Bulletin of the National Museum of Japanese History, Volume:148, First page:357, Last page:378, Dec. 2008, [Reviewed]
This paper unravels the forms of existence and characteristics of Early Modern Shinto priest organizations by making an intercomparative study of research on Shinto priest organizations amassed on individual regions. In light of the collection of earlier research that focuses on the relationship between furegashira (liaison officer) and fureshita (subordinate), the subject of this study is Shinto priest organizations with a furegashira or similar leader. Examples from Matsumae to Kyushu have been used for the purpose of this study. Many such Shinto priest organizations existed in each region, regardless of whether or not the region was under the control of a daimyo, and they developed in a variety of ways. It was possible for organizations in regions were dismembered to many feudal lords to exist relatively free from the authority of the feudal lord, which enabled the organization to retain the autonomy they had enjoyed since the previous lord. The organizing of Shinto priests by feudal lords who had comparatively large fiefdoms in some cases involved the establishment of a furegashira by the lord's authority, while in other cases an existing organization belonging to a shrine in a particular area that had been prominent since the Middle Ages. Even in the case of the former, it was common to depend on local Shinto priest organizations that had developed in counties and villages as subordinate organizations. Shinto priest organizations established by daimyo authority sometimes triggered strong resistance from Shinto priests taking service with shrines of equal standing to the shrine at which the furegashira served. There were even instances in which the organizations proceeded to split apart when such local authority disappeared or weakened. In the case of the latter, there was relatively little resistance from the same district, though conversely there were instances when the feudal lord's authority imposed limitations on the autonomous existence of the region's prominent shrines. The principle for the structuring of Shinto priest organizations was not simply based on the rationale of furegashira-fureshita, as their relationships were justified according to several rationale, including official rank, title and sankin (attendance at the region's prominent shrines). The formation of a group of Shinto priests based on sankin is thought to be a rather old form. Although the honjo (the head of the Sihnto school) controlled Shinto priests in the provinces by relying on such organizations, there were even instances when they fulfilled the role of aiding Shinto priests who sought to extricate themselves from the existing organization or established order.

This paper presents a tentative of the historical development of shrines in the Early Modern period. Shrines developed against a backdrop of the separation of warriors and peasants (heino bunri), surveys of land (kenchi) resulting in the organization of land by village, increased agricultural productivity, and the development of a commodity economy, all developments that marked a break from medieval practices. At the same time, some practices continued, such as the responsibility of feudal lords to execute "kami affairs" and the syncretization of Shinto with Buddhism. In the first half of the 17th century, unified authority saw the confiscation and re-assignment of shrine land, the building of Toshogu Shrine created a new religious order, and an integrated mechanism was put in place for Shinto shrines and priests. The disengagement of local lords due to the separation of warriors and peasants meant that shrine parishioners and worshippers had to run their local shrines, and the settling down of pilgrims such as yamabushi (mountain ascetics) clarified the duties of Shinto priests and initiated the fostering of a self-consciousness as Shinto priests. In the second half of the 17th century, Shinto shrines and priests had become increasingly organized and ordered accompanying the restoration of former shrines and the destruction of "inshi" (unauthorized shrines), and on the Yoshida family, was called "supreme head of shrine and kami affairs" was given the highest authority by the Tokugawa government. The Tokugawa government, which sought to justify itself in peaceful and stable times, flaunted its reverence for shrines that took charge of state rituals and festivals and for the ancestral deities of the Minamoto clan.In the first half of the 18th century, the commodity economy had developed to the extent that it encompassed the entire country, the value of shrine precincts and attached forest land had risen, and struggles of the right to control shrines began to intensify. As a result of the organization of land by village, manors were disbanded and ujigami shrines developed in the separated villages. Also, the Tokugawa government, with its evident financial difficulties, permitted the soliciting of contributions for the building and repair of temples and shrines, thus reducing its responsibility to execute" kami affairs" to a mere facade. In the second half of the 18th century, farmer priests emerged who ran shrines while maintaining their peasant status. The Shirakawa family, which as head of the Jingikan (Ministry of Shinto) extended their authority over Shinto priests by bringing these priests under their control, engaged in competition to acquire followers while opposing the Yoshida family, and shrines all over the country were constrained by imperial court authority amid a growing trend toward the restoration of past practices. At the same time, shrines became bases for a variety of cultural activities and local village culture. In the 19th century up until the Meiji Restoration, these trends continued to deepen, increase and expand qualitatively, quantitatively and spatially. The modern state denied shrines state prior to the Early Modern period, and this occurred within the context of the premise provided by the Early Modern period.

Journal of religious studies, Volume:78, Number:1, First page:71, Last page:94, 2004, [Reviewed]
The purpose of this study is to point out the validity of the Yoshida family's activity. The Yoshida family were court nobles who administered public Shinto affairs. They were in charge of Shinto priests from the 15th to the 19th century, even though they were assistance administrators of the Jingikan (the traditional office for public Shinto affairs). In the later 15th century, Yoshida Kanetomo organized his theory of Yoshida-Shinto as dominating another aspects of shinto, and proceeded to act in the name of "Jingi-Kanrei-Chojo" (Shinto-in-Chief). They often plotted to ensure their validity, such as falsifying their ancestry and fabricating official documents. This unjust validity was authorized by public power, and Kanetomo built Central Shrines, called "Saijosho" all over Japan. It is recognized that the Yoshida family constructed a new Shinto order in place of the traditional Shinto order. Kanetomo, however, had also cooperated in the rebuilding of the Jingikan, the center of the traditional Shinto system. This may seem contradictory, but the rational Kanetomo created the position "Jingi-Kanrei-Chojo," which was equal to the administrator of the Jingikan, and to orient itself to the Jingikan. The Yoshida family did not intend to abolish the traditional Shinto order, but to use it to promote their position. The Yoshida family's activity was thus based on a traditional validity.

