Network Building Strategy and Adaptation to New Models of Commerce: An Analysis of Japan's Trucking Industry
Ryosuke Sugie; Kihyun Park; Mark Haney; Young Won Park
Perspectives on Global Development and Technology,
This paper presents a comparative analysis of four key players in the Japanese trucking industry, Nippon Express, Fukuyama Transporting, Yamato Transport, and Sagawa Express, in order to address the question of how the sources of competitive advantage in the logistics area are changing in the face of a new global commerce model enabled by technology and characterized by an increasing number of direct-to-consumer transactions. The analysis concludes that, while efficiency remains an important success factor, network building capability and innovative partnerships are the dominant factors leading to sales, market share, and profitability in the contemporary Japanese trucking industry. Firms with the ability to build wide-reaching networks, to augment those networks through innovative partnerships, and thus fill structural holes for parties wishing to engage in business transactions have the greatest chance of success in the industry.

In this article, we aim to examine dynamic network innovation in emerging markets. We present a research model of demand and supply chain integration system (DSCIS) which responds to customer's needs through the integrated information flows. DSCIS synchronizes the key processes in terms of frontend development, product planning, product design, procurement, manufacturing, sales and marketing, maintenance activities based on customer needs as process routines. We further explore the following research questions: (1) what SCM practices do firms consider for emerging market? (2) In the context of emerging market, how are these SCM practices implemented? This paper discusses innovative practices of electronic firms and auto-manufacturers that operate in China. What is noted in this study is that those firms that implement the deeper level of localization-initiated innovation bring amazing business successes. It is imperative for any global firms to (1) understand the rapidly changing market reality (2) develop partnership with the local governments for achieving effective market penetration. The scope of outsourcing is extended to the local firms that are strategically aligned to assume specific aspects of global supply chain management challenges. In brief, integration of both supply and demand chain is crucial for emerging market markets.

Chinese manufacturing companies are facing challenges under severe global competition and wage rising in domestic market. They have to transform their organizations from low cost operation to higher quality and the more advanced technologies. Through the interview at Geely Automobile in Hang Zhou, China, we could identify a series of efforts for their transformation. The company executed strategic change in 2007 and quality management improvement in 2010. It has formulated a new corporate vision and strategy to provide the higher value to the customer, without participating into the cost competition in the market. In order to realize the strategy, the company has begun technical improvement instead of mimicking other companies products. It started to focus on in-house R&D, learning from world-top class company. M&A with Volvo is considered to be a typical learning example. As for quality management, the company aggressively brought competitors management essence into it, such as Toyota Production System. To facilitate such transformation, Mr. Li, the founder of Geely, played an essential leadership with foresight and logicality after all. Geelys transformation is not yet popular for all Chinese manufacturing companies, but some companies have already begun such a commitment to strategic change or quality improvement. However, our research is exploratory and we are not sure how much the spirit of quality management and improvement is penetrated in the actual workers.

Japanese firms are known for their superior technology and excellent quality performance. However, in spite of outstanding technological competency and quality performance, global competitiveness of Japanese electronic firms has been deteriorating in 2000s. In contrast, Korean counterparts have displayed significant global competitive gains. This article presents research model that defines interrelationships among product integrity, product architecture and IT strategy. This model is examined through case study of Japanese and Korean firms. The research results suggest that Japanese selected firms have solid base of monozukuri system from product concept planning to delivery to customers. However, different from Korean firms, these selected Japanese firms do not appear to utilise full IT potential for integrated manufacturing information system (IMIS). Differences between Japanese and Korean firms are discussed along with implications and lessons of this case study. Keywords: product architecture

