南部ではこうして生まれたイスラーム王国が、植民地政府や近代国家の権力が及ばないところで繁栄してきた。しかし２０世紀になって彼らが近代国家体制に組み込まれると、彼らは土地を奪われ抑圧されていった。その上、こうして生まれた宗教紛争は、東南アジア的な国家のあり方と近代的な国家の在り方の齟齬により助長さた。このようにイスラーム原理主義に帰されてきた紛争は、実は宗教紛争ではなく、より本質的には、近代化の過程で歪められた社会の中で、生活の場を奪われた人々が生活を立て直そうとするところに、「原理主義」が結びついて生まれたものだった。

  In developing countries, donors often require large scale farming in order to develop agricultural productivity. However, in reality, large scale farming hardly function, and its rather small and middle sized family farming that adapt well the globalizing market economy. In Senegal, it is not realistic way to scale up the farming size of each farmer; it is rather family farming which becomes important in poverty alleviation in rural areas. Therefore, CNCR, a farmers' national association in Senegal, recommends protection and support for family farming. However, the possibility of family farming in this country is not unconditional. To a successful family faming it is needed to reduce financial risk by multiple income sources in the family as well as support from farmers' associations. However, it also needed that the farmers' association deals well market transactions amongst professional traders.

  In this study, we realized three case studies based on researches conducted among young Japanese working as volunteers in oversea assistance, volunteers in caring activities for helping disabled people, and university students pursuing sport training. We observed their activities, interviewed them on the activities and the pictures they took with their smartphones, and analysed pictures they up-loaded to SNS sites, blogs, or homepages, in order to compare the nature of physical body with the representation of bodies in photography. The analysis revealed that people cannot fully control their physical body while they can control bodies in photo images where bodies are showed in symbiosis. Pictures of students in voluntary activities explicit the ideal social relations in a particular way, and build up a public space specific to the photographic image. Therefore, the digital photography creates a new public space and contributes to reconstruct the public space in the physical world.

  This study aims at examining the social theory of French socialist Proudhon through comparison with the customary social practice of peasants in the socialist’s motherland, Franche-Comte. In fact, what Proudhon presented in his study on the property rights and the gratuitous credit was already in practice among these peasants in the first half of the 19th century, before the Proudhonien theorization. Furthermore, agriculture in Franche-Comte has been modernized through these ‘communitarian’ customs. Therefore, Proudhonien ideas are not something belonging to the past, but living in modern peasant economic strategies. Here, we find the possibility of the Proudhonien theory in the modern society.

  In their household livelihood strategies, Filipino farmers and fishermen mainly aim at reducing daily risks by one way or another. Their behavioural system for this purpose has its origin in precolonial social system of maritime Southeast Asia, based on its own "indic idea of power". This system indeed reduced risks in daily life in precolonial era. On the contrary, modern capitalist system, which the modernisation has introduced in this region, multiplies risks among them and fixes economic inequality.

  This research project aims to clarify the role of cooperatives in rural development, and the reason for their failure, through case studies realized in the Province of Bohol, the Philippines. Case studies are based on the combination of two different approaches : quantitative managerial research and qualitative extensive ethnographic research. The three-year project revealed following points.
  -Most of Boholano rural cooperatives focus on the credit activities. But most of them are facing to dissolution or to be inactive because of the lack of funding.
  -In reality, cooperative credit activities have a role to by-pass the governmental money to local people (members and staffs), but the people, regarding the cooperative resources as open-access resources, spend out the loan without paying back.
  -The people's behavior does not come from the lack of morality, but form lack of economic linkage between cooperative management strategy and people's household strategy. Their behavior pattern has its origin especially in their own property relatbns and social structure that are characteristic among the Malay people, with its history of even several centuries Historically, these people have not invested their money in the production, but spend it for their daily needs.
  -In this situation, cooperative movement based on the Western ideal is not always efficient for the purpose of poverty alleviation. We need a cooperative system with regard to the social nature of Southeastern Asia. In this respect, a key for an appropriate system is their resource control system.

  This research project focused, with special reference to France, on the various subjects such as the corporal technique of traditional craftsmen, the invention of tradition and the consciousness of ancient times, the religious mentality of contemporaries, the international pilgrimages' movements of modern world, the familial bondage of rural society and the folk customs, agriculture and forestry as livelihood, the festival culture and the modern representation of politics. In investigating these extremely divergent themes, we maintained the basic culture of Europe, as our core concept, in order to explore the new dimension of the understanding of Europe. The anthropologists and the historians who participated in this project could cooperate very well, in crossing their views each other. Before and after the 2 year consecutive field work, we held 10 debate sessions about our research problems. As for the understanding of the basic culture, we reached our mutual agreement on putting the more importance on the aspect of 'longue duree'(long period of time) than on that of the chronological old times. An anthropologist then proposed another aspect of the basic culture : cultural 'types' which can be extracted by the researchers. The historians among others expressed their doubts for this ahistorical concept. The concept was refined and with some restrictions added, but we could not arrive at the final agreement. This point remains to be solved in the future projects.