This project aimed at creating a stable methodological basis of triangle comparative research of the histories of Japan, Korea and Vietnam, thorough the research of historiography aand the form of official documents. It planned multilingual publications too, so that our research can be positioned in the academia of these three countries and of the world. In terms of research objective and linguistic settings, this project will be novel in the field of East Asian Studies, and will be able to show a new viewpoint for global history research.
Four meetings was held in two years (the final one was an international symposium) to share the achievements of the members and collaborators. Multilingual introduction of this project was also conducted, in the symposium of the comparison between Korea and Vietnam (Hanoi, March 2017) for instance.

We reprinted various historical materials of the Edo period such as diaries which Nishinomiya Shrine in Hyogo prefecture, which was the base of the cult of Ebisu, possesses, and then clarified the role, activity, and change of its Shinto priests. Additionally, we clarified their geographical distribution and existence form by researching the historical materials to be related to shajin (Shinto priests of a lower rank) who were under the dominion of the Shrine of the whole country. Moreover, we fixed the future research system by, for instance, photographing the diaries of the modern times which the Shrine possess.

This research clarified the following points. We cannot solve the history of religion of Japan only by the research to Shintoism and Buddhism. Therefore, it is necessary to study the influence of Confucianism. The religion policy of the Meiji Restoration government was strongly affected by the influence of Confucianism. A comparative study with Vietnam is effective for the historical study of early modern Japan. In order to study the history of religion of Japan, We need to understand the history of religion of the kanji cultural sphere.

Sole emphasis on the elucidation of individual phenomena, which has been the received practice thus far, is insufficient for research in the Intellectual History of Early Modern Japanese Buddhism to progress to a new stage. Moving beyond a narrow focus on historically outstanding central events, there is now a need to deepen our understanding of trends which took place throughout the wider base of Japanese Buddhism: regional temples. The field of Intellectual History has thus far paid little attention to the intellectual environments in regional temples. This research project, in which a survey of documentary materials held in Tendai temples in Shiga Prefecture was carried out, has shed light on various aspects of those environments.

Confucianism had affected Japanese national religious ritual in early modern period. But in the case of Japan, Confucianism religious service was changed by ethnocentrism(shinto) and Buddhism. The same may be said of Ryukyu. On the other hand, Korea and Vietnam secured justification by performing Confucianism religious ritual like Chinese Empire. However, the national religious ritual of Korea and Vienam was also strongly affected by the influence of their ethnocentrism.

I made about 6,200 indexes of Ohiromazakki (the diary of Yoshida house that is the Shinto Head house) from 1699 to 1710, and worked on the fundamental investigations for the historical studies of early modern Shinto. Next, I clarified the activities of Usui Masatane who is an important person when we analyze the rivalry between Yoshida House and Shirakawa House and background of the foundation of Hassinden (the hall of eight deities) of Shirakawa House by Ichijyo Kaneka and Ichijyo Michika. Furthermore I brought out that the Shinto priests' activities of Shinbutsu bunri (the separation of Shinto and Buddhism) in the latter half of seventeenth century affected the explanation of the history of the festival.

There are two purposes of this study. First, we made a basic format of the indexes of "Ohiroma Zakki." which was the diary of the Yoshida Shinto House in the early modern period. And thereby we make it easy to use this document and develop the Shinto studies. (1) Secondly, We examined the trends and thoughts of the Shirakawa House that was against the Yoshida House or the Shinto priests staying in the local regions. (2)
About 1, we decided specifications of the digital conversion from the microfilms and converted about 15%, 24,000 sheets into digital. Following it, we made an input format, and input items sequentially. One index consists of items of the place name, the Shinto shrine name, the file number and the date. We have made 11,000 indexes for 100 books of "Ohiroma Zakki." However, I decided to add a person's name to the index, because we cannot grasp the trends of the persons who appeared quite frequently and were often omitted their Shinto shrine names. The work of adding names of the Shinto priests and linking the index to the digital data is the challenge of the future.
About 2, Hatakama examined historical materials of the Shirakawa House opposed to the Yoshida House from the latter half of the 18th century, and compared two Houses. As a result, it became clear that the Shirakawa House worked on the common people widely. In addition, He examined relations with the Shirakawa House and Suika-Shinto or National Learning. And he highlighted that Shinto was related to domain duties closely through an example of Miyazu Domain.

"HAZAMA collection" was donated to Osaka Museum of History in 1997. This research executed the investigation and the arrangement of the material, and made the material table. "HAZAMA collection" is a collection where it goes up to the total about 5000 points or more, and a lot of science equipment material including the refraction type astronomical telescope is included as for the document material from the beginning. In this research, it digitalized at the same time as making it to the table, and the material inspection by the data base was enabled about the main important data. It inspected it in Osaka Museum of History trying it from in 2005.
(1) (2) (3) It wanted to do and it was possible to achieve it almost with the purpose of this research.
(1)Grasp that each material preserves.
(2)Comparison and collation with material related to the inside and outside the country.
(3)Making and making of the overall table and pictorial record. collection of material information data base.
However, there is a lot of thing material such as telescopes, too and (4) is assumed to be a problem in the future.
(4)Restoration of science equipment material and establishment of preservation technology.