The aim of this article is to present a research model that defines how different outsourcing strategies influence organizational control mechanisms that impact outsourcing outcomes. This research study consists of five case studies, each focusing on a foreign multi-national corporation (MNC) that has outsourcing experience in China. The results of these case studies examine the relationships among outsourcing strategies, organizational control, and outsourcing performance outcomes. In addition, the findings explain how trust competence and in-house knowledge of outsourced tasks have moderating effects between outsourcing strategies and process control. This article provides practical insight into the ways that business executives exercise organizational control in order to achieve effective outsourcing outcomes within China's evolving economic context.
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine a development model of the Korean IT industry based on the concept of open and cluster innovation and reveal the synergistic effects between the textile and electronic industries. Design/methodology/approach: The analytical data on the Gumi Cluster are panel data mostly from the 1970s-2000s. The specific case studies are based on the field research and in-depth executive interviews for four firms. Findings: Through analysis of the innovation structure of the Gumi Cluster, the paper found that the Korean electronics industry has successfully caught up with first movers like the Japanese and US electronics industries. In this catch-up process, industrial clusters of the Korean electronic industry took on an open cluster and sought open and cluster innovation through collaborating with foreign firms and the other industries like the textile industry for making a rapid catch-up. Research limitations/implications: The contribution of this study is to highlight the essential characteristics of cluster innovation and the practical growth patterns in the context of Korea which has achieved rapid technological catch-up. Future studies may involve the innovation patterns of other industries. Originality/value: Prior cluster research does not necessarily integrate the two streams of research: development of national industries
open innovation processes within the clusters. This paper represents a unique approach to integrate two streams through analyzing the electronic industry. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Purpose: The purpose of this exploratory paper is to analyze how complexity of an artifact affects designing processes of its mechanical, electric, and software sub-systems. Design/methodology/approach: Based on existing empirical research and frameworks of axiomatic design, product architecture, and product development process, the paper proposes a simple model of functional and structural design to examine how engineers' ways of thinking differ among mechanical, electric and software engineers. Findings: This paper argues that products and artifacts tend to become complex (often with integral architecture) when customers' functional requirements become more demanding and societal/technological constraints become stricter, and that complex mechanical products are often accompanied by electronic control units with complex functions. This implies that designing complex mechanical products often requires intensive coordination among mechanical, electric and software engineers. This, however, is not easy, as engineers' way of thinking is often different among the three areas: mechanical engineers want to complete structural design information first to build prototypes
electrical and software engineers (the latter in particular) request complete functional information first. Research limitations/implications: In order to solve the above-mentioned mechanical-electrical-software coordination problem, engineers need to share basic design concept of the product in question. Heavy-weight product managers who infuse the product concept to the project members might be the key to this coordination. Companies may need to make sure that their product development processes are friendly to all of the three groups of engineers. Originality/value: Although designing complex artifacts has been a popular research theme since H. Simon's seminal work, issues of organizational coordination for developing complex products, with increasing managerial importance, need further research. With an empirical case of the automobile and electronic products, the present paper is unique in that it combines frameworks of product development processes, product architectures, and organizational capabilities. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Although strategic procurement has been approached in micro- or macro-purchasing perspective, it has rarely been examined from integration of customer requirements into manufacturing processes through effective in sourcing and outsourcing practises. Effective cost reduction in manufacturing firms involves all the component parts. Thus, strategic procurement requires long-term manufacturing process planning based on responsive customer information systems and supplier integration for strategic procurement. This study focuses strategic procurement practises of Nissan, Toyota and Honda companies through their build to order system. Strategic procurement in particular utilises integration of customer information with all aspects of monozukuri. The key is to achieve short turnover time. Paradoxically, such short turnover time requires long-term production planning. In this paper, we also compare Nissan Production Way (NPW) with BTO of Toyota and Honda Motor Company. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed. Copyright © 2012 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

This paper examines the relationships between mobile communication standards and product development strategy from a product architecture perspective. A product architecture model is useful in analysing research issues related to mobile phone product development. Samsung Electronics (SE)'s unique organisational capabilities are essential components of its product architecture strategy.
This case study suggests several practical implications. First, implementing an effective product strategy requires that organisations are capable of managing different standards and platforms. Organisational networking capabilities enable rapid development and deployment of increasing product volume and variety in a changing global economy. Secondly, efforts to increase market positions within IT industries (the mobile industry in particular) have resulted in the adoption of global standards as an essential priority and as a competitive product positioning strategy. This requires timely implementation of strategic change initiatives (e.g., changes in technology standards). Third, managing product architecture is a strategic process that seeks a necessary balance between:
1 modularity demands for greater market access through rapid network production systems
2 integrality requirements for greater competitiveness through keeping technological core capabilities in-house.
The analysis conducted in this article may be extended to software specialisation processes for advanced as well as emerging markets.

