The purpose of this study was to improve the effectiveness of clothing-making learning. The study was conducted from three perspectives: (1) to understand the actual state of skillfulness in fingers/hands and its change over time, (2) to understand hand-sewing skills based on observation of junior high school students’sashiko works and the learning effects of questionnaire surveys, and (3) to develop and utilize digital teaching materials.
Skillfulness in fingers/hands showed a decreasing trend from elementary school students to university students. It is considered necessary to instruction according to the students. The junior high school students experienced growth in both technical and mental skills after learning, and their performance on the thread-tying test improved, which was associated with a higher hand sewing skill. The use of digital materials helped the students to understand the technical aspects and enabled them to work on them outside of class time.