A critical component of Toyota's supply chain is to connect dynamic and uncertain demand requirements with the stable and efficient supply responses. For sustainable competitive position, firms need to build up a broad range of organisational capabilities. The reality is that from component suppliers via production to marketing of the final products it is critical to effectively process multiple cycle times. In view of diverse sets of production requirements paradoxically long production cycle is essential to speed up the overall processing time. Confusions in this matter need careful clarification and this is the very reason for this paper. Copyright © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Although Japan first developed and commercialised the LCD panel in the early 1990s, Korea and Taiwan have rapidly caught up and even surpassed Japan in the management of LCD panel supply chain by the early 2000s. In this paper, we compare the construction flat-glass and the LCD flat-glass in terms of competitive advantages. We examine to what extent the adoption of process architecture impacts the extent of sustainable global competitive advantage even in the same industry. A product with integral process architecture tends to be more difficult to imitate. And organisational capabilities that utilise a right kind of process architecture may secure the source of sustainable competitive advantages. The findings of this study suggest how critical it is to develop and manage process technologies from an architectural perspective in different product areas including semiconductor and solar energy. © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Purpose - This study sets out to explore questions such as: "Does mission statement matter? If so, in what ways?" Using data on mission statements of 128 large Japanese firms, the paper aims to show that corporate mission has a significant impact on corporate policies that determine employment, board, and financial structures.
Design/methodology/approach - The paper provides evidence that strong-mission firms are more likely to retain incumbent employees, promote managers from within firms, and have less debt and a higher percentage of interlocking shareholdings than weak-mission firms.
Findings - The evidence supports the view that strong-mission firms value their organizational capital and thus tend to adopt policies to preserve it. It also confirms that corporate mission and its embedded policies contribute to better corporate performance. The paper suggests that the effect of explicit corporate mission and its implementation has practical impacts in corporate policies and business outcomes.
Research limitations/implications - The sample is based on firms from Japan. The criteria used to discriminate between strong mission and weak mission firms need further refinement with more rigorous sub-dimensions. In the Japanese context the percentage of inside directors is an important indication of internally promoted managers one might argue that a measure of external pressures (e.g. law, codes, investors, etc.) might be a better one. The small number of cases and the richness of statements need a richer qualitative analysis in the future.
Practical implications - The empirical results provide helpful insight on the organizational behavior of Japanese firms during the long economic downturn from the 1990s to 2000s in Japan and an insight on what to do in view of the challenges facing Japanese firms.
Originality/value - The paper presents a model that clarifies the role of mission statement. The extensive literature review includes a diverse set of papers on the role of mission statement. The empirical results suggest how strong Japanese corporate mission, expressed in mission statements, might have impact on corporate outcomes through the formation and utilization of Monozukuri.

Many studies on Japanese manufacturing practices have rarely compared how different Japanese vehicle manufacturers implement market flexible customizing system (MFCS). The aim of this study is to compare collaborative practices of Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi in terms of how they integrate changing market demand information into their production plans. From 2001 to 2008 a research team has engaged in-depth interviews of eleven executives from Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi and five executives from their. suppliers. Such longitudinal approach was to examine the evolving sets of management philosophies and manufacturing practices. The results of this study suggest a few interesting findings. First, as an improvement of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) in 1980s, Japanese vehicle manufacturers have been adopting MFCS which integrates long-term market-driven production planning with short-term customer-specified order demands. Second, Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi combine make-to-plan (MTP) with make-to-order (MTO) and implement incentive practices for their suppliers and manage inventory risks. Third, Toyota implements a few days shorter market responsive production practices than Nissan and Mitsubishi. This difference in "a few days" characterizes Toyota's organizational capabilities in the form of highly flexible customizing system. This study suggests that three Japanese vehicle manufacturers (Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi) continue to implement MFCS as a way of securing their competitive advantages around the world. This paper examines how firms that adopt a modular architecture sustain their competitive advantages in the global market. Several Korean electronics firms have outperformed Japanese counterparts in this global environment. In view of the fragile nature of competition in electronics industry with easily imitable modular product architecture, Korean global firms have adopted a different competitive strategy. First of all, they have moved out of their narrow domestic market. Instead, they have focused on global market which is vastly large and therefore the effective management needs the local empowerment which is the essence of a localization strategy. We focus on LG Electronics (i.e., a successful Korean global electronics firm) from a business strategy standpoint. We then explore how it has attained the global competitiveness with the electronics products that apply modular architecture. Many firms in today's business environment utilize diverse information systems to sustain their competitive advantages. However, too often the return of investment on information technologies is not as obvious as expected. This is particularly true with many small and medium enterprises. This paper presents a research model and examines how mobile display manufacturers implement their information systems for the enhancement of supply chain performance. For the purpose of this research we involve two firms and consider critical success factors of their information integration practices. One successful firm links its existing database to new information systems and aligns its information system for the larger requirements of supply chains. Another firm possesses different organizational capabilities and accordingly shows the poor outcomes. Based on extensive interviews with the IT executives, supply chain professionals and IT vendors within the supply chain network of these two firms, we present our findings. Lessons and implications are discussed. © 2009 PICMET.

We examine how LG Electronics has pursued a localization strategy, particularly its implementation of strategic management processes in two different countries LG India and LG Poland.

Since semiconductor elements are important in determining the total value of mobile phones in the global supply chain, the relationship pattern between semiconductor suppliers and mobile phone manufacturers is worthy of careful examination. As of now, little research attention has been paid to this dynamic reality. This paper introduces a brief industry background of semiconductors and mobile phones. A research model defines the role of product architecture in the nature of supply chain integration. Over the years, Nokia (as mobile phone manufacturer) and Texas Instruments (as component supplier) have maintained collaborative strategic alliances for their mutual competitive advantages. In contrast to the experiences of the personal computer industry, this case study of Nokia and Texas Instruments provides an insight into how mobile phone industry has been evolving in the context of global market.
